Chapter 49 - Chapter 8:Exams

Chapter 8 – Seven Days

---

[Scene: Kenta's Expanded Room - Sunday Night, Before Exams]

(The room is tense. Books everywhere. Sui is pale. Yui is muttering formulas. Akari sits calmly, reviewing notes. Kenta is at his desk, already finished.)

Sui: (head in hands) "Seven days of exams. SEVEN. I'm going to die."

Yui: (patting her back) "You've studied. You're ready."

Sui: "I'M NOT READY! I DON'T KNOW ANYTHING!"

Akari: (gently) "That's not true. You solved three practice problems perfectly today."

Sui: (looking up) "I did?"

Akari: "You did. And you'll do it again."

Kenta: (turning) "Exams are just problems. You've solved problems before."

Sui: "But these count!"

Kenta: "All problems count. You solve them one at a time."

Akari: (smiling at him) "That's a good way to think."

Sui: (taking a breath) "Okay. Okay. One problem at a time."

Yui: "That's the spirit!"

Akari: "Same time tomorrow? Final review before day one?"

Sui & Yui: (in unison) "YES!"

Akari: (looking at Kenta) "You'll be there?"

Kenta: "Always."

[Scene: Day 1 - Mathematics I (Calculus & Algebra)]

(The exam hall is silent. Rows of students. Pencils moving.)

Question 1: Find the derivative of f(x) = (x³ + 2x² - 5x + 7) · e^x

Solution: Using product rule: f'(x) = (3x² + 4x - 5)e^x + (x³ + 2x² - 5x + 7)e^x = e^x(x³ + 5x² - x + 2)

Question 2: Solve the system of equations:

2x + 3y - z = 10

x - 2y + 4z = -3

3x + y + 2z = 7

Solution: Using elimination or matrices, x = 2, y = 1, z = -1

Question 3: A particle moves along a line with velocity v(t) = 3t² - 12t + 9 m/s. Find the total distance traveled from t=0 to t=4.

Solution: Find when v(t)=0: 3(t² - 4t + 3)=0 → (t-1)(t-3)=0 → t=1,3.

Distance = ∫₀¹|v|dt + ∫₁³|v|dt + ∫₃⁴|v|dt = ∫₀¹(3t²-12t+9)dt + ∫₁³(-(3t²-12t+9))dt + ∫₃⁴(3t²-12t+9)dt = [t³-6t²+9t]₀¹ + [-(t³-6t²+9t)]₁³ + [t³-6t²+9t]₃⁴ = (4) + (4) + (4) = 12 meters

(After the exam, they gather outside.)

Sui: (groaning) "That was... actually okay?"

Yui: "Question 3 was tricky!"

Akari: "You just had to find when velocity changes sign."

Kenta: (nodding) "Piecewise integration."

Sui: (staring) "You two are speaking another language."

Akari: (giggling) "We'll explain later. One down, six to go."

---

[Scene: Day 2 - Physics]

Question 1: A block of mass 5 kg slides down a 30° incline with coefficient of friction μ = 0.2. Find acceleration and time to travel 10 m from rest.

Solution: a = g(sinθ - μ cosθ) = 9.8(0.5 - 0.2×0.866) = 9.8(0.5 - 0.1732) = 9.8×0.3268 = 3.20 m/s².

s = ½at² → 10 = ½(3.20)t² → t² = 6.25 → t = 2.5 s

Question 2: A projectile is launched at 40 m/s at 35°. Find range, max height, and time of flight.

Solution: v_x = 40 cos35° = 32.77 m/s, v_y = 40 sin35° = 22.94 m/s.

Time of flight T = 2v_y/g = 45.88/9.8 = 4.68 s.

Range R = v_x × T = 32.77 × 4.68 = 153.4 m.

Max height H = v_y²/2g = (22.94)²/19.6 = 526.2/19.6 = 26.85 m.

Question 3: Two charges, +3μC and -2μC, are 0.5 m apart. Find the electric field halfway between them.

Solution: Midpoint distance = 0.25 m from each.

