Chapter 23 - IN THE ARMS OF MAYBE.

TRACY

Two days later, my apartment was filled with the sound of excitement and last-minute packing. Sonia was on the floor, neatly folding the final pieces of my summer clothes into a soft beige suitcase. The faint scent of her vanilla perfume floated through the air. I stood by the window, gazing out into the busy city skyline, my heart beating faster at the thought of the trip ahead.

"All done!" Sonia said cheerfully, zipping up the last bag. "You're officially ready for paradise."

I smiled, hugging my friend tightly. "I still can't believe this is happening, Sonia. The Maldives. It feels like a dream."

Before we could exchange more words, the sound of a car horn drifted from outside. Eli had arrived—with his driver waiting patiently beside the sleek black SUV. I grabbed my handbag, adjusted my straw hat, and gave Sonia one last look of gratitude.

"Thank you, babe. For everything."

"Go enjoy yourself, we'll keep in touch" Sonia said, waving. "You deserve this."

"I love you girl!" My voice echoed as I dragged my suitcase to meet Eli outside.

Downstairs, Eli stood leaning against the car, dressed casually but sharp, his smile warm and reassuring. As soon as he saw me, he stepped forward to take my luggage.

"Ready?" he asked softly.

"More than ready," I replied with a soft smile.

We drove straight to Murtala Muhammed International Airport, the hum of Lagos traffic fading behind us. Inside the car, I couldn't stop smiling as Eli reached for my hand.

The flight took off an hour after check-in, and as the plane lifted into the sky, I pressed my forehead to the window, watching the world shrink beneath me.

The moment we landed, the Maldives greeted us with breathtaking beauty. The air was warm, kissed with salt and sunlight. The ocean shimmered in hues of turquoise and sapphire, stretching endlessly into the horizon. Palm trees swayed gently along white, powdery beaches. My heart skipped as I stepped out of the small sea-plane that took us to Ifuru Island Hotel—a private slice of heaven nestled between the Indian Ocean's whispering tides.

The resort was like something out of a dream—luxurious wooden villas on stilts above the water, each with glass floors revealing the coral gardens below. The air smelled of coconuts and sea breeze.

I loved the smell of nature over here, if I had a chance, I wouldn't dare go back home. It felt peaceful.

As we entered our villa, I stood by the balcony, letting the sunlight kiss my face. Eli came behind me, wrapping his arms around my waist.

"I can't believe you did all this for me," I said, turning to face him, my eyes bright.

Eli smiled, brushing a strand of hair from my cheek. "I told you I'd make you happy, Tracy. You deserve the world. And I want to be the man who gives it to you."

My chest tightened with emotion. I smiled through the tears that suddenly welled in my eyes. "You already have," I whispered.

"I just hope you don't break my heart baby girl." He said, whipping the tears that dropped from my eyes.

"I sniffed and said, "No I won't, there's no reason for me to. I love you too baby, and I'm grateful for what we share."

Eli stared deeply into my eyes, and placed a kiss on my soft lips. "Enough of the tears baby, I need more smiles now."

We stood there, wrapped in silence, the sound of waves rolling beneath us.

But deep within, as I unpacked my clothes and watched him arrange our things, my thoughts drifted—uninvited—back to my Romeo. The man who once owned my heart since the day I saw him through my window. His smile, his wave, his laughter —how easily they came back now.

I imagined him standing there instead, whispering those same words Eli had just said. How happy would I have been if it was you? I thought. Why wasn't it you?

A sigh escaped my lips. I didn't want to ruin the moment. I looked over at Eli—present, devoted, overflowing with love. Maybe this was my second chance at something beautiful. Maybe love didn't always come from the past, but from the one willing to stay.

"Thank you, Eli," I said quietly. "For loving me the way you do."

He smiled and grabbed me again, kissing my forehead. "You don't need to thank me, Tracy. Loving you is the easiest thing I've ever done."

Later that afternoon, Eli took me by the hand and led me down the wooden walkway that curved over the clear blue water. The air was warm and alive, filled with the sound of the sea. I took a deep breath, inhaling the salty freshness, feeling alive in a way I hadn't for years.

We kicked off our sandals and ran along the beach, laughing as the waves chased our feet. A playful splash turned into a chase, and soon we both tumbled onto the soft, wet sand, breathless with laughter. Eli looked at me with that familiar spark—the one that made my heart flutter despite my doubts.

"You're beautiful when you laugh," he said softly.

My cheeks flushed as I smiled, brushing sand from my arms. "And you're the most handsome man ever." I lied. Deep down, My Romeo was the most handsome but still, I wanted Eli to feel special too.

