Chapter 43 - Chapter 43 – The Possessive Game

Night settled over the city like a velvet curtain.

Ethan arrived at Lena's building just after eight. The tower rose above the street like a monument to quiet power—glass, steel, and silence. Inside, the lobby lights reflected off polished marble floors, and the receptionist barely glanced up when he stepped in.

She already knew who he was.

That alone told Ethan how much influence Lena had.

By the time the elevator doors opened on the top floor, Ethan had already run through six possible outcomes in his head.

None of them were comfortable.

The apartment door was slightly open.

"Come in," Lena's voice drifted out.

Ethan stepped inside.

Soft lighting filled the large room, casting warm shadows across expensive furniture. Lena stood near the window, a glass of wine in her hand.

She wore a black dress—simple, elegant, but impossible to ignore. The fabric traced her figure in a way that made it clear she had chosen it carefully.

Not for a meeting.

For him.

"You're late," she said without turning.

"It's been twenty minutes."

"Twenty-three."

She finally looked at him, her lips curving slightly.

"You're getting careless."

Ethan stepped further into the room.

"You said we needed to talk."

"We do."

Lena placed the wine glass on the table and walked toward him slowly.

Her heels clicked softly against the floor.

"You've been busy," she said.

"Business tends to do that."

"With Cara."

The name hung in the air.

Ethan didn't react immediately.

"You're watching too closely."

"I'm protecting what's mine."

That word again.

Mine.

Lena stopped in front of him, studying his face.

"You don't like that, do you?" she asked softly.

"I don't belong to anyone."

Her smile deepened.

"That's exactly why I like you."

For a moment neither of them spoke.

Then Lena reached past him and placed a thick envelope on the table behind him.

"Your licenses," she said.

Ethan glanced at it.

"That was fast."

"I told you," she replied lightly, "I can move things quickly when I want to."

He opened the envelope.

Inside were several documents with official stamps and approvals.

Permits.

Operating rights.

Access codes.

Things that normally took months… or connections far above Ethan's current level.

"You've just unlocked three new markets for me," Ethan said.

"I know."

Her voice was quiet but satisfied.

"That's why I did it."

Ethan closed the envelope slowly.

"What do you want?"

Lena stepped closer.

"You ask that every time."

"Because the answer changes."

She tilted her head slightly.

"Tonight?"

Her fingers brushed lightly against his sleeve.

"I want your attention."

Ethan didn't move.

"And if I'm busy?"

Her eyes hardened just a little.

"You won't be."

The room fell silent.

Lena walked past him toward the window again.

"Do you know why powerful men fall?" she asked.

"Overconfidence."

"No."

She turned.

"Distractions."

Her gaze locked onto his.

"Women they underestimate."

Ethan folded his arms.

"You think I underestimate you?"

"I think you thought this was temporary."

Her smile returned.

"It's not."

Ethan felt the truth of that statement settle in the back of his mind.

When he first met Lena, she had been a shortcut.

Now she was a variable he couldn't easily remove.

"You're trying to trap me," he said calmly.

She laughed softly.

"Ethan, if I wanted to trap you… it would already be done."

Her tone turned softer.

"But I prefer something else."

"Which is?"

"Loyalty."

Ethan shook his head slightly.

"You're asking the wrong person."

"Am I?"

She stepped closer again, close enough that her voice dropped to a whisper.

"You're building an empire."

"Yes."

"You're surrounding yourself with powerful allies."

"Yes."

"And yet…"

Her fingers lightly touched his wrist.

"…you keep coming back here."

Ethan didn't answer.

Because she was right.

And Lena knew it.

She leaned back slightly, satisfied.

"Relax," she said lightly.

"I'm not your enemy."

"That depends."

"On what?"

"On how far you push."

Lena smiled again.

"Oh Ethan…"

She picked up her wine glass.

"You have no idea how far I'm willing to go."

Later That Night

Ethan left the building an hour later.

The cool night air helped clear his thoughts.

But not enough.

Because his phone buzzed the moment he stepped into his car.

Cara

"Are you free tomorrow? I want to see you."

Another message followed.

"It's important."

Ethan leaned back in the seat.

Across the city, three different paths were pulling at him.

Cara.

Aria.

Lena.

Each one meant something different.

And each one could destroy the balance he was trying to maintain.

He started the engine.

But before he drove away—

another notification appeared.

Aria

"We need to talk tomorrow morning."

Ethan stared at the screen.

For the first time in months…

his perfectly controlled life was starting to crack.

In another part of the city, Lena sat alone on her couch, scrolling through a news article about Ethan's latest investment.

Her fingers paused on a photo.

Ethan.

Cara.

Standing close together at a charity event.

Lena's expression slowly changed.

"Cute," she murmured.

Then she locked the phone and smiled to herself.

"Let's see how long that lasts."