E1 = k(3×10⁻⁶)/(0.25)² = 9×10⁹ × 3×10⁻⁶ / 0.0625 = 27×10³/0.0625 = 432×10³ N/C (away from + charge)

E2 = k(2×10⁻⁶)/(0.25)² = 9×10⁹ × 2×10⁻⁶ / 0.0625 = 18×10³/0.0625 = 288×10³ N/C (toward - charge)

Directions same → E_total = 432×10³ + 288×10³ = 720×10³ N/C = 7.2×10⁵ N/C toward the negative charge.

Sui: (after exam) "I think I passed? Maybe?"

Yui: "I definitely failed question 3."

Akari: "You didn't fail. You just need more practice."

Kenta: "Electrostatics is unintuitive. We'll review."

Sui: (leaning on Akari) "Thank god for you, Akari-chan."

Akari: (blushing) "It's nothing."

[Scene: Day 3 - Chemistry]

Question 1: Balance the redox reaction in acidic medium: MnO₄⁻ + Fe²⁺ → Mn²⁺ + Fe³⁺

Solution: Half-reactions:

Oxidation: Fe²⁺ → Fe³⁺ + e⁻

Reduction: MnO₄⁻ + 8H⁺ + 5e⁻ → Mn²⁺ + 4H₂O

Multiply oxidation by 5: 5Fe²⁺ → 5Fe³⁺ + 5e⁻

Add: MnO₄⁻ + 8H⁺ + 5Fe²⁺ → Mn²⁺ + 4H₂O + 5Fe³⁺

Question 2: Calculate the pH of a 0.1 M acetic acid solution (Ka = 1.8 × 10⁻⁵).

Solution: [H⁺] = √(Ka×C) = √(1.8×10⁻⁵ × 0.1) = √(1.8×10⁻⁶) = 1.34×10⁻³ M

pH = -log(1.34×10⁻³) = 2.87

Question 3: A first-order reaction has rate constant k = 0.05 s⁻¹. How long until 90% of reactant decomposes?

Solution: For 90% decomposition, 10% remains: [A]/[A]₀ = 0.10

ln([A]/[A]₀) = -kt → ln(0.10) = -0.05t

-2.3026 = -0.05t → t = 46.05 seconds

Sui: (walking out) "My brain is mush."

Yui: "Same."

Akari: "You did well. I saw your answers."

Sui: "You were watching?!"

Akari: (shyly) "I sit behind you. I noticed."

Kenta: (almost smiling) "She's always observing."

Akari: (looking at him) "So are you."

---

[Scene: Day 4 - English & Literature]

(Not math/science, but still required.)

Sui: "Essay! I can do essays!"

Yui: "Me too! Words are my friend!"

Akari: (quietly) "I like writing."

Kenta: "It's logical. Structure. Thesis. Evidence."

Sui: (laughing) "Only Kenta-kun would call an essay logical!"

(After the exam, they're all relieved.)

Akari: "Two more days. Then it's over."

Yui: "We're almost there!"

Sui: "I can see the light!"

[Scene: Day 5 - Mathematics II (Geometry & Trigonometry)]

Question 1: Prove that in any triangle ABC, a/sin A = b/sin B = c/sin C = 2R.

Solution: By constructing circumcircle radius R, chord a subtends angle 2A at center, so a = 2R sin A. Similarly b = 2R sin B, c = 2R sin C. Therefore a/sin A = b/sin B = c/sin C = 2R.

Question 2: Find all solutions to 2 sin² θ - sin θ - 1 = 0 for 0 ≤ θ < 2π.

Solution: Let u = sin θ: 2u² - u - 1 = 0 → (2u + 1)(u - 1) = 0 → u = 1 or u = -1/2

sin θ = 1 → θ = π/2

sin θ = -1/2 → θ = 7π/6, 11π/6

Solutions: θ = π/2, 7π/6, 11π/6

Question 3: A circle with center (3, -2) passes through (7, 1). Find equation and tangent line at that point.

Solution: Radius r = √[(7-3)² + (1+2)²] = √(16 + 9) = √25 = 5

Equation: (x-3)² + (y+2)² = 25

Slope of radius to point: m_rad = (1+2)/(7-3) = 3/4

Tangent slope m_tan = -4/3

Equation through (7,1): y - 1 = (-4/3)(x - 7) → 3y - 3 = -4x + 28 → 4x + 3y - 31 = 0

Sui: (after exam) "I actually understood that!"

