Chapter 33 - Ghxst Team

The first team finished their run exhausted.

Mud covered half their bodies. One player limped slightly as they left the obstacle field while the massive timer above the arena dropped to zero.

00:00

A horn sounded.

The crowd erupted into applause.

Workers immediately rushed onto the course.

Panels opened.

Hidden compartments were emptied.

Other compartments were closed again.

Dozens of staff members moved quickly across the obstacles resetting the field.

From the stands it almost looked like a swarm of ants rebuilding a giant machine.

Because that was exactly what it was.

The course was being rebuilt.

Again.

And again.

And again.

New objects.

New hiding places.

New traps.

On the giant screens above the arena a new name appeared.

The next team.

Another alliance.

Ten players stepped forward.

They disappeared into the course while the crowd shouted encouragement.

Ghost watched every second of it.

Not cheering.

Not reacting.

Studying.

His eyes moved across the field the same way a chess player studies a board.

Rex leaned beside him against the railing.

"You're doing that thing again."

Ghost didn't look away from the course.

"What thing?"

"The thinking thing."

Ghost's mouth twitched slightly.

"Helpful observation."

Rex shrugged.

"I'm just saying… this isn't Bear Trap. You don't need to analyze the ocean."

Ghost shook his head slowly.

"This is worse."

Rex frowned.

"How?"

Ghost pointed toward the rope bridge where a player had just found an object hidden under one of the beams.

"That hiding spot wasn't there five minutes ago."

Rex looked closer.

"You sure?"

Ghost nodded.

"They changed the entire section."

Peachy appeared beside them, carrying two energy bars.

"You two look like conspiracy theorists."

She handed one to Ghost.

He took it automatically.

"Watch the panels near the mud trench," he said quietly.

Peachy followed his gaze.

A player kicked open a metal flap.

A cube rolled out.

Peachy blinked.

"Oh."

Ghost nodded once.

"Exactly."

Liam joined them.

"So what's the strategy, genius?"

Ghost finally turned away from the course.

"Don't run straight."

Rex laughed.

"That's literally what everyone is doing."

"Which means they're missing half the objects."

Peachy tilted her head.

"You're thinking search patterns."

Ghost nodded.

"Three searchers."

He pointed toward the field.

"Two runners."

Then toward the baskets.

"One collector."

"And the rest?"

"Support."

Liam grinned.

"Now that sounds like you."

Above the arena the screen changed again.

The second team finished.

Another horn echoed.

The field reset.

Workers moved like clockwork across the structures again.

New objects.

New hiding spots.

Ghost folded his arms.

Twenty minutes later the screen changed again.

And this time—

their alliance name appeared.

The crowd reacted instantly.

Cheers exploded from their section of the arena.

Peachy cracked her neck.

"Well."

Rex grinned.

"Showtime."

The crowd reacted instantly.

Ghost stepped forward first.

The nine players of their team moved toward the starting line.

The sand beneath their boots felt warmer now under the rising sun.

The massive obstacle field stretched ahead of them.

Silent.

Waiting.

But before the timer above the arena reset, Ivy lifted a hand.

The noise in the stadium slowly faded.

Several players turned toward her in confusion.

She stepped down from the stage and walked toward the starting line where Ghost's team was waiting.

A ripple moved through the crowd.

Murmurs spread immediately.

"Wait… is she joining them?"

"No way."

"She built the arena!"

"She can't run it!"

Ivy stopped beside the team and spoke into the microphone attached to her collar.

"For this challenge … I will be part of the team."

The arena erupted.

Shouting.

Laughter.

Confusion.

Rex blinked.

"You've got to be kidding me."

Peachy leaned toward Ghost.

"Oh this is going to be good."

But Ivy raised one hand calmly, quieting the arena.

"I know what some of you are thinking."

Her voice carried clearly across the stadium.

"That this could be seen as cheating."

A few players shouted agreement.

She didn't react.

"So let me be clear."

She turned slightly toward the course.

"I will not search for objects."

She held up one finger.

"I will not open hidden compartments."

Another finger.

"And I will not reveal any hiding spots."

The giant screens zoomed in on her.

"My role will be very simple."

She glanced briefly toward Ghost's team.

"If one of my teammates gives me an object…"

She pointed toward the giant alliance basket.

"…I will run it to the basket."

Murmurs spread again.

"I will only carry objects."

"Nothing more."

Peachy tilted her head.

"So basically… we get a delivery runner."

Ghost didn't answer.

He was watching Ivy.

Studying her expression.

Rex leaned closer to him.

"You okay with that?"

Ghost shrugged slightly.

"She made the rules."

Peachy grinned.

"And she's fast."

Ivy finished calmly.

"I will participate under the same time limit as everyone else."

She stepped into position beside the team.

"Twenty-five minutes."

The massive timer above the arena flickered.

25:00

The horn operator raised his hand.

The crowd leaned forward in anticipation.

Ghost glanced once toward Ivy.

"You ready to run your own maze?" he asked quietly.

A faint smile crossed her face.

"I built it."

Then she looked ahead toward the obstacle field.

