Chapter 20 - 20

Javier didn't keep them in suspense.

He directly threw Marcus's diary to Rebecca. Marcus's sins were not a secret; on the contrary, more people needed to know about this matter to expose the Umbrella Corporation's evil deeds.

"The story of a madman,"

"Rebecca and Billy, you two can take your time reading it. Remember to keep it after you finish; this can serve as very strong evidence." After throwing the diary to Rebecca, Javier patted his backside and stood up. He had stayed in this room for too long; it was time to prepare to leave.

Meanwhile,

After an unknown amount of time,

Rebecca and Billy Coen's expressions suddenly darkened after reading the diary. Without a doubt, what was recorded there were the heinous and unforgivable crimes of Doctor Marcus, which left both Rebecca and Billy Coen feeling indignant.

"Alright, alright, don't be angry."

"It seems your faces are even darker than mine after reading the diary. This isn't the time for us to dwell on Marcus's crimes. The most important thing is how to escape from here. We've already obtained the last statue wing, so let's quickly return to the Institute Hall!"

Looking at Rebecca and Billy's gloomy faces, Javier felt a bit helpless and could only try to lighten the mood by saying this.

"How could I not be angry?!"

"I never thought Doctor Marcus would be such a hypocritical beast. Human experimentation… that's a taboo, and he even injected viruses into people's bodies to create such terrifying zombies. Are humans themselves… truly that detestable?"

Facing Javier's persuasion,

Rebecca, also a pharmaceutical expert, found it difficult to accept. She never imagined there could be such evil people in the world. What made Rebecca even more incomprehensible was that this person was Marcus, a genius biologist.

So-called geniuses…

Do they always want to research these inhumane projects? Is it only viruses, monsters, and things that transcend human ethics and morals that can excite their interest and exhilaration?

Thinking of this,

Rebecca felt a bit helpless. As an expert in pharmacology, she was also a researcher, and she felt deeply ashamed for this.

But soon,

Under the comfort of the two men, Javier and Billy Coen, Rebecca returned to her original state. She swore… she would definitely expose the Umbrella Corporation's ugly true face!

"Thump-thump-thump…"

"Thump-thump-thump…"

After adjusting their emotions,

The trio of Javier quickly left Marcus's office and continued walking outwards. The three arrived in front of a simple medicine storage room, with sickbeds and various scattered medicines on the ground. However, this was not a place for virus research. In the incubators next to it, there were still a few herbs cultivated that had not withered and died.

Javier recognized at a glance that these were the red, green, and yellow herbs from the game, and even the first aid sprays placed on the counter were so familiar.

It's just a pity—

These herbs and first aid sprays weren't as strong as they were in the game, where one use could fully restore health. They merely had effects like stopping bleeding, promoting blood production, and preventing poisoning.

In the medicine storage room, Rebecca found a ready-made medicine blender, which was an instrument for preparing potions. As a pharmaceutical expert, Rebecca immediately noticed this item and carried it with her.

With this, Rebecca could prepare potions anytime, anywhere. After all, the potions in her backpack were running low, and now was a good time to replenish them. The medicine storage room also had enough herbs and medicinal materials, making it the perfect source of medical supplies—

Institute Hall—

After circling around,

The trio of Javier successfully returned to the central hall of the Institute. Because the zombies had been cleared out once before, the path was mostly unobstructed. All that remained was to see what secrets the Goddess of Balance statue in front of them held.

"Click!"

After attaching the last wing of the Evil Statue, a lifelike statue of a black demon with bat wings appeared before the three of them. Without hesitation, Javier directly placed the black Evil Statue and the previous white Good Statue together on the golden scales of the Goddess of Balance statue.

"Clang—!"

As the two statues were placed simultaneously,

the previously tilted scales achieved balance.

And on the inscription at the base of the white Goddess of Balance statue, a line of text was carved: "When good and evil achieve balance, a new path will be born—"

Without a doubt,

this was the hint for the puzzle, and now they had placed the good and evil statues…

"Buzz…!"

"Crack—!!!"

A tremendous tremor suddenly rang out,

as if some mechanism had been triggered.

The portrait of Marcus in the center of the Institute Hall suddenly began to slowly vibrate, and countless dust particles filled the air. The massive portrait transformed into a large door, slowly descending and revealing a dark underground staircase. It seemed that inside… was the true entrance to Marcus's virus Institute.

The outside—

was merely a facade to deceive.

"The mechanism has indeed opened,"

"Let's go in!"

Javier, Rebecca, and Billy Coen exchanged glances, nodding in unison. Without any hesitation, they slowly walked towards the depths of the underground staircase, weapons in hand.

The walls of the basement were covered in dust; a slight touch would leave one covered in grime. Corners were filled with various cobwebs. The dim lighting combined with the unique setting was truly unnerving, as if they had entered some terrifying place. It felt less like a basement and more like the entrance to hell.

And the trio of Javier, fearing being ambushed from both front and back,

advanced cautiously. Javier led the way, Billy Coen covered the rear, and Rebecca was protected in the middle. After all, the basement tunnel space was not large, it was very narrow, and if zombies blocked their retreat, they would truly be finished.

However,

as he observed the increasingly large cobwebs on the surrounding walls,

and the strange smell permeating the air, Javier was filled with a very ominous premonition, as if some terrifying monster was waiting for them ahead.

"Wait…"

"Be careful, I feel something isn't right. Rebecca, you use the shotgun!"

Perhaps due to intuition,

Javier was the first to stop, then handed the M1897 shotgun in his hand to Rebecca. Javier himself took out a Molotov cocktail from his tactical backpack and placed his right hand on the Desert Eagle on his thigh.

