Chapter 56 - Chapter Fifty-Six: ALMOST SOMETHING

The evening air in Chicago carries the cool scent of the lake and the distant hum of traffic.

By the time Lina and Daniel leave the Hale Industries building, the sky has already begun turning shades of deep blue and soft gold.

The city lights are slowly waking up.

Daniel holds the glass door open for her.

"After you."

Lina steps outside, wrapping her light coat slightly tighter around herself.

"Thank you."

They walk side by side toward the sidewalk where the street glows with headlights and neon reflections.

For a few moments neither of them speaks.

The day had been long.

Meetings.

Presentations.

Victor's intense presence hovering over every conversation.

Finally Daniel exhales quietly.

"Your boss is… something."

Lina laughs softly.

"That's a safe description."

"I'm still deciding if he's intimidating or just extremely confident."

"Both."

Daniel glances at her.

"You worked with him for a long time, didn't you?"

"Yes."

"How did you survive?"

Lina smiles faintly.

"I learned quickly."

"To do what?"

"To stand my ground."

Daniel nods slowly.

"That explains a lot."

They reach the corner where the street opens toward the riverwalk.

The water below reflects the lights of the surrounding skyscrapers like liquid glass.

Daniel gestures toward the path.

"Walk?"

Lina hesitates only briefly.

"Sure."

The riverwalk is quieter than the busy streets above.

A few couples stroll past them.

Someone nearby plays soft music from a portable speaker.

The city feels calmer here.

Daniel rests his hands casually in the pockets of his jacket.

"You seem lighter tonight."

Lina glances at him.

"Do I?"

"Yes."

"Maybe I'm just tired."

"Maybe."

But Daniel doesn't believe that.

Because when Lina laughs beside him, it sounds genuine.

Not forced.

And he likes that sound more than he expected.

They continue walking slowly.

At one point Lina stops near the railing overlooking the water.

The wind lifts a few strands of her hair.

Daniel leans beside her.

"You know," he says, "Chicago looks different at night."

"How?"

"Less aggressive."

Lina laughs.

"That might be the first time anyone has described this city that way."

Daniel shrugs.

"Maybe I'm biased."

"Because you grew up here?"

"Partly."

He pauses for a moment.

"Also because I'm seeing it differently now."

Lina turns toward him.

"Why?"

Daniel holds her gaze.

"Because of the company."

The words hang quietly between them.

Lina feels her heartbeat shift slightly.

Daniel doesn't rush the moment.

He never does.

That's one of the things that makes him easy to be around.

Eventually Lina smiles softly.

"You're very smooth."

"I'm being honest."

"That's even more dangerous."

Daniel laughs.

"Should I stop?"

"No."

Her answer is quiet.

And sincere.

The moment stretches.

Neither of them moves.

The lights from the buildings reflect across the river behind Lina, casting a soft glow around her.

Daniel studies her face.

The subtle curve of her smile.

The warmth in her eyes.

For a brief second he almost reaches for her hand.

Almost.

But he stops himself.

Because something about Lina still feels guarded.

Like part of her heart remains somewhere else.

So instead he says lightly,

"Dinner?"

Lina blinks.

"That was a smooth transition."

"I practice."

She laughs.

"Okay. Dinner."

They find a small restaurant tucked between two historic buildings along the river.

Inside, the space is warm and intimate.

Low lights.

Soft music.

The smell of fresh pasta and herbs drifting through the air.

They sit at a table near the window.

Lina orders a glass of wine.

Daniel chooses whiskey.

Their conversation flows easily.

Work stories.

Travel.

Childhood memories.

Daniel talks about growing up in Chicago with his mother.

"How long was it just the two of you?" Lina asks.

"Always."

"Your father never came around?"

Daniel shakes his head.

"No."

"Did you ever try to find him?"

"Once."

"What happened?"

Daniel smiles faintly.

"I realized I didn't need to."

Lina studies him carefully.

"You don't seem bitter."

"I had a good life."

He shrugs slightly.

"My mom made sure of that."

The warmth in his voice makes Lina smile.

"She must have been incredible."

"She was."

A quiet pause settles between them.

Then Daniel asks gently,

"What about you?"

"My family?"

"Yes."

Lina nods.

"They're loud."

Daniel laughs.

"That sounds promising."

"And protective."

"That also sounds promising."

"They still treat me like I'm sixteen."

"Parents tend to do that."

Their food arrives.

They continue talking, laughing occasionally.

The evening feels natural.

Comfortable.

Simple.

And for Lina, that simplicity feels surprisingly rare.

Later, when they step outside again, the city has grown quieter.

Daniel walks her back toward her hotel.

When they reach the entrance, both of them slow slightly.

Lina turns toward him.

"Thank you for tonight."

Daniel smiles.

"I enjoyed it."

"So did I."

For a moment neither of them moves.

Daniel looks down at her.

"You know something?"

"What?"

"You're easier to read when you're relaxed."

Lina raises an eyebrow.

"Oh really?"

"Yes."

"And what am I thinking right now?"

Daniel smiles slightly.

"You're deciding whether tonight was a date."

Lina laughs.

"That's very confident."

"Was I wrong?"

She tilts her head.

"Maybe."

Daniel leans slightly closer.

"Should I ask?"

Lina feels her heart beat a little faster.

"You could."

"Then I will."

He pauses.

"Lina… would you like to go out with me again?"

She studies his face.

Daniel Carter.

Kind.

Steady.

Honest.

So different from the storm that had once been Victor Hale.

"Yes," she says softly.

Daniel smiles.

"Good."

But as Lina turns to walk inside the hotel…

her phone vibrates in her bag.

She checks the screen.

One new message.

Unknown number.

She opens it.

Three simple words appear on the screen.

Stay away from him.

Lina's smile fades.

Because somehow…

she already knows exactly who sent it.

Victor Hale.
