Chapter 22 - Chapter Twenty-Two:Elena First Move

Elena

Power is rarely loud.

The most dangerous kind moves quietly, carefully, like a blade sliding between ribs before anyone realizes they've been wounded.

Elena Romano has always preferred that kind of power.

The private dining room of the restaurant is dimly lit, designed for discretion. Soft golden lights glow above the table, and the low murmur of the main dining hall beyond the closed doors creates the illusion of privacy.

But Elena knows better than to trust illusions.

Privacy is something powerful people manufacture, not something they rely on.

She sits at the head of the long table, one leg crossed elegantly over the other, a glass of deep red wine resting between her fingers. Outside the tall windows, rain drifts across Manhattan, blurring the city lights into streaks of gold and white.

Across from her sits Marco Bellini.

Marco is a careful man. The kind who watches everything and reveals nothing unless it benefits him.

Which is exactly why Elena invited him tonight.

"You're certain about this?" Marco asks, his voice low enough that it doesn't travel beyond the table.

Elena lifts the wine glass slightly, studying the dark liquid as if the answer might be floating inside it.

"Certain about what?" she replies calmly.

Marco leans back in his chair.

"Victor Hale."

The name settles between them like something heavy.

In this city, people say Victor's name carefully.

Some with respect.

Some with fear.

Elena says it with interest.

She places the wine glass gently on the table.

"Victor is predictable."

Marco raises an eyebrow.

"Most people would disagree."

"That's because most people misunderstand him," Elena says.

Victor Hale has spent years building a reputation that protects him a reputation built on discipline, strategy, and control. To outsiders, he looks untouchable.

But Elena has watched him long enough to know better.

Even the most controlled men have fractures.

You just have to find where the pressure belongs.

"And you think you understand him?" Marco asks.

Elena smiles slightly.

"I think I understand men like him."

Marco studies her carefully.

"And what kind of man is Victor Hale?"

"A man who believes control equals power."

"And you disagree?"

"No," Elena says softly.

"I just know control eventually breaks."

Marco taps one finger lightly against the table.

"You believe you can break him."

"I believe he can break himself."

Marco's eyes narrow slightly.

"How?"

Elena reaches beside her plate and picks up a thin folder resting on the table.

Without a word, she slides it across to him.

Marco opens it.

Inside are photographs.

Several of them.

A woman walking along a rain-slick sidewalk.

The same woman entering an apartment building.

The same woman sitting alone in a café near a window.

Marco studies the images for several seconds before speaking.

"Lina Moreno."

"Yes."

"The woman who left Victor."

Elena nods once.

Marco flips to the next photo.

"And you've been watching her."

"Of course."

Marco closes the folder slowly.

"Victor won't like that."

Elena lets out a quiet laugh.

"Victor doesn't like many things."

"That hasn't stopped him before."

"No," Elena agrees.

"But it might stop him now."

Marco tilts his head slightly.

"You're assuming she still matters."

Elena leans back in her chair, her posture perfectly relaxed.

"Men like Victor never truly let go of something that once belonged to them."

Marco's eyes sharpen slightly.

"Belonged?"

Elena smiles.

"That's how he sees it."

"But she left him."

"Yes."

"And you think that didn't change anything?"

Elena studies the rain sliding down the window beside them.

"No," she says calmly.

"I think it made things worse."

Marco watches her carefully.

"How so?"

"Because Victor Hale is used to controlling everything in his life."

"Which he does very well."

"Yes."

"But Lina Moreno is the one thing he couldn't control."

Marco considers that quietly.

"That doesn't necessarily make her important."

"No," Elena says.

"It makes her dangerous."

Marco taps the folder again.

"And you're planning to use her."

"I'm planning to reveal something Victor would prefer remain hidden."

"And what is that?"

Elena's smile becomes colder.

"That he still cares."

Marco leans forward slightly.

"And if you're wrong?"

Elena lifts her wine again.

"Then nothing happens."

"And if you're right?"

She takes a slow sip.

"Then Victor makes a mistake."

Marco exhales slowly.

"The Romano family doesn't make investments based on guesses."

"This isn't a guess."

"Then what is it?"

Elena sets the glass down again.

"An observation."

Marco raises an eyebrow.

Elena reaches into her bag and places a phone on the table.

She taps the screen once and slides it toward him.

Marco looks down.

A call log is displayed.

Victor Hale.

Lina Moreno.

Late last night.

Marco's expression shifts slightly.

"He called her."

"Yes."

Marco looks up.

"You're certain?"

"Completely."

"And how did you get this?"

Elena's smile returns.

"Let's just say Victor is not the only person in this city who understands surveillance."

Marco leans back again.

"So he knows."

"Yes."

"And he hasn't reacted."

Elena's eyes narrow slightly.

"That part is interesting."

Victor Hale is not known for patience when it comes to threats.

Normally, anyone who even approaches his personal life disappears quickly and quietly.

But this time…

Victor has done nothing.

Which means one of two things.

Either he's planning something.

Or he's protecting Lina in a way that keeps her out of sight.

Marco breaks the silence.

"What's the next step?"

Elena picks up her wine again.

"The next step," she says calmly, "is reminding Victor that power has limits."

"And Lina?"

Elena's eyes flicker with something colder.

"Lina Moreno is simply the message."

Marco studies her carefully.

"Messages sometimes get… damaged."

Elena shrugs lightly.

"That depends on how quickly Victor learns."

Marco leans forward slightly.

"And if he doesn't?"

Elena's smile returns slowly.

Then she says the words quietly.

"Then the city will learn something very important."

Marco waits.

Elena lifts her glass once more.

"That Victor Hale isn't as untouchable as everyone believes."

Thunder rolls faintly across the sky outside.

Rain intensifies against the window.

And somewhere in the city tonight.

Elena Romano has already made her first move.

She just hasn't decided yet…

How far she's willing to push it.
