Mara came down to breakfast to find Aunt Rosa already there.
The older woman was sitting at the small dining table with an espresso and the morning paper, reading with the focused attention of someone who considered being interrupted a personal offense. She didn't look up when Mara came in; she simply turned a page.
"Good morning," Mara said.
Rosa glanced up briefly. "You're looking better than yesterday."
"I feel better too," Mara replied.
Rosa nodded and went back to the paper, which Mara interpreted as a get well soon card from her.
Mara poured her own coffee from the sealed pot Elena had started bringing as a matter of routine. She looked at the food Elena had left, then at the empty corridor through the open doorway. She reached for the bread.
"Church," Rosa said, without looking up from the paper.
Mara looked at her. "Uhn?"
