Chapter 27 - CHAPTER 27

Aria didn't remember leaving the Chamber of Shaping.

One moment she was collapsing into the Demon King's arms, silver fire fading from her skin. The next, she was walking through the Citadel's upper corridors, her breath uneven, her mind still echoing with the fragment's shriek when she touched the child's flame.

Her hand stayed pressed to her stomach.

The warmth there was steady.

Alive.

Present.

Not just a flutter now.

A pulse.

A rhythm that wasn't hers.

The fragment pulsed faintly beneath her ribs.

You cannot become what you do not understand.

Aria exhaled slowly. "I don't need to understand you."

You need me.

"No."

You are nothing without me.

"I'm not nothing."

You are weak.

"I'm still here."

Silence.

But not absence.

Never absence.

The Demon King walked beside her, silent as ever, his cloak whispering across the stone floor. The shadows bent subtly toward him, drawn to him like loyal creatures. His presence was cold, steady, grounding.

Aria hated how much she needed that right now.

When they reached the balcony overlooking the Shadow Realm, he finally spoke.

"You saw the child."

Aria leaned against the railing, her breath trembling. "I didn't just see them. I felt them."

He nodded. "Their presence is strong."

Aria pressed a hand to her stomach. "Stronger than I expected."

"Stronger than she expected."

Aria swallowed hard. "She's afraid."

"Yes."

"Of them."

"Yes."

Aria looked up at him. "Why?"

He didn't answer immediately.

When he did, his voice was low.

"Because your child is the first being she cannot influence."

Aria's breath caught. "She can't touch them."

"No."

"She can't speak to them."

"No."

"She can't break them."

"No."

Aria exhaled slowly. "Good."

He nodded. "It is."

They stood in silence for a moment, watching the swirling rivers of silver light that cut through the darkness of the realm below.

Aria's voice was quiet. "What happens now?"

He turned toward her. "Now, you learn what you were meant to become."

Aria frowned. "You keep saying that."

"Because it remains true."

Aria crossed her arms. "Then tell me."

He studied her for a long moment.

"You were created as a counterforce," he said. "A being capable of resisting her. Containing her. Ending her."

Aria shook her head. "I'm not a weapon."

"No."

"I'm not a vessel."

"No."

"I'm not—"

"You are a convergence."

Aria blinked. "A what?"

"A convergence of two opposing forces. Light and shadow. Creation and destruction. Origin and end."

Aria stared at him. "That sounds… impossible."

"It is unprecedented."

Aria pressed a hand to her stomach. "And the baby?"

He looked at her stomach.

"The child is the first being born from that convergence."

Aria's breath trembled. "What does that mean?"

"It means they are the future."

Aria swallowed hard. "Of what?"

"Of everything."

Aria stared at him. "You're not helping."

He stepped closer, his voice low. "Your child is the first being who can exist beyond the fragment's influence. Beyond her reach. Beyond her design."

Aria's stomach twisted. "And she hates that."

"Yes."

"She wants them gone."

"Yes."

"She wants me gone."

"Yes."

Aria pressed a hand to her chest. "I won't let her."

"You will not."

Aria looked away. "She's getting stronger."

"You are getting stronger."

Aria shook her head. "Not fast enough."

"You will."

"You keep saying that."

"Because it remains true."

Aria glared at him. "You're impossible."

"So I have been told."

She pushed herself off the railing. "So what do I do?"

He gestured toward the inner corridors. "Come."

Aria groaned. "Where now?"

"To the Hall of Echoes."

Aria stiffened. "Again?"

"Yes."

"I barely survived last time."

"You will survive again."

Aria groaned. "I hate this."

"So I have been told."

They walked through the Citadel in silence.

When they reached the Hall of Echoes, Aria stopped.

The doors opened silently, revealing the vast chamber filled with swirling shadows and floating shards of light. The floor was marked with intricate patterns, forming a massive circle that pulsed faintly with silver energy.

Aria stepped inside, her breath catching. "Why here?"

"Because this is where you will learn to separate her voice from your own."

Aria's stomach twisted. "She's already bound."

"She is not silent."

Aria pressed a hand to her chest. "She's whispering."

"Yes."

"She's waiting."

"Yes."

"For what?"

"For you to doubt."

Aria swallowed hard. "I already doubt."

"You do not break."

Aria looked away. "I feel like I'm breaking."

"You are becoming."

Aria glared at him. "Stop saying that."

He didn't.

He simply gestured to the center of the chamber.

"Stand there."

Aria hesitated. "What happens if I do?"

"You will hear her."

Aria groaned. "I already hear her."

"You will hear only her."

Aria's breath caught. "Only her?"

"Yes."

"No. Absolutely not."

"You must."

"I can't."

"You must."

Aria pressed a hand to her stomach. "What about the baby?"

"They will not be touched."

Aria narrowed her eyes. "You're sure?"

"Yes."

Aria exhaled slowly. "Okay."

She stepped into the circle.

The runes beneath her feet brightened instantly, responding to her presence. The shadows around the chamber shifted, swirling toward the circle. They moved like smoke, like water, like something alive.

Aria's breath quickened. "What are you doing?"

"Amplifying her voice."

"That sounds bad."

"It is necessary."

The shadows tightened.

The runes flared.

The fragment stirred.

You cannot silence me.

Aria clenched her fists. "I already have."

You cannot separate me.

"I can."

You are mine.

"I am not."

You belong to me.

"I belong to myself."

The shadows trembled.

The runes blazed.

The fragment screamed.

Aria cried out, her knees buckling.

The Demon King's voice cut through the chaos.

"Aria. Focus."

"I can't—"

"You must."

"She's too loud."

"You are louder."

Aria pressed a hand to her stomach. "For them."

The fragment hissed.

The child weakens you.

"No."

The child divides you.

"No."

The child will destroy you.

Aria's voice cracked. "The child gives me strength."

The shadows shook.

The runes flared.

Aria screamed.

And then—

Silence.

Aria collapsed forward, gasping.

The fragment pulsed faintly.

Weakly.

Separate.

The Demon King stepped closer. "You did it."

Aria trembled. "I separated her voice."

"Yes."

"She can't mimic me."

"No."

"She can't influence me."

"No."

Aria pressed a hand to her stomach, tears burning her eyes. "I can hear myself again."

He nodded. "Good."

Aria looked up at him, her voice barely a whisper.

"What happens now?"

He held her gaze.

"Now," he said quietly, "you learn to silence her forever."