Yui: "The sine one was hard!"

Akari: "But you got it?"

Yui: "I think so!"

Kenta: (nodding) "Progress."

---

[Scene: Day 6 - Biology]

(Not their strongest, but they managed.)

Question 1: Describe the process of mitosis and its phases.

Question 2: A DNA strand has sequence A-T-G-C-C-T-A. What is the complementary strand?

Solution: T-A-C-G-G-A-T

Question 3: Explain how natural selection leads to evolution.

Sui: "I just wrote 'survival of the fittest' and hoped for the best."

Yui: (laughing) "Same!"

Akari: (giggling) "That's... not wrong."

Kenta: "Simplistic, but not incorrect."

---

[Scene: Day 7 - Astronomy (Special Exam)]

(This is the exam Kenta has been waiting for. The room feels different. Star charts on the walls.)

Question 1: Using Kepler's Third Law, calculate the orbital period of Mars if its semi-major axis is 1.52 AU.

Solution: T² ∝ a³, so T²/T_earth² = (a/a_earth)³

T_earth = 1 year, a_earth = 1 AU

T² = (1.52)³ = 3.51

T = √3.51 = 1.87 Earth years

Question 2: A star has apparent magnitude m = 5.2 and absolute magnitude M = 2.1. Calculate its distance in parsecs.

Solution: m - M = 5 log d - 5

5.2 - 2.1 = 3.1 = 5 log d - 5

8.1 = 5 log d

log d = 1.62

d = 10^1.62 = 41.7 parsecs

Question 3: Derive the relationship between a star's luminosity, radius, and temperature using the Stefan-Boltzmann law.

Solution: L = 4πR²σT⁴

Therefore L ∝ R²T⁴

Question 4: The Hubble constant is approximately 70 km/s/Mpc. A galaxy is observed to have a redshift of z = 0.05. Estimate its distance using Hubble's Law.

Solution: v = z × c = 0.05 × 3×10⁵ km/s = 15,000 km/s

d = v/H₀ = 15,000 / 70 = 214 Mpc

Question 5: (Challenge) A binary star system consists of two stars with masses M₁ = 2M☉ and M₂ = 1M☉, separated by 0.5 AU. Calculate their orbital period.

Solution: Using Newton's form of Kepler's Law: T² = (4π²/G(M₁+M₂)) a³

Total mass = 3M☉ = 3 × 1.99×10³⁰ kg = 5.97×10³⁰ kg

a = 0.5 AU = 0.5 × 1.496×10¹¹ m = 7.48×10¹⁰ m

G = 6.67×10⁻¹¹

T² = (4π²/ (6.67×10⁻¹¹ × 5.97×10³⁰)) × (7.48×10¹⁰)³

T² = (39.48 / 3.98×10²⁰) × 4.19×10³²

T² = (9.92×10⁻²⁰) × 4.19×10³² = 4.16×10¹³

T = 6.45×10⁶ seconds

Convert to years: 6.45×10⁶ / (365×24×3600) = 6.45×10⁶ / 3.15×10⁷ = 0.205 years ≈ 74.8 days

Akari: (walking out, eyes wide) "That was... beautiful."

Kenta: (nodding) "Good questions."

Sui: "I took regular science. You two are insane."

Yui: "Astronomy Kenta and Akari!"

Akari: (blushing) "I just like stars."

Kenta: "Me too."

---

[Scene: After All Exams - Celebration Begins]

Sui: (collapsing on a bench) "IT'S OVER! WE'RE FREE!"

Yui: (joining) "FREEDOM!"

Akari: (sitting quietly) "Seven days. We made it."

Kenta: (beside her) "You did well."

Akari: "So did you."

Takahashi Kenji: (appearing) "CELEBRATION! AGAIN! MY PLACE! TONIGHT!"

Sui: "YES!"

Yui: "COUNT US IN!"

Akari: (hesitating) "I... I have something I need to do tonight."

Sui: (concerned) "What? Everything okay?"

Akari: (nodding) "Just... something personal. I'll join next time, promise."

