Chapter 44 - Chapter 44 – The First Crack

Morning arrived too quickly.

Ethan barely slept.

His mind had spent most of the night replaying conversations, calculating outcomes, and adjusting strategies. The empire he was building demanded constant precision—but lately the battlefield wasn't just business.

It was personal.

By the time he reached the office tower, the city was already alive. Traffic crawled through the streets below, and the early sunlight reflected sharply off rows of glass buildings.

Inside Ethan's headquarters, the atmosphere was different.

Quiet.

Controlled.

Employees moved with efficiency, voices low, footsteps measured. Even though many of them were older and more experienced, something about Ethan's presence forced them to straighten their posture whenever he walked past.

Respect.

Or fear.

Sometimes both.

When Ethan entered his office, he immediately noticed someone waiting.

Aria.

She stood beside the large window overlooking the skyline, a tablet in her hand. Today she wore a fitted charcoal skirt and a cream blouse beneath a tailored jacket. The clean lines of her clothing matched the sharp precision of her personality.

Her hair was tied back neatly, emphasizing her calm but intense gaze.

"You're late," she said without turning.

Ethan closed the door behind him.

"By two minutes."

"That's late for you."

He placed his briefcase on the desk.

"You wanted to talk."

Aria finally turned toward him.

For a moment she simply studied his face.

"You didn't sleep much."

"Work."

"Lena."

The name landed like a stone dropped in still water.

Ethan froze for half a second.

Most people would have missed it.

Aria didn't.

Her eyes narrowed slightly.

"So it is her."

Ethan walked to the desk slowly.

"You've been investigating."

"Observing."

Aria stepped closer.

"She's been meeting you at night. She's involved in the licensing approvals for your expansion projects."

Her voice remained calm.

Too calm.

"And she's not the type of woman who helps someone without expecting something in return."

Ethan didn't answer.

Aria's gaze sharpened.

"How deep are you in?"

"That depends on what you think."

"I think," she said quietly, "that you're playing with someone dangerous."

Ethan leaned back against the desk.

"Dangerous people are useful."

"Not when they start controlling the board."

Silence settled between them.

The tension was thick enough to cut.

Finally Ethan spoke.

"You're worried."

"Yes."

"About the business?"

Aria hesitated.

That hesitation alone said more than words.

"Partly," she admitted.

Ethan studied her carefully.

There was something new in her expression today.

Not just concern.

Something closer to jealousy.

Before he could respond, the office door suddenly opened.

Cara stepped inside.

Bright energy filled the room instantly.

She wore a light blue dress under a cream coat, her long hair falling loosely over her shoulders. Compared to Aria's precise elegance, Cara carried a softer, more effortless beauty.

But her eyes immediately moved between them.

Ethan.

Aria.

The tension in the room.

"Wow," Cara said slowly.

"Did I interrupt a business meeting… or something else?"

Aria stepped back slightly.

"Nothing important."

Cara raised an eyebrow.

"It didn't look like nothing."

Ethan pushed off the desk.

"What brings you here?"

Cara walked closer.

"You."

Her eyes lingered on Aria for a moment.

"Is that a problem?"

"No," Aria replied calmly.

"But we were discussing something."

Cara smiled politely.

"I'm sure you were."

The words sounded friendly.

But the air between the two women suddenly felt colder.

Ethan noticed it immediately.

Jealousy.

Competition.

Exactly the kind of emotional variables he usually avoided.

Cara turned back to him.

"Can we talk privately?"

Ethan nodded.

Aria gave a small nod and moved toward the door.

But as she passed Ethan, she spoke quietly enough that only he could hear.

"Be careful."

Then she left.

The door closed behind her.

Cara watched the door for a moment before turning back.

"She's protective of you."

"She's a partner."

Cara tilted her head.

"Just a partner?"

Ethan didn't answer.

Cara walked slowly around the office, looking at the city view.

"You've built something impressive here."

"Still building."

She turned suddenly.

"Then why does it feel like you're hiding something?"

Ethan stayed silent.

Cara crossed her arms.

"You've been distant lately."

"Busy."

"Ethan."

Her voice softened slightly.

"That's not what I mean."

He met her gaze.

"What do you mean?"

Cara hesitated.

Then she said something he hadn't expected.

"I think someone else is involved."

The room went quiet.

Ethan's mind instantly ran through possible explanations, strategies, deflections.

But before he could speak—

Cara continued.

"I don't know who she is."

Her eyes searched his face carefully.

"But I can feel it."

Ethan remained perfectly still.

Cara sighed.

"You know what the worst part is?"

"What?"

"I don't even know if I'm jealous… or just disappointed."

The words hit harder than he expected.

For a moment neither of them spoke.

Then Cara forced a small smile.

"Anyway."

She stepped toward the door.

"I didn't come here to fight."

She paused.

"But Ethan…"

Her voice softened again.

"If someone is trying to control you…"

Her eyes flicked briefly toward the desk where the licensing documents sat.

"…don't let them."

Then she left.

The door closed quietly behind her.

Ethan stood alone in the office.

Three women.

Three different warnings.

And three different directions pulling his life apart.

Outside the window, the city stretched endlessly toward the horizon.

But for the first time since he started building his empire—

Ethan felt something unfamiliar.

He was losing control.

End of Chapter 44 Hook

Across the city, Lena sat inside a private lounge, watching a live financial news broadcast.

On the screen—

Ethan's company logo appeared.

The reporter's voice echoed:

"Sources say the young entrepreneur behind this rising corporation is preparing to expand internationally…"

Lena smiled slowly.

"Oh Ethan…"

She lifted her wine glass.

"…you're becoming far too interesting to share."
