When the horn ended their run, the arena still roared behind them.
But by the time Ghost and his team reached the outer gates, the noise had begun to fade.
The adrenaline remained.
Mud covered their boots.
Sand clung to their clothes.
Peachy stretched her arms above her head while walking.
"Well, what do we do now?"
Ghost didn't answer.
He walked beside Ivy through the corridor leading back toward the camp.
For once the path was quiet.
Most of the players were still watching the next teams running the obstacle course.
Only the distant echo of the arena crowd followed them.
Ivy wiped some dirt from her hands as they walked.
"You did well," she said without looking at him.
Ghost raised an eyebrow.
"That sounded suspiciously like praise."
"It was."
Peachy turned around while walking backwards.
"Careful Ghost, she might start liking you."
Ghost smirked faintly.
"Too late."
Ivy rolled her eyes.
But the corner of her mouth lifted slightly.
They reached the alliance camp a few minutes later.
Tents stretched across the sand.
Equipment crates were stacked beside the fire pits.
Several teammates who hadn't participated in the run immediately rushed toward them.
"So?"
"How many?"
"Did you find anything good?"
Rex dropped onto one of the benches.
"Relax."
Peachy held up both hands dramatically.
"Ladies and gentlemen…"
She pointed toward the large metal chest sitting at the center of their camp.
"Our treasure."
Two players opened it.
Inside sat the objects they had collected.
Seventeen in total.
Different shapes.
Different materials.
Different purposes.
The entire team gathered around the crate.
Even Ghost leaned closer.
Peachy reached in first and lifted a small bronze key.
"What does this one do?"
One of the tech staff assigned to record the objects stepped forward with a tablet.
"That key can unlock secondary passage doors inside the castle."
Several players whistled.
"Nice."
Rex grabbed a metal cylinder next.
"And this?"
"Smoke release capsule."
Ghost nodded slightly.
"Escape tool."
The man continued.
"If triggered inside the castle it will release a smoke screen for thirty seconds."
Peachy grinned.
"Oh I like that one."
Another player lifted the strange black cube Peachy had discovered earlier.
The one marked with the castle symbol.
The staff member's eyebrows rose.
"That's rare."
Ghost crossed his arms.
"What does it do?"
"It controls one rotating wall section inside the castle."
Several teammates stared.
"You're kidding."
"No."
He tapped the cube lightly.
"If you activate it during the castle battle, the wall will stay locked in place."
Peachy laughed.
"That's evil."
Ghost smirked.
"Perfect."
One by one they examined the rest of the objects.
Keys.
Mechanical triggers.
Small devices meant to open shortcuts.
Others meant to block doors.
Each object was a piece of the maze waiting inside the castle.
When they finished, the team sat back around the fire pit.
For the first time that day…
everyone relaxed.
Peachy leaned against a crate.
"Honestly," she said, stretching her legs in front of her, "that might have been the most fun I've had getting covered in mud."
Rex laughed quietly.
"You call that fun?"
"You almost broke your neck on the rope tower."
Peachy shrugged.
"Worth it."
She glanced toward the open metal chest where their collected objects were resting.
Then she leaned forward slightly, resting her elbows on her knees.
"But we're not planning anything yet."
Several teammates looked at her.
Peachy pointed toward the arena lights in the distance.
"Once all the teams from our alliance that won the first trial finish running the second challenge, then we can start planning."
She tapped the edge of the crate.
"Or at least see who's carrying what."
Rex nodded slowly.
"That'll change everything."
Ghost glanced toward the chest again.
Because the objects inside weren't just trophies.
They were tools.
Weapons.
Shortcuts.
Traps.
And depending on which teams from their alliance brought back which items…
the entire strategy for the castle battle could change.
Peachy smirked slightly.
"Until then…"
She leaned back again.
"We wait."
The fire cracked softly beside them.
And in the distance, the arena lights still burned.
Because other teams were still running.
Still searching.
Still bringing back pieces of the castle battle that hadn't started yet.
"So."
She looked toward Ivy.
"What's the next nightmare you built?"
Ivy crossed her arms.
