Chapter 17 - the mysterious new girl

The classroom felt unusually quiet that morning.

Arjun sat at his desk, his eyes fixed on the empty chair beside the window—the same chair where Elena always sat. The sunlight fell softly across it, but today, it felt… different. Colder.

"She didn't come again?" Riya whispered, leaning toward him.

Arjun shook his head.

"No… this is the third day."

Something wasn't right.

Elena was strange, yes. Quiet, mysterious, and sometimes distant. But she had never missed school before. Not without saying anything.

Arjun clenched his fist slightly.

Where are you, Elena?

After school, Arjun didn't go home.

Instead, he stood near the school gate, thinking.

He remembered the last thing Elena had said to him—

"Some secrets are not meant to be discovered."

At that time, he didn't understand.

But now… it felt like a warning.

"I have to find out," Arjun muttered.

The sky slowly darkened as Arjun walked toward the old road near the forest—the place Elena had once told him to never visit alone.

But today, he didn't care.

The wind was stronger here. The trees moved as if whispering to each other. Every step Arjun took made his heart beat faster.

Then he saw it.

A small, broken gate.

Behind it stood an old house—hidden, silent, almost invisible among the trees.

"This must be it…" he said under his breath.

The door was slightly open.

Arjun hesitated for a moment.

Then slowly… he pushed it.

Creeeak…

The sound echoed through the empty house.

"Hello?" he called out.

No answer.

Inside, everything was covered in dust. Old furniture, broken frames, and a strange coldness filled the air.

Then suddenly—

"Arjun."

He froze.

That voice…

"Elena?"

She stepped out from the shadows.

Her eyes looked different.

Darker. Sadder.

"Why did you come here?" she asked softly.

Arjun took a step forward.

"You disappeared. I was worried."

Elena looked away.

"I told you not to come."

"I don't care!" Arjun said, his voice shaking. "You're hiding something. And I want to know the truth."

Silence filled the room.

For a moment, Elena didn't move.

Then slowly… she turned back toward him.

"You won't like the truth," she said.

"Tell me anyway."

Elena closed her eyes.

And when she opened them again… something had changed.

The air felt heavier.

"I'm not who you think I am, Arjun," she said quietly.

Arjun's heart started pounding.

"What do you mean?"

Elena took a deep breath.

"This place… this house… it's not just abandoned."

She looked around, her expression filled with pain.

"It's where everything ended for me."

Arjun frowned.

"I don't understand—"

"I died here."

The words hit him like a shock.

"What…?"

Elena's eyes shimmered with something between sadness and emptiness.

"Years ago. Before you ever knew me. Before this school. Before everything."

Arjun stepped back slightly.

"No… that's not possible."

"I didn't choose to come back," she continued. "I was trapped. Between past and present."

The room suddenly felt colder.

Arjun's mind raced.

This couldn't be real.

And yet… everything about Elena suddenly made sense.

Her silence.

Her strange behavior.

Her eyes.

"You're… a ghost?" he whispered.

Elena didn't answer.

But her silence said everything.

"I never wanted you to find out," she said softly.

Arjun looked at her, his fear slowly mixing with something else.

Sadness.

"You're still… you," he said quietly.

Elena shook her head.

"No. I'm just a memory that refuses to disappear."

Arjun stepped closer.

"Then why are you here?"

Elena looked at him.

And for the first time—

A tear rolled down her cheek.

"Because I'm waiting."

"For what?"

"For the truth to be known."

Arjun's chest tightened.

"What truth?"

Elena's voice dropped to a whisper.

"My death… wasn't an accident."

A sudden chill ran down Arjun's spine.

"Someone… killed me."

Outside, thunder echoed in the distance.

Inside the house, everything felt darker.

More dangerous.

Arjun realized something important.

This wasn't just a mystery anymore.

It was something much bigger.

Something hidden.

Something… deadly.
