Chapter 24 - Chapter Twenty-Four Come Alone

The message replayed for the fourth time.

Come alone. Or she disappears permanently.

The video froze on Elena's face.

Bound.

Unafraid.

Watching the camera like she knew he was on the other side.

Alessandro stood in his private office, the shattered remains of a crystal decanter glittering across the floor like fallen stars.

No one spoke.

Not Adrian.

Not the men lining the walls.

Because everyone understood the truth.

This wasn't negotiation.

This was provocation.

The Choice

"You can't go alone," Adrian said finally.

Alessandro didn't look at him. "They'll kill her if I don't."

"They'll try to kill you if you do."

A slow inhale. Controlled. Dangerous.

"They won't," Alessandro replied quietly.

Adrian's jaw tightened. "That's arrogance."

"No," Alessandro said. "That's leverage."

Adrian stepped closer. "Explain."

Alessandro turned toward him then, eyes cold and sharp.

"Orlov didn't take her to end her."

He tapped the screen.

"She's bait. Proof of control. A message."

"What message?"

"That he can reach into my world… and take what's mine."

Silence fell heavy.

"He wants me to kneel," Alessandro finished.

"And you won't," Adrian said flatly.

A slow smile curved Alessandro's lips.

"I don't kneel."

Elena

The white room was too clean.

Too quiet.

Elena flexed her fingers as sensation returned fully to her limbs.

They hadn't restrained her tightly.

Interesting.

They wanted her conscious. Alert.

A psychological play.

The door opened again.

Orlov entered without hurry.

He moved like a man who believed he owned the world.

"You're adjusting quickly," he observed.

Elena didn't look at him. "You injected a muscle inhibitor. Temporary. Sloppy dosage."

A faint chuckle. "Impressive."

She finally met his gaze.

Cold gray eyes.

Assessing.

"You're not here to hurt me," she said calmly.

"No?"

"You need me intact."

Orlov circled her chair slowly.

"Your husband believes in dominance," he said. "In power through fear."

"And you don't?"

"I believe in control through precision."

He stopped in front of her.

"Alessandro is strong. Brutal. Feared."

His voice softened slightly.

"But you… you're strategic."

Elena's pulse remained steady.

"You've studied me."

"Extensively."

He leaned closer.

"I don't want territory."

"Then what do you want?"

His lips curved faintly.

"You."

The word hung heavy between them.

Not desire.

Not romance.

Value.

The Offer

"He will come alone," Orlov continued. "Because he cannot risk you."

Elena tilted her head slightly. "And?"

"And when he does, I will offer him a trade."

"What trade?"

Orlov's gaze sharpened.

"You remain with me. He walks away alive."

The silence that followed was ice-cold.

"You're insane," Elena said softly.

"Am I?"

He straightened.

"You are the reason he's evolved from brute to strategist. Remove you… and he reverts."

Elena's lips curved slightly.

"You underestimate him."

"Do I?"

Orlov stepped back toward the door.

"You'll see soon enough."

The Preparation

Back at the estate, Alessandro loaded his firearm with methodical precision.

Not rushed.

Not emotional.

Calculated.

Adrian watched from across the room.

"You have a tracker implanted in your watch," Adrian said quietly.

Alessandro didn't react.

"They'll scan you."

"They won't find it."

Adrian hesitated. "You're walking into a controlled environment."

"Yes."

"And?"

Alessandro finally looked at him.

"And they forget something."

"What?"

"They think she's helpless."

A brief flicker of something dangerous crossed his eyes.

"They've never seen her cornered."

The Meeting

The address led to an unfinished high-rise overlooking the harbor.

Minimal security visible.

Too minimal.

Alessandro exited his car alone.

Hands visible.

No visible weapons.

Inside, the structure echoed with hollow stillness.

Concrete. Steel beams. Open floors.

A single chair placed at the center of the top level.

Elena sat in it.

Unbound now.

Composed.

Orlov stood beside her, two guards several feet back.

"Right on time," Orlov greeted smoothly.

Alessandro's gaze locked onto Elena first.

Scanning for injuries.

Bruises. Fear.

She gave him the smallest shake of her head.

I'm fine.

The tension in his shoulders eased a fraction.

"What do you want?" Alessandro asked coldly.

Orlov smiled faintly.

"Direct. I appreciate that."

He gestured toward Elena.

"She is extraordinary."

Alessandro's jaw tightened. "Say what you want."

"Leave the city. Relinquish control of the ports."

"And?"

"Leave her here."

The wind howled through the open structure.

Elena didn't move.

Didn't speak.

Alessandro's expression didn't change.

But the temperature in the room seemed to drop ten degrees.

"You believe I'd trade her?"

Orlov met his gaze calmly.

"I believe you'll choose survival."

A beat of silence.

Then—

Elena stood.

Before anyone reacted, she drove her heel down hard onto Orlov's foot and twisted, grabbing the concealed blade from inside her gown.

She moved fast.

Faster than expected.

The blade pressed to Orlov's throat in one fluid motion.

"Call them off," she said softly.

The guards froze.

Alessandro didn't move.

Didn't blink.

He knew better.

Orlov didn't panic.

He laughed.

Low. Almost impressed.

"I was hoping you'd do that."

A click echoed behind Elena.

Cold metal pressed against the back of her skull.

A hidden third guard.

She hadn't accounted for him.

Her grip tightened instinctively.

Orlov's voice dropped to a whisper.

"You're brilliant."

The wind roared louder.

Alessandro's eyes darkened beyond reason.

The guard behind Elena shifted slightly.

One twitch.

One wrong move.

And everything would explode.

Orlov smiled faintly.

"Now," he murmured. "Let's see how ruthless the Don truly is."