"But I never said it would be easy."

The horn blasted across the arena.

The timer began to fall.

25:00

24:59

24:58

And Ghost's team launched into the course.

The horn blasted across the arena.

Ghost moved instantly.

But unlike the teams before them, his group didn't sprint blindly across the course.

They spread.

Fast.

Controlled.

Exactly the way he had planned.

"Three runners!" Ghost shouted while running.

"Ivy — center lane!"

He pointed across the course.

"Ethan left!"

"Marco right!"

The two teammates nodded immediately.

Those three wouldn't search.

They would run objects to the basket.

Everyone else would hunt.

Because of the rule.

One object per player.

Which meant wasting time carrying things across the entire field could cost them dozens of discoveries.

Peachy grinned while sliding across the sand.

"Courier service."

Ghost smirked slightly.

"Exactly."

The obstacle course stretched ahead of them.

Climbing nets.

Rope bridges.

Mud trenches.

Rotating beams.

Thousands of possible hiding spots.

And somewhere among them—

the objects that would decide the castle battle.

Ghost veered toward the first metal support beam.

His fingers brushed the frame.

There.

A seam hidden under dried mud.

He kicked it.

CLACK

A small metal capsule dropped into the sand.

Peachy grabbed it.

"Runner!"

Ivy appeared instantly.

Peachy tossed the capsule to her without slowing.

Ivy caught it and sprinted toward the massive alliance basket across the arena.

The crowd roared.

Ghost didn't watch her go.

He was already moving again.

Rex dropped from the climbing net beside him.

"Anything?"

Ghost pointed toward the rope tunnel support.

"Kick the joint."

Rex slammed his boot against the metal hinge.

The joint rotated.

A hidden compartment opened.

Two objects dropped from inside.

Liam grabbed one.

Rex took the other.

But instead of running across the arena—

they shouted.

"Marco!" "Ethan!"

The second runner appeared from the right lane.

They handed him the object.

They sprinted away toward the basket.

The system worked perfectly.

Searchers stayed on the field.

Runners carried objects.

Speed multiplied.

Peachy slid into the mud trench and kicked open a hidden hatch beneath the surface.

A silver token rolled free.

"Another!"

She tossed it toward Ivy who just come back.

She caught it and ran again.

Across the arena the crowd was already chanting.

Because Ghost's team had figured something out quickly.

Most teams had wasted time running their own objects back.

But Ghost had built a supply chain.

Search.

Pass.

Deliver.

Repeat.

Ghost climbed onto the balance beam structure.

Instead of crossing it he crouched and examined the support brackets underneath.

A small locking mechanism sat inside the frame.

He twisted it.

CLICK

A compartment opened.

Two metal cylinders dropped into the water trench below.

Peachy jumped down and grabbed them.

"Two more!"

Ivy returned just in time.

Peachy tossed one to her.

The other to Ethan.

Both runners turned and sprinted in opposite directions toward the basket.

Ghost looked up at the massive timer above the arena.

21:48

Four minutes gone.

And they had already collected more objects than most teams had found in their entire run.

Peachy climbed beside him again.

"You realize we look organized."

Ghost smirked.

"That's dangerous."

Rex landed beside them.

"What's next?"

Ghost pointed to the rope tower.

"Top section."

Peachy's eyes lit up.

"Mine."

She climbed fast.

The rotating structure moved slowly beneath her hands.

Halfway up she kicked one hollow bar.

Nothing.

Another.

Still nothing.

Then—

CLACK

A hidden panel opened.

Something black dropped from inside the structure.

Peachy caught it against her chest.

She froze.

"…Ghost."

He looked up.

"What?"

"This one's different."

She dropped down and handed it to him.

Ghost turned the object in his hand.

A small black cube.

Marked with the castle emblem.

Rex leaned closer.

"That looks important."

Ghost nodded slowly.

"Yeah."

Peachy raised an eyebrow.

"What does it do?"

Ghost tossed it to Ivy.

"No idea."

"But we're keeping it."

She ran.

The moment she dropped the cube into the basket the arena exploded with noise.

Because everyone watching understood something.

That wasn't just an object.

That was a castle item.

Something that would matter later.

Back on the course Ghost was already scanning the next section.

The mud trench.

But something about it looked different now.

The sand beneath the obstacle trembled.

Ghost froze.

"Wait."

Peachy blinked.

"What?"

A low mechanical rumble echoed beneath the ground.

Then suddenly—

WHOOSH

Jets of muddy water blasted upward across the trench.

The entire section turned into slippery chaos.

Peachy groaned.

"Oh come on."

Ghost laughed quietly.

"She couldn't resist."

Rex grinned.

"Technically not water."

"Mud."

Players watching from the stands howled with laughter.

Ivy returned just as another mud jet exploded across the ground.

She nearly slipped but caught the metal rail beside the obstacle.

Ghost pointed upward.

"Rails."

They climbed the side structure instead of crossing through the mud.

Balanced.

Careful.

Fast.

Below them the mud jets kept firing randomly.

Anyone running through the trench would lose seconds fighting the sludge.