"You'll find out soon enough."
Ghost watched her quietly.
"You're enjoying this."
She tilted her head.
"Watching you figure things out?"
"Yes."
Ghost leaned back slightly.
"You realize you keep putting me in situations where I have to chase you."
Peachy made a noise behind them.
"Oh my god."
Rex laughed.
"Here we go."
Ivy ignored them.
"And you keep catching up."
Ghost's voice dropped slightly.
"That's because you leave trails."
She raised an eyebrow.
"Do I?"
"Always."
Peachy whispered loudly to Rex.
"This is painful."
Rex nodded.
"They're flirting again."
Ivy picked up a small metal key from the crate and turned it between her fingers.
"You think you understand the arena now."
Ghost shrugged.
"Enough."
She looked up at him.
"You're wrong."
Ghost smiled faintly.
"I know."
The fire crackled between them.
For a moment neither of them spoke.
Then Ivy finally said,
"There's one more trial."
The team immediately looked at her.
"Before the castle."
Peachy leaned forward.
"What kind?"
Ivy shook her head.
"That part stays secret."
Groans erupted around the fire.
"Oh come on."
"Seriously?"
Ghost studied her face.
"When?"
"When every team has finished the first two trials."
"So we wait."
"Yes."
Peachy stretched again.
"Well that's boring."
Rex leaned back.
"Rest while you can."
Ghost looked toward the arena in the distance.
Lights still flashed inside it.
More teams were running the course.
More objects being collected.
The competition was still far from over.
Ivy stood slowly.
"I need to check the control tower."
Peachy waved.
"Try not to build another trap that nearly kills you."
Ivy glanced toward Ghost.
"That one wasn't supposed to open."
Ghost smirked.
"Sure."
She started walking away.
Then stopped.
Turned slightly.
And looked at him.
"You're staring again."
Ghost didn't look away.
"You almost fell into your own trap."
"That happens."
He tilted his head slightly.
"Next time try not to fall."
Ivy smiled faintly.
"Next time try not to grab me."
Peachy nearly choked on her drink.
Ghost leaned forward slightly.
"That depends."
"On what?"
"How close you fall."
The tension between them lingered for a moment.
Then Ivy shook her head.
"You're impossible."
Ghost watched her walk away toward the control tower.
Peachy leaned toward him immediately.
"You're going to get both of you killed."
Ghost shrugged.
"Probably."
Rex laughed.
"But it'll be entertaining."
Ghost looked once more toward the arena lights in the distance.
Only one more trial remained.
And after that—
The castle would open.
And everything would change.
The fire crackled softly beside them.
And in the distance, the arena lights still burned.
Because other teams were still running.
Still searching.
Still bringing back pieces of the castle battle that hadn't started yet.
For a moment the camp stayed quiet.
Players talked softly.
Some checked the objects again.
Others simply rested.
But Ghost wasn't listening anymore.
His eyes had followed Ivy the moment she left the fire.
She moved across the camp toward the darker side of the compound, near the stacked equipment crates and the tall metal fence that separated the player area from the control structures.
She walked like she always did.
Calm.
Focused.
Like nothing around her ever rushed her.
Ghost stood slowly.
Peachy noticed immediately.
"Oh no."
Rex looked up.
"What?"
Peachy tilted her head toward Ghost.
"He's doing the thing."
Ghost ignored them and walked away from the fire.
Behind him Peachy muttered loudly enough for Rex to hear,
"This is going to be entertaining."
Ghost crossed the camp quickly.
Not running.
But purposeful.
Ivy had almost reached the darker edge of the compound when she sensed him behind her.
She stopped.
Without turning.
"You're follow me again."
Ghost stopped a few steps behind her.
"Yess"
"why."
"I don't want to feel this way about you… but I also don't want to go back to feeling nothing."
"You're acting like feeling something is the worst thing that could happen to you."
" it was"
Ghost stepped closer.
Now only a few feet separated them.
"Maybe I just didn't feel like watching you disappear."
Ivy finally turned.
The lights from the arena reflected faintly in her eyes.
