Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: Not Believing Her

"..."

The person on the other end of the line was speaking so loudly that even without the phone on speaker, Felix Preston heard every word clearly.

CLACK...

The chopsticks in Felix Preston's hand fell to the floor. His expression went blank.

Sonia Quincy was stunned for a moment, then quickly said, "Who is this? You must have the wrong number. What is all this nonsense you're spouting...? I'll sue you for slander!"

The woman on the other end, hearing this, let out a puzzled "Huh?" and then said, "I don't have the wrong number. This is Sonia Quincy's phone. Sonia, I had to pull a lot of strings to find that old man for you. What are you playing at now?"

"Who's playing at anything?" Sonia Quincy frowned, putting on a fierce act. "I don't care if you have the wrong number or if this is a phishing scam. Just shut your damn mouth. This is ridiculous... You psycho!"

After chewing the person out, Sonia Quincy decisively hung up and, for good measure, added the number to her blocklist.

"Spam call. Don't take it seriously," Sonia Quincy said with a small laugh, explaining to the stunned Felix Preston.

Felix Preston nodded. He didn't ask any questions and simply turned back to washing the dishes.

Sonia Quincy couldn't be of much help, so after wandering around the kitchen for a bit, she went to her room to freshen up. When she came out, she saw that Felix Preston had already made his bed on the sofa.

"A-are you going to sleep on the sofa?" Sonia Quincy asked, somewhat surprised.

Hearing this, Felix Preston looked at her with a very confused expression.

'This isn't the first time I've slept on the sofa. Why is she asking about it today?'

Sonia Quincy's eyes met his, and a few seconds later, she realized just how stupid her question was.

The "villainess" had originally agreed to marry Felix Preston purely for his money. After getting married, they had a tacit understanding to sleep in separate rooms. Later, when Felix Preston went bankrupt, sold the villa, and moved into this small, old, run-down one-bedroom apartment, the villainess had naturally banished him to the sofa while she took the bed.

'This whole situation is the villainess's handiwork, and here I am, wearing her face, with the gall to even ask.'

She pursed her lips in embarrassment and tried a different approach.

"You're already tired enough from working all day. Don't sleep on the sofa anymore. Come sleep in the room. The bed is huge; it's more than spacious enough for two people."

"There's no need." Felix Preston's refusal was immediate. "I'm used to sleeping here."

"You should get some rest. I'm going to take a shower."

With that, he went straight into the bathroom.

Sonia Quincy watched his back, sighing helplessly.

'He doesn't believe me, and he can't forgive me for what I've done. That's why, even though the sofa is uncomfortable, he's unwilling to come back to the room and share the bed with me.'

She didn't press the issue. Instead, she turned and took a thin blanket from the wardrobe, adding another layer to Felix Preston's "bed."

When Felix Preston came out, he immediately noticed the extra blanket. He froze for a second, then looked up toward the room across from him.

The bedroom door was open, and Sonia Quincy was sitting on the bed, staring into space.

He watched her for a moment, then suddenly spoke. "Sonia Quincy."

"Hm?" Sonia Quincy turned her head, looking lost. Her response was almost childlike.

Felix Preston: "Are you really willing to keep this child?"

Sonia Quincy smiled at him. "I am. I'm willing to have this baby, and I'm willing to be by your side with him."

"Thank you." Felix Preston's gratitude was sincere. "This child is my only hope in these desperate times. Thank you for being willing to keep him."

Sonia Quincy shook her head, not saying anything more.

Felix Preston said the child was his only hope. His *only* hope... He hadn't included the villainess in that. Then again, after everything she did to him, the fact he was still willing to support her was a testament to his incredible character.

Sonia Quincy sighed, pulling back the covers and slipping into the empty bed, ready to sleep.

Seeing this, Felix Preston moved to pull her bedroom door closed.

"Hey—don't close the door!" Sonia Quincy shot up in bed, stopping Felix Preston's movement.

Felix Preston looked at her, confused.

She clutched the blanket, her voice muffled. "I'm scared of the dark. I don't dare sleep alone. Can you leave the door open, so if I open my eyes, I can see you? Please?"

Felix Preston was silent for a few seconds, then nodded in agreement.

