Nina Donovan fell silent. She had finally figured out why Jasper Sherwood had been in such a foul mood ever since they'd gotten in the car for Gretten Town.

Nina Donovan had never asked Misty about Jasper Sherwood's past, and Misty had never volunteered much information.
Looking at the house, scorched and ruined by fire, Nina Donovan began to piece things together. Jasper Sherwood had a sister and a grandmother, but she'd never once heard him mention his parents.
The topic of death was always a heavy one. Nina Donovan knew the feeling well.
Her lips parted and closed a few times before she finally managed a comforting word. "They're still here," she said. "They just became stars, and they're watching over you from the sky."
Jasper Sherwood watched her silently for three seconds, then couldn't help but let out a short laugh. "I never thought Miss Donovan knew how to comfort people."
