Chapter 14 - Chapter 14

Aria didn't speak for a long time.

The Sanctum of Mirrors had drained her in a way she didn't know was possible. Not physically. Not magically. Something deeper. Something that felt like it had been carved out of her and left raw.

She sat on the cold stone floor, her breath uneven, her palms pressed flat against the runes that still glowed faintly beneath her. The fragment's presence pulsed beneath her ribs—slow, sharp, deliberate.

You cannot hold me forever.

Aria clenched her jaw. "Watch me."

The Demon King stood a few steps away, silent, watching her with that same unyielding stillness that made him feel carved from shadow. His cloak whispered softly around him, the shadows bending subtly toward him like loyal creatures.

"You anchored yourself," he said.

Aria let out a shaky breath. "Barely."

"You succeeded."

"That's not what it felt like."

"It is what happened."

Aria pushed herself upright, her legs trembling. "She's learning me."

"Yes."

"She's copying me."

"Yes."

"She's becoming me."

"No."

Aria looked up sharply. "How do you know?"

"Because you are still here."

Aria stared at him. "That's not comforting."

"It is not meant to be."

"Of course not."

He stepped closer, his presence cold and steady. "Your will is stronger than hers."

Aria shook her head. "No. She's ancient. She's powerful. She's—"

"A fragment."

Aria pressed a hand to her chest. "She doesn't feel like a fragment."

"She is incomplete."

"She doesn't feel incomplete."

"She is."

Aria groaned. "You're impossible."

"So I have been told."

She pushed herself to her feet. "What now?"

"Now," he said, "you learn to separate your emotions from hers."

Aria blinked. "My emotions?"

"Yes."

"She's influencing them?"

"Yes."

Aria's stomach twisted. "How much?"

"Enough."

"Enough to what?"

"To blur the line between you."

Aria pressed a hand to her forehead. "I can't do this."

"You can."

"You keep saying that."

"Because it remains true."

Aria looked away. "I'm scared."

"You should be."

Aria glared at him. "You're terrible at comfort."

"I am not offering comfort."

"Clearly."

He gestured for her to follow.

They left the Sanctum, the door closing behind them with a soft thud. The corridor outside was dim, lit only by faint silver runes that pulsed in time with her heartbeat.

Or the fragment's.

She wasn't sure anymore.

They walked in silence, ascending through the Citadel. The air grew warmer, the shadows lighter, the runes brighter. The walls here were smoother, carved with symbols that glowed softly like starlight.

Aria frowned. "Where are we going?"

"To the Hall of Echoes."

Aria stiffened. "Again?"

"Yes."

"I barely survived last time."

"You will survive again."

Aria groaned. "You're impossible."

"So I have been told."

When they reached the Hall, Aria stopped.

The doors opened silently, revealing the vast chamber filled with swirling shadows and floating shards of light. The floor was marked with intricate patterns, forming a massive circle that pulsed faintly with silver energy.

Aria stepped inside, her breath catching. "Why here?"

"Because this is where she is loudest."

Aria swallowed hard. "And you want me to… what? Talk to her?"

"No."

"Then what?"

"Silence her."

Aria stared at him. "Silence her? How?"

"By refusing to listen."

Aria blinked. "That's your plan?"

"Yes."

"That's not a plan. That's denial."

"It is discipline."

Aria groaned. "You're impossible."

"So I have been told."

He gestured to the center of the chamber. "Stand there."

Aria hesitated. "What does this one do?"

"It amplifies her voice."

Aria's stomach twisted. "Why would you do that?"

"So you can learn to ignore it."

Aria stared at him. "You're insane."

"No."

"You're reckless."

"No."

"You're—"

"Correct."

Aria threw her hands up. "Fine. Whatever. Let's get this over with."

She stepped into the center of the circle.

The runes beneath her feet brightened instantly, responding to her presence. A soft hum filled the air, rising in pitch until it vibrated through her bones.

Aria gasped, gripping her arms.

The fragment inside her stirred.

The Demon King raised a hand.

The shadows around the chamber shifted, swirling toward the circle. They moved like smoke, like water, like something alive. They wrapped around her, not touching her skin but forming a barrier, a cocoon of darkness.

Aria's breath quickened. "What are you doing?"

"Amplifying her."

"That sounds bad."

"It is necessary."

The shadows tightened.

The hum deepened.

The fragment pulsed.

Aria cried out, her knees buckling. The warmth inside her flared, spreading through her chest, her arms, her legs. She felt weightless, suspended between worlds.

The fragment's voice roared through her mind.

Mother…

Aria flinched. "Stop."

You cannot silence me.

"Stop."

You are mine.

"No."

You are awakening me.

"No!"

You cannot resist.

"Yes. I can."

The shadows trembled.

The runes flared.

The fragment surged.

Aria screamed.

The Demon King's voice cut through the chaos.

"Aria. Focus."

"I can't—"

"You must."

The fragment roared.

You belong to me.

Aria clenched her fists. "No."

You are mine.

"No."

You cannot silence me.

Aria pressed her hands to her ears. "I'm not listening."

You cannot ignore me.

"I'm not listening."

You cannot—

"I'm not listening!"

The shadows shook.

The runes flared.

The fragment screamed.

And then—

Silence.

Aria collapsed forward, gasping.

The fragment pulsed faintly.

Weakly.

Contained.

The Demon King stepped closer. "You did it."

Aria trembled. "I didn't do anything."

"You silenced her."

Aria pressed a hand to her chest. "She's furious."

"Yes."

"She wants out."

"Yes."

Aria looked up at him, her voice barely a whisper.

"What happens now?"

He held her gaze.

"Now," he said quietly, "you learn to make her obey."