"Okay."

'The Sonia Quincy of today speaks gently and politely. I have no reason to refuse. Besides, she's not divorcing me anymore and has even personally promised to have the baby. Since she's willing to do all that, I should be able to accept these small requests.'

On her first night after transmigrating, Sonia Quincy slept fitfully. She tossed and turned all night, drifting in and out of sleep, only managing to fall into a deep slumber just before dawn.

She woke up again less than three hours later with a resentful sigh.

Mornings in the old, run-down apartment building were noisy. She had forgotten to close the window before bed last night, and the chirping chatter of people outside flooded in, making it impossible for her to go back to sleep even if she wanted to.

'Might as well get up and go grocery shopping.'

Felix Preston, exhausted from the previous day, was still asleep on the sofa. Sonia Quincy tiptoed out and slipped into the bathroom to wash up.

After she finished, she came out, rummaged through the wardrobe for a large-capacity bag, and slung it over her shoulder, ready to head out.

"Where are you going?" Felix Preston had been woken up after all. He wasn't fully awake yet, but her movements startled him, and he shot to his feet.

Sonia Quincy stood by the door and looked at him with a smile. "I'm going out to buy groceries and pick up some breakfast. It's still early, so you can sleep a little longer."

"You? Going grocery shopping?" Felix Preston was completely unable to connect Sonia Quincy with the act of "grocery shopping." He looked at the six-figure designer bag on her shoulder, and his mind instantly cleared.

"You're going to take *that* bag to go grocery shopping?"

"Yup," Sonia Quincy replied with a confident look. "This bag is big, so it can hold a lot of groceries. I picked it out specifically for that."

"Never mind, I'll go." Felix Preston got up from the sofa, picked up his glasses from the table, and placed them on the bridge of his high nose. "Your foot was cut by glass. You shouldn't be walking around too much."

"My foot is fine now." Sonia Quincy lifted her right foot and wiggled it at Felix Preston. "I took a look when I got up. The small cut has already scabbed over, and there's no noticeable pain when I walk. Going to the store is no problem at all."

"You go wash up. Don't worry about me. I'm leaving, bye-bye."

SLAM!

Sonia Quincy left decisively. The door was already shut before her last word had even finished echoing.

Felix Preston stared blankly at the closed door, deeply skeptical about Sonia Quincy's grocery run.

He would sooner believe that Sonia Quincy was using "grocery shopping" as an excuse to go do something else than believe she would actually go grocery shopping.

However, to his surprise, not only did Sonia Quincy actually go grocery shopping, but she had done a decent job of it.

After he finished washing up and came out of the bathroom, he put away the pillows and blanket from the sofa and stored them in the wardrobe. Just as he was about to head out himself, Sonia Quincy returned, carrying a large bag of groceries.

All sorts of vegetables and meat were packed inside her six-figure handbag.

"Time for breakfast," Sonia Quincy called out with a smile, her handbag in one hand and breakfast in the other.

Felix Preston came forward to help her with the bags, his eyes filled with astonishment. "You bought... all of this?"

"Yeah," Sonia Quincy replied naturally, as if it were the most ordinary thing in the world.

"Are you going out again today?" Sonia Quincy asked as she changed her shoes and came inside.

Felix Preston placed the breakfast on the table, untying the plastic bag as he answered, "Yes. I have a lot to do today, so I probably won't be home until tonight. Just eat when you're hungry and rest when you're tired. You don't need to wait for me."

Sonia Quincy: "Alright."

After breakfast, Felix Preston left with a stack of documents. At the entrance to the residential complex, a black Mercedes was parked by the roadside with its hazard lights flashing. Felix Preston walked over quickly and got into the car naturally.

"What? Sonia Quincy isn't divorcing you anymore? And she wants to have the baby and live a proper life with you?"

After hearing what Felix Preston had said, Evan Yates's eyes went wide with astonishment. He was driving, and he hastily glanced at Felix Preston in the rearview mirror, completely in disbelief.

"What's going on with Sonia Quincy? Did she suddenly change her mind?"

"Change her mind?" Felix Preston's handsome brows knitted together slightly, and the corner of his mouth lifted in a sarcastic smirk. "Do *you* believe that?"
