Chapter 59 - Chapter Fifty-Nine:ELENA’S MOVE

The evening sky over Chicago glows with the soft amber light of sunset, the tall glass towers reflecting streaks of gold across the skyline.

Inside the Hale Industries building, most of the offices have already begun to empty.

But the executive floor is still alive.

Assistants move quietly between offices, late meetings continue behind closed doors, and the soft glow of city lights begins to replace the fading daylight outside.

Elena Rossi stands near the long window in Victor's private office.

The view from the forty-second floor stretches across the river and into the heart of the city.

Chicago looks beautiful from above.

Controlled.

Orderly.

Predictable.

Elena sips slowly from the glass of red wine in her hand.

Victor stands behind his desk, reviewing documents on his tablet.

He hasn't said much since she arrived.

Which means he's thinking.

And when Victor Hale thinks too much, something dangerous is usually happening in his head.

Elena watches him quietly for a moment before speaking.

"You're distracted."

Victor doesn't look up.

"I'm working."

"No," Elena replies calmly.

"You're pretending to work."

Victor finally lifts his eyes.

Elena's silver-gray dress catches the evening light, the fabric draping elegantly across her figure. The cut of the dress is sleek and modern, the open back revealing smooth skin framed by delicate silver chains resting lightly against her shoulders.

She looks exactly like she always does.

Perfect.

Composed.

Untouchable.

Victor sets the tablet down.

"What do you want, Elena?"

She smiles faintly.

"That's the Victor I know."

"What do you want?"

Elena walks slowly toward the desk, her heels soft against the polished floor.

"I had lunch with the New York team today."

Victor's expression remains neutral.

"And?"

"They're impressive."

"They're supposed to be."

"Elena pauses, studying his face.

"And Lina Moreno is the reason why."

Victor doesn't respond.

But the tension in his shoulders gives him away.

Elena leans lightly against the desk.

"She's talented."

"I know."

"She's also very calm under pressure."

"Yes."

Elena tilts her head slightly.

"And Daniel Carter seems quite fond of her."

Victor's jaw tightens.

"Elena—"

"What?" she says lightly.

"It's obvious."

Victor walks toward the window, his back turning slightly to her.

"She's allowed to date whoever she wants."

"Of course she is."

Elena watches him carefully.

"But you don't like it."

Victor looks out at the city lights beginning to flicker across the skyline.

"It's not my business."

Elena smiles slowly.

"That's the most dishonest thing you've said today."

Victor turns back toward her.

"What are you trying to do?"

Elena walks around the desk again, graceful and deliberate.

"Observe."

"You're interfering."

"I'm studying."

Victor folds his arms.

"You enjoy this."

Elena's eyes sparkle slightly.

"Human behavior fascinates me."

Victor shakes his head once.

"You're impossible."

"And you're predictable."

Elena pauses beside him near the window.

"You still love her."

Victor doesn't answer.

Which is answer enough.

Elena studies him carefully.

"And yet she's walking through the city with another man."

Victor's eyes darken slightly.

"Elena."

"Yes?"

"Stop."

But Elena isn't finished.

"You know what the interesting part is?"

Victor doesn't respond.

"Elena continues anyway.

"Daniel Carter is exactly the type of man Lina Moreno should fall in love with."

Victor turns toward her sharply.

"What does that mean?"

Elena's voice is calm.

"He's kind."

She raises one finger.

"He's patient."

Another finger.

"He makes her laugh."

Victor's jaw tightens.

"And most importantly…"

Elena meets his eyes.

"He's safe."

Victor exhales slowly.

"You're making assumptions."

"No."

Elena smiles slightly.

"I'm watching the story unfold."

Victor walks back toward his desk.

"Stay out of it."

"Why?"

"Because it's not a game."

Elena tilts her head thoughtfully.

"It is a little bit of a game."

Victor's patience is fading.

"Elena."

She lifts both hands slightly.

"Relax."

Victor looks at her carefully.

"You're planning something."

Elena smiles.

"I'm planning dinner."

Victor frowns slightly.

"Dinner?"

"Yes."

"A small executive gathering tomorrow night."

Victor already knows where this is going.

"No."

Elena's smile widens slightly.

"I already sent the invitations."

Victor closes his eyes briefly.

"Elena…"

"The New York team will attend."

Victor says nothing.

"And of course Daniel Carter."

Victor's jaw tightens again.

"And Lina Moreno."

Silence fills the office.

Elena studies his reaction carefully.

Victor finally speaks.

"You're creating a situation."

Elena shrugs lightly.

"I'm creating an opportunity."

"For what?"

Elena's smile is almost mischievous.

"To see what happens when people stop pretending."

Victor stares at her.

"You enjoy chaos."

"No," Elena says softly.

"I enjoy truth."

She walks toward the door.

Before leaving, she turns back once more.

"You should come tomorrow night."

Victor's voice is cold.

"It's my building."

"Then you definitely should attend."

Elena pauses for one final moment.

"Oh."

Victor looks up.

"What?"

Elena smiles.

"Daniel Carter mentioned something interesting today."

Victor's eyes narrow slightly.

"What?"

"He said Chicago used to feel like home."

Victor freezes.

Just slightly.

But Elena notices.

"Strange thing to say for someone who claims he hasn't lived here in years."

Victor says nothing.

Elena watches him carefully.

Then she leaves the office.

The door closes quietly behind her.

Victor stands alone again.

The city lights shimmer across the glass walls of the office.

On his desk…

Daniel's investigation file waits.

Victor stares at it for a long moment.

Because Elena might think she's playing a game.

But the truth inside that folder is not a game at all.

It's a bomb.

And when it finally explodes…

everyone's life will change.