"I'll do anything for you Tracy, I mean it." Eli confessed again.

To him, it felt like he doubted what I feel for him, knowing how reluctantly I've loved him within these past few weeks. He was ready to do anything for me just to be his. I'll call this type of love — an impression. Only time will tell whether he's genuine or not.

A few moments later, my phone buzzed. It was Sonia.

"Hey, island girl!" Sonia's voice rang with excitement through the speaker. "How's paradise treating you?"

I laughed, looking out at the water glistening under the setting sun. "It's unreal, Sonia. You wouldn't believe how beautiful this place is."

Eli smiled at me from where he sat on the sand, eyes full of quiet affection.

"I can tell," Sonia teased. "You sound... different. Happy."

I paused, my gaze softening. "Yeah," I said after a moment. "I think I am."

"You've got to enjoy every moment of your time babe. Put aside whatever that will bring sadness or confusion to this vacation. I trust Eli to take good care of you, and so doing — also make this moment worth it with him. He's a good man." Sonia's voice rang from the phone.

"Yeah sure babe, I'll. Thank you for calling, bye."

And as the waves crashed gently behind me, I realized I was finally beginning to let go—of the past, the what-ifs, and the ghosts of lost love. For the first time in a long time, I was open to the possibility that maybe—just maybe—love was finding me again, right where I sat.

Later, as the evening settled over Ifuru island, the horizon melted into shades of gold and rose. Eli and I dined under a thatched canopy by the sea, the sound of the waves mingling with soft music in the background. The candles flickered between us, casting warm light over our faces as we ate easily—there was no rush, no worries, just the rhythm of the ocean and the comfort of being together.

After dinner, we returned to our villa

Eli poured us each a glass of white wine. I took a sip, the cool sweetness dancing on my tongue. He watched me — the way I smiled between words, the curve of my cheek when I laughed.

"You look like you were born for this place," he said softly.

I tilted my head, amused. "You think so?"

"I know so," he replied, his voice low. "It's like the island's light found a way to live in you."

I felt my pulse quicken, a warmth spreading through me that wasn't from the wine. There was something in the way he spoke — gentle but sure, like each word was meant for me alone. He knew how to use his words.

"It's been a long day. Time to take our shower and relax, shall we?" He asked standing, stretching his hand to take mine."

I smiled, and took his hand. By now, I was already half drunk, everything he said, amused me. I loved the feeling, I wanted more.

When we stepped into the shower, the sound of water filled the air. I felt shy at first, my heart fluttering wildly, but Eli moved with quiet grace, giving me space yet drawing me in with every small glance, every brush of his hand as he helped me rinse the salt from my hair.

"You're beautiful," he whispered, his voice deep almost like a secret.

I turned to him, searching his face — his eyes held something unguarded, tender. "You keep saying that," I murmured.

"Because every time I look at you," he said, "I find a new reason."

My breath seized for some seconds. The air between us thickened, not with urgency but with something deeper — that slow, magnetic pull of two souls finally daring to meet halfway.

When we drifted toward the bedroom, the lights were dimmed to blue. Eli reached for my hand, his thumb tracing slow circles on my palm. He was doing something to my soul. The rhythm of the waves outside echoed the rising rhythm of my heartbeat.

I could feel my nerves and longing tangled together — a quiet storm building in my chest. He leaned close enough that I could feel the warmth of his breath against my ear. He sucked it gently, and then whispered.

"Tell me if you want me to stop,"

I closed my eyes. "Don't stop," I breathed.

He smiled, brushing his lips against my forehead before pulling me closer. Every thrust was unhurried, deliberate — a dance between hesitation and desire, between trust and surrender. I felt my body respond to every small touch, every whispered word, as if my heart understood the language before my mind did.

"Eli," I whispered, my voice trembling.

He looked into my eyes. "I just want you to feel safe with me," he said.

"I do," I whispered back. "That's what scares me."

He pressed a gentle kiss to my shoulder, his moan barely above the sound of the sea. "Then we'll move as slow as you need."

Time seemed to dissolve around us — there was only breath, warmth, and the quiet dance of the ocean outside. I felt something inside me shift — not just desire but trust, the kind that comes only once you've stopped running from yourself.

Later, as we lay wrapped in silence, Eli traced slow lines on my skin, the gentle traces that ignited my body without words.

"You know," he murmured, "I've never wanted anything more than I want to keep this peace with you."

I smiled faintly, my eyes still closed. "Then don't let it fade," I whispered.

"I won't," he promised.

And with the sea whispering beneath the stars, we drifted together into a calm that felt like forever.