"You're exaggerating."
Ghost took another step.
Now she was standing with her back almost against the tall metal crates stacked behind her.
"I don't exaggerate."
Ivy crossed her arms slowly.
"i dont go anywhere not now and not after."
Ghost leaned one hand against the crate beside her.
Blocking the path.
Not aggressively.
But deliberately.
"Correct."
"You kissed me."
"Also correct."
Ivy tilted her head slightly.
"You slapped my ass."
Ghost's mouth twitched.
"That was encouragement."
Ivy laughed softly under her breath.
"Encouragement."
"Yes."
For a moment neither of them moved.
The noise of the camp seemed distant here.
Muted.
All that existed was the small space between them.
Ivy studied his face.
"You do realize people can see you doing this."
Ghost didn't look away.
"I'm not doing anything."
"You cornered me."
"You stopped."
She raised an eyebrow.
"You followed."
"That too."
Ivy leaned back slightly against the crate.
"And what exactly are you planning to do now that you've caught me?"
Ghost stepped closer.
Close enough that she had to tilt her head slightly upward to hold his gaze.
"Depends."
"On what?"
"How stubborn you're feeling tonight."
Her eyes narrowed just a little.
"You're very confident."
Ghost's voice dropped slightly.
"You keep giving me reasons to be."
She shook her head slowly.
"You're impossible."
Ghost shrugged.
"And yet you keep designing arenas that force me to chase you."
"That's not why I built them."
"Sure."
Ivy's eyes flickered for a second.
"You think everything revolves around you."
"No."
Ghost leaned a little closer.
"But you keep putting me in situations where I end up right here."
His hand tapped the crate lightly beside her shoulder.
Cornered.
Not trapped.
But close.
Very close.
Ivy exhaled slowly.
"You're enjoying this."
"A little."
She studied him again.
"You realize the castle battle is going to be worse than today."
Ghost nodded.
"I'm counting on it."
"And you think you'll win."
"I usually do."
Her lips curved slightly.
"That sounds like a challenge."
Ghost tilted his head.
"I thought that's what you wanted."
The silence stretched again.
Heavy.
Charged.
Ivy didn't move away.
Didn't try to push past him.
But she also didn't give him the satisfaction of stepping closer.
Instead she spoke quietly.
"You're very sure of yourself."
Ghost's eyes didn't leave hers.
"No."
"No?"
"I'm sure of you."
That caught her off guard for half a second.
Just enough for Ghost to notice.
"You build traps," he continued quietly.
"Hidden doors."
"Moving walls."
"Mazes."
He leaned a little closer.
"But somehow you keep leaving me the path to you."
Ivy's heart clearly skipped that beat.
Even if she tried not to show it.
"You're imagining things."
Ghost smiled faintly.
"Am I?"
The space between them felt smaller now.
Warmer.
Ivy finally pushed lightly against his shoulder.
"Move."
Ghost didn't move.
"You have things to run."
"So do you."
"Control tower."
"Camp."
She looked at him again.
"You're enjoying blocking my way."
"A little."
Ivy sighed.
"You're impossible."
Ghost stepped back just enough to give her room.
But not enough to break the tension.
As she walked past him, she paused beside his shoulder.
Just long enough to say quietly,
"You're going to regret chasing me like this."
Ghost didn't turn.
His voice followed her instead.
"I doubt it."
She took two steps.
Then he added calmly,
"You run."
Ivy stopped.
"Sometimes."
Ghost's smile returned.
"I always catch up."
She looked back over her shoulder.
And for the first time that night…
she didn't look completely in control.
Then she walked away toward the control tower.
Back near the fire Peachy was watching everything.
The moment Ghost returned she grinned.
"Well?"
Ghost sat down again calmly.
"Well what."
Peachy leaned forward.
"You two are going to destroy each other before the castle even opens."
Ghost glanced toward the arena lights.
"Probably."
Rex laughed.
"That'll make the castle interesting."
Ghost leaned back slightly.
Because now the tension wasn't just in the arena.
It was everywhere.
And the castle battle hadn't even started yet.