In this kind of terrain,

if they encountered an encirclement,

blocking the path with a Molotov cocktail was a very good method. Although it was possible to burn themselves, if the zombies rushed over and the flames blocked the way, and the three of them desperately retreated, they could still save their lives. However, if they were attacked by zombies from both front and back, then they would truly be overwhelmed, and their firepower would not be able to suppress them. Therefore, no matter how dangerous the Molotov cocktail was, Javier would still use it.

"Hiss, hiss…!!!"

At this moment,

a strange sound suddenly echoed from the tunnel corner ahead.

It was similar to the previous hissing of the Plague Crawler, but much louder. This made Javier wonder if it might be an even larger mutated insect, just like the giant mutated centipede from before.

Next second!

"Tap tap tap tap tap—!!!!"

A more urgent sound approached,

and two dark figures suddenly darted out, immediately climbing and clinging to the wall. At this moment, with the aid of the dim light, the trio of Javier finally clearly saw the two creatures clinging to the wall. They were so fast, were they Lickers?

No!

Of course not. At this moment, the Umbrella Corporation did not have the ability to develop Lickers. It was a mass of pitch-black gray shell, an oval body, several pairs of giant feet like a crab, covered with dense, furry cilia like the steel needles of a hedgehog. A large abdomen trailed behind, and the small head at the front emitted a crimson glow in the darkness. Its mouth still had the characteristic sharp mouthparts, capable of tearing anything.

These…

were two mutated spiders—!

Each was as large as a big dog, and like the previous Plague Crawler, they were a species improved by the Umbrella Corporation using the T-Virus. Poisonous spiders of this size could, in essence, easily capture large prey such as lions, tigers, and even humans.

Thinking of this,

Javier couldn't help but touch the spider silk clinging to the wall. The white fibrous liquid was surprisingly as hard as steel wire, and its toughness was even more incredible, practically indistinguishable from an elastic rope. It possessed both strength and toughness, which was beyond the realm of scientific common sense—!

Speaking of which…

If I were bitten by this poisonous spider, would I also have a chance to become a real Spider-Man?

Given the requests in the comment section, I will be posting the characters that appear in the Resident Evil 0 series for identification purposes. However, due to the age of the game, the author has no means of finding clear images, most of them are blurry, so please bear with it and just get a general idea—

Rebecca Chambers

Alias: Rebecca Chambers

Gender: Female

Appearances: Resident Evil 0, 1, Resident Evil: Vendetta

Age: 18 (first appearance)

Fictional Character Blood Type: AB, Height: 161 cm, Weight: 42 kg, Nationality: American

Rebecca Chambers is a member of the S.T.A.R.S Bravo Team and an expert in pharmaceutical refinement and compounding. She serves as a medic within the team. Although Rebecca had just graduated from university, her excellent academic performance in chemistry earned her recognition from the Raccoon City Police Department, leading to her selection into the elite S.T.A.R.S.

Due to her lack of practical experience and her nature as a proactive girl, Rebecca often makes bold and decisive moves. However, when faced with extremely unusual situations, she can be greatly surprised and become indecisive, which reveals her immature side. Her first mission was to accompany the Bravo Team to the Akeley Mountains to investigate a strange murder case…

In Resident Evil: Vendetta, Rebecca is already a university professor and a top researcher, as well as an authority in anti-bioweapon research. She was saved by Leon and Chris during a bioterrorist attack and subsequently joined the fight against terrorist threats—

Javier Li

Gender: Male

Age: 20

Fictional Character Blood Type: O, Height: 179cm, Weight: 80kg, Nationality: Chinese

This is an imagined character for this work: a black-haired, tall, slender, and charming young man. His father was Chinese and his mother was American; both have since died in a car accident. He was raised by his uncle, who was a researcher at the Umbrella Corporation and acted as his guardian. Born in China, he is of Chinese mixed heritage, moved to the United States at age 12, and graduated from the police academy at age 19 with special honors (20-21 is the normal graduation age for American police academy cadets; one can retire after working for the police department for 20+ years). Javier was noticed by the Raccoon City Police Department for his excellent shooting talent and joined the S.T.A.R.S to carry out missions.

His personality is carefree and thoughtless, working a nine-to-five job, clocking in and out, often being late or leaving early, and slacking off is a normal occurrence—

Don't ask why his parents are both dead; it's because this way he has no weaknesses. It doesn't matter if his background is a bit tragic. No image available for now; although the author can draw, he hasn't conceptualized the protagonist's appearance yet.

Billy Coen

Gender: Male

Appearances: Resident Evil 0, Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles

Blood Type: A, Height: 181 cm, Weight: 74.2 kg, Date of Birth: 1972, Occupation: Former Lieutenant

Billy was originally a Lieutenant sentenced to death for the murder of 23 people. The real reason was incorrect mission intelligence; the squad leader, not wanting to return empty-handed, intended to kill innocent people and claim credit. However, due to Billy's strong opposition, the enraged squad leader knocked Billy unconscious and framed him for the murder of 23 innocent civilians.

While being transferred to the base for execution, someone attacked the transport vehicle, and Billy seized the opportunity to escape. He is a person who is cold on the outside but warm on the inside, with a strong sense of justice. If ordered to do something wrong, he would never obey. He also has a special talent: he can play the piano…

It's interesting to note: In Resident Evil 6, one of the male protagonists, former mercenary Jack Muller, once mentioned that his master who taught him firearms and combat was a former special forces soldier and also taught him very good piano playing skills. This has led to some speculation about Billy, but only the game development company likely knows the answer—