Kenta: (watching her closely) "Do you want company?"

Akari: (pause) "Maybe... just you?"

---

[Scene: Evening - A Quiet Cemetery]

(Kenta and Akari walk through a small cemetery on the outskirts of town. Snow covers the ground. Akari stops at a simple grave.)

Akari: (quietly) "My father."

Kenta: (reading the name) "Tachibana Kenji."

Akari: "Same name as you. Kenji. Different kanji."

Kenta: (softly) "I know."

Akari: (kneeling) "I haven't been here since the funeral. Couldn't face it."

Kenta: (kneeling beside her) "Why today?"

Akari: "Because exams are over. Because I have friends now. Because... I'm ready."

(She places a small flower on the grave.)

Akari: "He died protecting me. We ran for years. Then one night... they found us."

Kenta: (listening)

Akari: "He told me to run. Don't look back. I heard... I heard..."

(Her voice breaks.)

Kenta: (gently) "You don't have to tell me."

Akari: (wiping tears) "I want to. You deserve to know."

(She takes a breath.)

Akari: "They caught him. Beat him. I hid and watched. He never screamed. Never gave me away. He just... looked toward where I was hiding. Smiled. And then..."

(She can't finish.)

Kenta: (placing a hand on her shoulder) "He loved you. More than his own life."

Akari: (sobbing) "I know. That's why it hurts."

Kenta: (quietly) "My father died when I was twelve. Not like yours. But I know loss."

Akari: (looking at him) "How do you bear it?"

Kenta: "I remember. I honor. And I live. For him."

Akari: (nodding) "For him."

(They kneel together. Silent. Respecting.)

Akari: (after a long moment) "Thank you for coming with me."

Kenta: "Thank you for letting me."

Akari: (standing) "I'm ready to go now."

---

[Scene: Walking Home - Under the Stars]

(They walk slowly. Hands brushing occasionally.)

Akari: "Kenta-kun... your father's astrolabe. Can I see it again sometime?"

Kenta: "Whenever you want."

Akari: "I'd like that. To touch something that saved my life."

Kenta: "It's more than a tool. It's a piece of him."

Akari: (smiling softly) "You're a piece of him too."

Kenta: (looking at her) "So are you. In a way."

Akari: (confused) "Me?"

Kenta: "He tried to save you. In a way, you're part of his legacy too."

Akari: (tearing up again) "Kenta-kun..."

Kenta: "Don't cry."

Akari: "Happy tears. I'm allowed."

Kenta: (almost smiling) "Okay."

(They reach her building.)

Akari: "Thank you. For today. For everything."

Kenta: "Always."

Akari: (rising on tiptoes) "For listening."

(She kisses his cheek. Then another. Then a third.)

Akari: "One for my father. One for yours. One for us."

Kenta: (touching his cheek) "I'll remember."

Akari: "Goodnight, Kenta-kun."

Kenta: "Goodnight, Akari."

(She disappears inside. He stands there. Touching his cheek. Looking at the stars.)

Kenta: (whispering) "Father... I think I understand now. Why you tried so hard."

---

[Scene: Kenta's Room - Night]

(He sits at his desk. Thirty-five items now. He adds a small stone from the cemetery.)

Kenta: (looking at them) "Thirty-five."

(He touches his locket. Their photos inside. Three. And now a fourth, in a different way.)

Kenta: (thinking) "Father... I'll take care of her. For you."

(He picks up the astrolabe.)

Kenta: "I promise."

(The astrolabe gleams.)

---

[Scene: Bedtime - Three Together]

(Sui and Yui are already home, waiting.)

Sui: "Kenta-kun! How was Akari-chan?"

Kenta: (sitting on the bed) "She showed me her father's grave."

Yui: (softening) "Oh."

Sui: (hugging him) "Is she okay?"

Kenta: "She will be. She has us now."

Yui: (hugging too) "All of us."

Sui: (kissing his cheek) "For Akari."

Yui: (kissing his other cheek) "For her father."

Kenta: (kissing both) "For all of us."

(They sleep. Three together. But the fourth is in their hearts.)

Kenta: (thinking, last thought) "Akari. You're not alone. None of us are."
