Chapter 29 - Quiet Between Us

The first exam day arrived with heavy air.

Students stood outside classrooms revising last-minute formulas. Some whispered answers nervously.

Ariana stood calmly, flipping through her notes one final time.

"You're not scared?" Lily asked.

"No."

"You're terrifying."

Ariana almost smiled.

Inside the exam hall, everything became silent.

Pens scratching paper. Clock ticking loudly.

For three hours, nothing else existed.

No phone.

No messages.

No distractions.

Just questions and answers.

When the bell rang, she exhaled slowly.

One down.

Many to go.

At home, she placed her bag down and immediately opened the next subject's book.

No rest.

No scrolling.

No checking notifications.

Only after dinner did she glance at her phone.

One message.

UnknownUser: How was it?

She typed after a few seconds.

SilentStar15: Okay.

Pause.

Then—

UnknownUser: That means good.

She didn't argue.

Instead—

SilentStar15: Still more papers left.

There was a small delay.

Then—

UnknownUser: One at a time.

She read that twice.

One at a time.

It sounded simple.

But grounding.

She typed—

SilentStar15: You don't talk much these days.

Long pause.

Then—

UnknownUser: You're busy.

She stared at that answer.

No complaint.

No blame.

Just understanding.

She didn't know whether that made things easier or harder.

Because part of her expected him to try harder.

Another part was relieved he didn't.

She typed—

SilentStar15: I won't be online much till exams end.

Pause.

Then—

UnknownUser: I know.

That "I know" felt heavier than usual.

Like he understood more than she said.

Before sleeping, she opened her bag to take out the next subject's book.

The folded note slipped out slightly.

She froze.

For a second, she considered throwing it away.

But she didn't.

Instead, she tucked it back carefully.

Not accepting it.

Not rejecting it.

Just… keeping it.

Exams would end soon.

Results would come.

Class 11 would end.

Life would move forward.

And somewhere in that quiet space—

There was still someone waiting between short messages and long pauses.

But for now—

Focus came first.

Everything else could wait.
