Chapter 57 - Chapter Fifty- Seven:THE WARNING

Morning in Chicago arrives wrapped in steel-gray clouds and cool wind drifting off the lake.

The streets below the Hale Industries tower are already alive with movement cars flowing through traffic, business professionals walking quickly with coffee cups in hand, the city beginning another relentless day.

Inside the executive floor, the atmosphere is quieter.

Focused.

Lina steps out of the elevator holding her tablet against her chest.

She slept badly.

Not because of work.

Not because of the presentation.

Because of three words that had stayed in her mind all night.

Stay away from him.

Victor Hale's message.

Her jaw tightens slightly as she walks down the hallway.

She isn't confused.

She isn't surprised.

But she is annoyed.

Because Victor Hale does not get to control her life anymore.

Not after everything that happened between them.

She reaches the conference room where the team is already preparing for another meeting.

Chloe looks up immediately.

"Well good morning, mysterious woman."

Lina sighs.

"Please don't start."

Chloe grins.

"Oh I'm definitely starting."

"Why?"

"You came back to the hotel glowing last night."

Lina freezes for half a second.

"I did not."

"You did."

Chloe leans forward across the table.

"Dinner with Daniel went well?"

Lina tries to sound casual.

"It was nice."

"Nice?" Chloe repeats dramatically. "That's the most suspicious word in the English language."

Before Lina can answer, the door opens.

Daniel walks in.

He's wearing a charcoal-gray suit today, the jacket fitted perfectly across his shoulders, his tie slightly loosened as if he had already been working for hours.

Lina notices immediately.

Chloe notices her noticing.

"Oh wow," Chloe mutters quietly.

Lina elbows her.

Daniel approaches the table with an easy smile.

"Morning."

"Morning," Lina replies.

Their eyes meet briefly.

Something warm passes between them.

And that exact moment is when Victor Hale enters the room.

The temperature changes instantly.

Victor is dressed in a dark navy suit, his presence commanding attention the second he steps inside.

He greets the room politely.

But when his eyes land on Lina and Daniel standing near each other…

his expression hardens almost imperceptibly.

The meeting begins.

Victor leads the discussion with his usual sharp focus, guiding the conversation through project logistics and expansion strategies.

But Lina notices something.

Every time Daniel speaks…

Victor watches him.

Closely.

Studying him like a problem that hasn't been solved yet.

Daniel seems to notice too.

But he remains calm.

Professional.

The meeting ends an hour later.

People gather their documents and begin leaving the room.

Lina heads toward the hallway.

Before she can take more than three steps—

"Miss Moreno."

Victor's voice stops her.

She turns slowly.

Victor stands near the door, hands in his pockets, watching her with that same unreadable expression.

"Walk with me."

Lina sighs quietly.

Of course.

They move down the hallway together toward the private terrace overlooking the city.

The wind outside is colder than yesterday.

Lina crosses her arms slightly as she faces him.

"You texted me."

Victor's gaze remains steady.

"Yes."

"Why?"

"You know why."

"No," she says firmly. "I don't."

Victor's jaw tightens slightly.

"Daniel Carter."

Lina laughs once, without humor.

"Ah. There it is."

"You shouldn't get involved with him."

"And why exactly is that your decision?"

Victor's voice lowers.

"Because I'm telling you to be careful."

"You sent a warning."

"Yes."

"That's not the same thing."

Victor steps closer.

"Lina—"

"No," she interrupts. "You don't get to do this."

Victor's eyes darken.

"Do what?"

"Control my choices."

"I'm not controlling you."

"You literally texted me stay away from him."

Victor exhales slowly.

His patience is thinning.

"You don't understand the situation."

"Then explain it."

He goes silent.

Because he can't.

Not yet.

Not without revealing something far bigger.

Lina studies him carefully.

"That's what I thought."

She turns to leave.

Victor grabs her wrist gently.

Not rough.

But firm enough to stop her.

"Lina."

She turns back slowly.

"Let go."

Victor releases her immediately.

But the tension between them crackles like electricity.

"You trust him too easily," Victor says quietly.

"And you don't trust anyone."

"That's different."

"Is it?"

Victor's voice drops even lower.

"You don't know who he is."

Lina stares at him.

"And apparently neither do you."

Victor freezes slightly.

The words land harder than she intended.

Because deep down…

she's not entirely wrong.

Lina shakes her head.

"You lost the right to interfere in my life a long time ago."

Victor watches her carefully.

"You think that's what this is about?"

"Isn't it?"

"No."

His answer comes instantly.

Too quickly.

Lina studies him.

"Then what is it about?"

Victor hesitates.

For the first time in a long time…

Victor Hale doesn't have control of the conversation.

Because the truth sitting inside his office could change everything.

And he still doesn't know what to do with it.

Finally Lina steps back.

"I'm not staying away from Daniel."

Victor's jaw tightens.

"That's your choice."

"Yes," she says firmly.

"It is."

She walks away.

Victor remains on the terrace long after she's gone.

The wind moves through the open space around him, carrying the distant sounds of the city below.

Inside his office…

the file containing Daniel Carter's past still sits on his desk.

And the truth inside it is becoming impossible to ignore.

Because sooner or later…

Victor Hale is going to have to face the reality that the man Lina is beginning to fall for

is the brother he never knew existed.