But Ghost's team crossed above it.

Clean.

Efficient.

Peachy kicked another hidden compartment from the side frame.

A small bronze key dropped out.

"Runner!"

She tossed it to Ethan.

He sprinted away.

The timer dropped again.

17:09

The crowd was deafening now.

Ghost glanced briefly toward the stage.

Ivy had built this entire arena.

And yet now she was running inside it with them.

Carrying their objects.

Helping their team.

Peachy wiped mud from her hands.

"How many?"

Ghost glanced toward the basket.

"Ten."

Rex whistled.

"Not bad."

Ghost shook his head slightly.

"We're not done."

Because something still bothered him.

This entire course felt familiar.

Rotating walls.

Hidden compartments.

Strange objects.

Peachy noticed him watching the structures again.

"You're thinking."

Ghost nodded.

"This course…"

"What about it?"

He pointed toward the massive castle image displayed on the arena screens.

"It's training us."

Rex frowned.

"For what?"

Ghost looked toward the castle again.

"The maze inside."

Peachy followed his gaze.

Then she smiled slowly.

"Oh."

The realization hit them all at once.

Everything here—

hidden panels

moving structures

strange objects

—was preparing them for the final battle.

The timer continued falling.

15:22

Ghost stepped forward again.

"Alright," he said calmly.

"Let's keep robbing this place."

And the team plunged deeper into the obstacle field.

Because every object they collected now—

might decide who survived the castle later.

The next section of the course looked quieter.

Too quiet.

Rotating panels stood half-open, revealing narrow corridors between the metal structures. Sand covered most of the mechanisms on the ground, making it impossible to see where the next trap might trigger.

Ghost slowed slightly.

That alone was enough to make Peachy glance at him.

"You feel that too?"

Ghost nodded once.

"This part wasn't active earlier."

Rex jogged up behind them.

"Meaning?"

"Meaning watch your step."

They moved forward carefully.

Peachy slid beneath a low beam and kicked open another hidden compartment.

A small bronze object dropped out.

She grabbed it instantly.

"Runner!"

Ivy appeared beside them, already moving.

Peachy tossed the object into her hands.

Ivy caught it and pivoted smoothly, sprinting toward the basket once again.

The crowd followed her run with a wave of noise across the stadium.

Ghost watched the ground ahead of her.

Something about the sand looked wrong.

Too smooth.

Too even.

And then he saw it.

A thin line.

Barely visible.

His eyes widened.

"Ivy—"

But it was already happening.

The panel beneath her foot shifted.

The sand collapsed inward as a hidden trapdoor snapped open beneath the surface.

For half a second the ground simply vanished under her.

Ivy's foot slipped forward.

Her body pitched down toward the opening.

Gasps rippled through the arena.

But Ghost was already moving.

He lunged forward and grabbed her arm just as the trap fully opened beneath her.

The panel dropped away, revealing a narrow pit lined with rotating bars meant to slow anyone who fell inside.

Ivy's boot scraped the edge as she slipped.

Ghost pulled hard.

Her body swung sideways and collided against him instead of falling.

He wrapped one arm around her waist and dragged her back onto solid ground just as the trapdoor slammed shut again beneath them.

The crowd erupted.

Some cheering.

Some shouting.

Peachy burst out laughing behind them.

"Oh that was close."

Rex shook his head.

"Holy—"

Ghost barely heard them.

His focus was on Ivy.

For a second neither of them moved.

Her breathing was heavier now.

Adrenaline.

Her hand still held the object Peachy had given her.

Ghost stared at her.

"You trying to die in your own arena?" he muttered.

Ivy smirked slightly despite the situation.

"I designed the traps."

"Doesn't mean you can see all of them."

She looked down briefly at the closed panel beneath the sand.

"…fair point."

Ghost exhaled slowly.

Then before she could say anything else—

he grabbed the back of her neck and kissed her.

Not long.

Not slow.

Just sudden.

A quick, intense kiss that made several players nearby whistle loudly.

Peachy clapped once.

"Well that's motivating."

Ghost pulled back just as quickly.

Ivy blinked once, surprised.

"What was that for?"

Ghost shrugged.

"Keeping you alive."

Then he gave her a quick affectionate smack on the backside.

"Now run."

Peachy burst out laughing.

"Oh my god."

Rex pointed toward the basket.

"Runner!"

Ivy rolled her eyes but didn't argue.

She turned and sprinted again across the sand toward the alliance basket, still holding the object.

The crowd cheered even louder as she ran.

Behind her Peachy nudged Ghost.

"You almost lost your runner."

Ghost watched Ivy disappear toward the basket.

"Not happening."

Peachy grinned.

"Oh relax."

She kicked open another hidden compartment beside the rotating wall.

A metal cylinder dropped into the sand.

"Plenty more traps for you two lovebirds to fall into."

Ghost picked up the object and tossed it to Ethan.

"Less talking."

"More stealing."

Peachy laughed.

"Now that's the spirit."

And the team plunged back into the maze of obstacles.

Because the timer was still falling.

And the castle was still waiting.
