Chapter 45 - New family

The duo came down from the building.

And they brought a extra with them.

A small kid.

Sora was reminded of the children back at the orphanage.

Maybe he should contact them.

"Gojo sensei. We got rid of the spirits living in the haunted building."

Yuji came down first with the child in hand.

"Oh! And we found a survivor as well."

He brought the kid infront of him and showed to us.

Sora can imagine what was going to happen now.

---

The child was truly a non sorcerer.

So as a dutiful strongest sorcerer, Gojo took him back to his home.

Megumi also went with Gojo sensei.

Either it was to leave the kid at his home or to watch over Gojo's actions.

It could also be both.

Sora was tired of today's adventure.

Coming to this place and fighting Gojo took out his motivation to stay awake.

Maybe he could eat something good on the way back home.

"Sora-kun! Why are you standing there and brooding like Megumi. Sit here."

Yuji's voice blasted from behind.

Sora glanced back.

Yuji and Nobara were sitting on the steps of the building.

Scratching his head, Sora also headed towards the steps and sat down.

He sat to the right to Yuji and infront of Nobara.

Yuji leaned back on his hands, stretching his legs out over the cracked steps.

The sky above the ruined building was slowly darkening, the last orange light hanging over the city like the edge of a dying fire.

For a while, neither of them spoke.

Then Yuji suddenly grinned.

"You really do look like you're about to fall asleep."

Sora glanced at him.

"I might."

"You can't. You still have to hear how cool I was in there."

Sora looked at him for a second.

Then he sighed quietly.

"Fine."

Yuji sat up straighter immediately.

"So first, I was walking through one of the hallways by myself."

He moved his hands around while speaking, acting everything out.

"The place was creepy. Like seriously creepy. There were weird noises coming from every direction."

Sora stayed quiet and listened.

"Then out of nowhere, one of those curse things jumped me from the ceiling."

Yuji clapped his hands together.

"Like bam!"

Sora stared at him.

"You have quite the charm to be ambushed."

Yuji frowned.

"That only happened twice."

"That is already too many times."

Yuji ignored that.

"Anyway, this curse had way too many arms and this gross mouth on its stomach. It caught me off guard for a second, but it wasn't that strong."

He made a punching motion.

"So I cut it with my cleaver it."

"Of course."

Yuji grinned.

Sora could imagine it clearly.

"But then deeper inside, there was another curse."

Yuji's smile faded a little.

"This one was different."

Sora looked at him.

"Differently strong?"

"Differently smart."

That caught Sora's attention.

Yuji rested his elbows on his knees.

"It had already found the kid before I got there. Nobara was also helpless against it."

Sora's eyes narrowed slightly.

A smart curse who can take hostage.

Nothing new.

He also got catfished by a similar one years ago.

"But I quickly saved the kid and let Nobara handle the curse."

Yuji went on.

"What do you think? Did we do great?"

Did they do great?

Sora looked like he was in deep thought.

Yuji and even the silent Nobara were tense in anticipation.

Gojo said that Sora was too much for the curse to handle.

Maybe he was a second grade or first grade sorcerer.

"To be honest..."

Sora started speaking but stopped midway to think again.

The tension in the atmosphere reached its peak.

"It was fine for your first endeavour."

"Really Sora kun? You sound a little reluctant to say that."

Yuji suspiciously asked.

"It was good for your first time. It's just that you could have died if any mishap happened."

Yuji's grin faltered a little.

"..."

Sora looked ahead at the broken entrance of the building.

"The kid survived, so it ended well. But if the curse had been stronger, or if there had been more than one, then things could have gone wrong very quickly."

Yuji rubbed the back of his neck.

"Yeah, I know."

"You rush in too much."

Yuji immediately pointed at him.

"You also rush in too much."

"No-no. I don't. Even if I had to it would be planned."

"Mine was as well."

Nobara finally snorted from where she sat across from them.

"Planned?That was insane."

Sora looked at her.

"You are one to talk. Yuji just said you fought the curse alone."

Nobara crossed her arms.

"And? I was winning."

"You were not."

"I was."

Yuji raised a hand.

"You were definitely not."

Nobara turned towards him with a glare sharp enough to cut paper.

"Whose side are you on?"

Yuji immediately looked away.

"Not yours."

Nobara clicked her tongue.

"Tch."

For a moment, the three of them sat there quietly.

The evening wind drifted through the empty street, carrying dust and the faint smell of concrete. Somewhere far away, a train rumbled past.

Then Nobara suddenly spoke again.

"But..."

Yuji and Sora both looked at her.

"We did save the kid."

Her voice was quieter than before.

"And we beat the curse."

Yuji blinked.

Then a grin spread across his face again.

"Yeah."

Nobara looked away immediately after saying it, as if annoyed that the words had escaped.

"Don't get emotional about it."

"I wasn't!"

"You were smiling."

"I was not."

"You are right now."

Nobara grabbed a loose chunk of concrete from the step and threw it at Yuji.

Yuji barely dodged to the side.

"It hurts!"

"Shut up."

Sora watched the two of them argue.

A loud idiot.

An angry idiot.

The thought made the corner of his mouth rise slightly.

Maybe this was not so bad.
