Chapter 37 - Chapter 37 – The Cost of Attachment

The fog around the mountain temple had not lifted.

Neither had the tension.

The Message Changes Everything

Shen Lian stood motionless after the messenger vanished.

Too still.

Too controlled.

Which meant one thing:

Something was wrong.

Li Xuan watched him carefully.

"The network knows about me."

Not a question.

Shen Lian finally answered.

"Yes."

Silence settled heavily between them.

Because both of them understood what that meant.

The Rules of the Network

"They don't tolerate attachment," Shen Lian said quietly.

Li Xuan's expression hardened slightly.

"And what happens when someone breaks the rules?"

Shen Lian didn't respond immediately.

Which was answer enough.

Flash – The Past Returns Sharper

A courtyard stained red.

A body collapsing forward.

A younger Shen Lian frozen in place.

"Look carefully," the handler had said coldly.

"This is what hesitation becomes."

The sound of steel.

Then silence.

Back to the Present

Li Xuan notices the shift in his breathing immediately.

Again.

Always.

"You're thinking about them."

Shen Lian's jaw tightens slightly beneath the veil.

"Yes."

"The person who died."

A dangerous pause.

Then—

"…Yes."

Li Xuan Steps Closer

"You loved them?"

The question is quiet.

Not jealous.

Not angry.

Just real.

Shen Lian closes his eyes briefly.

"No."

A pause.

"…But they were the closest thing I had to safety."

That lands harder somehow.

The Fear Becomes Clear

"They died because they hesitated," Shen Lian says quietly.

"Because they cared."

His voice lowers further.

"And now I understand why."

Silence.

Li Xuan's gaze sharpens instantly.

Because that wasn't just memory anymore.

That was confession.

Li Xuan Refuses the Logic

"So your solution is what?"

"To disappear."

"No."

Immediate.

Certain.

Shen Lian exhales softly, almost tired now.

"You keep saying that like your refusal changes reality."

"It changes yours."

That silence after—

dangerous.

Intimate.

Cut To — Advisor Chen

Inside the capital, Advisor Chen stands beneath the palace corridor shadows.

Watching.

Waiting.

Below him, Li Xuan's personal guards prepare fresh horses.

Travel supplies.

Movement patterns.

Chen notices everything.

Too much.

One of the servants bows slightly.

"Your suspicion was correct. The Fourth Prince left the palace during the storm."

Chen's expression remains calm.

But his eyes sharpen.

"And he returned?"

"…Not yet."

That matters.

A lot.

The Investigation Evolves

Chen no longer believes this is random involvement.

No.

This is attachment.

Which means:

The mysterious veiled figure now has leverage over a prince.

And leverage creates weakness.

Back at the Temple

The air shifts suddenly.

Shen Lian notices first.

Then Li Xuan hears it.

Footsteps.

Multiple.

Not hiding themselves.

The Network Arrives

Three masked figures emerge slowly through the fog.

Silent.

Elegant.

Dangerous.

Unlike palace guards—

these people move like trained killers.

No wasted motion.

No fear.

Only purpose.

Immediate Threat

The figure in the center speaks first.

"You were ordered not to return."

Shen Lian's posture changes instantly.

Colder.

Sharper.

Like another version of him surfaced.

"I handled the mission."

"You compromised it."

A pause.

Then—

their gaze shifts toward Li Xuan.

And the atmosphere becomes lethal.

The First Open Threat

"So this is the reason."

Li Xuan steps slightly forward.

Not intimidated.

Bad idea.

One of the assassins immediately reaches for a blade.

Fast.

Shen Lian moves even faster.

His fan snaps open between them with a sharp metallic sound.

"Don't."

One word.

Cold enough to freeze the air.

Everything Stops

The assassins stare at him.

Not shocked he protected Li Xuan.

Shocked he did it openly.

That is worse.

Much worse.

The Truth No Longer Hidden

The leader tilts their head slightly.

"…You've become attached."

Silence.

No denial comes.

And that silence confirms everything.

Li Xuan Understands the Real Danger

Not the palace.

Not Advisor Chen.

This.

A system that kills emotional weakness before it spreads.

And Shen Lian is standing directly against it now.

The Ultimatum

"You will return," the leader says calmly.

"Alone."

The meaning underneath is obvious:

👉 Leave Li Xuan behind

👉 Or become a target yourself

Shen Lian's First Real Choice

For the first time—

he hesitates.

Not in battle.

Not because of fear.

Because of him.

And the network notices immediately.

A fatal mistake.

Li Xuan Interferes

"He's not going anywhere."

The assassins' attention shifts sharply toward him.

The tension explodes instantly.

Shen Lian's voice cuts through it hard:

"Stop talking."

But Li Xuan doesn't move.

Doesn't retreat.

Doesn't break eye contact.

The Emotional Breaking Point Builds

"You said attachment gets people killed," Li Xuan says quietly.

Shen Lian freezes.

Li Xuan steps closer anyway.

"Then maybe your problem is that you keep surviving alone."

That lands deeper than any blade could.

For the first time in the entire story—

Shen Lian visibly loses composure.

Just slightly.

But enough.

Enough for the network to see it.

And enough to terrify him.

End Scene

The fog thickens around the ruined temple.

The assassins stand waiting.

Li Xuan refuses to back down.

And Shen Lian realizes the truth too late:

He is no longer protecting Li Xuan from danger.

Li Xuan has become the danger—

to the life Shen Lian was trained to obey.
