The heavy steel doors of the vault unlocked with a loud CLANG.
Nico stood up, offering Mara his arm. She took it, her legs trembling weakly under her heavy black dress.
They walked out of the vault in complete silence. Up the stone stairs, through the empty upper corridors, and into the waiting car.
The door slammed shut and the engine purred to life
Three blocks of total silence passed. Mara stared out the tinted window, watching the city blur by. Her hands were shaking so badly in her lap that she had to clasp them together to make them stop.
Finally, Nico spoke. "Bruno planted the evidence. He bought the maid."
"How do you know?"
"Because I know Bruno. And I know my father." His jaw was tight. "Gio had enemies, but none of them had access to his medication except family."
"So what do we do?" Mara asked, her voice tight.
"You stay in the South Wing. You don't speak to anyone except Elena and Aunt Rosa. And you let me handle this."
"Handle it how?"
Nico didn't answer.
