Chapter 19 - The Man Who Shouldn’t Exist

The palace did not sleep that night.

Even after the destruction stopped.

Even after the enemies vanished.

Something had changed.

Everyone felt it.

---

Aria stood alone on the upper terrace.

The wind was quiet again.

But she didn't trust it anymore.

Her hand rested lightly against the stone railing.

Below, soldiers moved in controlled patterns.

Guards.

Barriers.

Precautions.

Too many.

---

"They're afraid of you now."

The voice came from behind.

Aria didn't turn.

"I know."

Selene stepped beside her, looking out over the palace grounds.

"You handled it well."

"That wasn't control."

Selene smiled faintly.

"No."

"It wasn't."

---

A brief silence passed.

Then—

"Someone is coming."

Aria's eyes narrowed slightly.

"I can feel that."

Selene's expression shifted.

"You shouldn't be able to."

---

Footsteps echoed behind them.

Steady.

Unhurried.

Confident.

Kael appeared first.

But he wasn't alone.

And that—

That was the problem.

---

The man standing beside him didn't look dangerous.

That was the first thing wrong.

He wore no armor.

No weapon.

No royal insignia.

Just a long dark coat.

Simple.

Unremarkable.

But the moment he stepped onto the terrace—

The air changed.

Not violently.

Not like Aria.

This was quieter.

Heavier.

Like pressure without movement.

---

Selene straightened instantly.

Her entire posture shifted.

Respect.

Alertness.

Caution.

All at once.

"Well," she murmured softly.

"That explains it."

---

Kael stopped a few steps away.

His expression was controlled.

But not relaxed.

"Aria."

She turned slightly.

Then her gaze shifted—

To the man beside him.

And for the first time since the garden—

Her instincts reacted before her mind did.

Danger.

---

The man studied her calmly.

Not like a soldier.

Not like an enemy.

Like someone reading a book he already understood.

"You're unstable."

The words were simple.

Direct.

No emotion.

---

Aria's eyes sharpened.

"And you're rude."

Selene almost smiled.

Almost.

---

Kael exhaled quietly.

"This is—"

"I know who he is," Selene cut in.

Kael paused.

"You do?"

Selene didn't look away from the man.

"Everyone who knows anything… knows."

---

Aria glanced between them.

"That's helpful."

Selene's voice dropped slightly.

"Imperial Execution Division."

A pause.

"Highest authority below the throne."

---

Aria felt the shift immediately.

This wasn't just another soldier.

This was someone the empire sent when things were already out of control.

---

The man spoke again.

"Name."

Aria didn't answer.

Not immediately.

Selene tilted her head.

"That's how you're starting?"

The man ignored her.

His eyes remained on Aria.

"Name."

---

Aria held his gaze.

"Aria Valen."

A brief silence followed.

Then—

"Irrelevant."

---

That was enough.

The wind around Aria moved sharply.

A warning.

---

Kael stepped forward slightly.

"Stop."

The man didn't react.

"Designation matters more than identity."

Aria's voice turned colder.

"And what designation did you give me?"

---

The man's answer came without hesitation.

"Uncontained anomaly."

---

The air tightened.

Selene sighed softly.

"Not helping."

---

Kael's tone hardened.

"She is under my authority."

The man finally looked at him.

For a moment.

Only a moment.

But it was enough to make something clear.

He didn't care.

---

"Your authority is temporary."

Kael didn't move.

"Explain."

---

The man turned back to Aria.

"Your existence has triggered multiple restricted protocols."

Selene crossed her arms.

"I'm guessing that's not good."

"No."

---

Aria stepped forward slightly.

"Then say it clearly."

---

A pause.

Then—

"You are no longer considered an internal matter."

---

Silence.

---

Kael's expression darkened.

"What does that mean?"

---

The man answered calmly.

"It means the empire has escalated."

---

Selene exhaled slowly.

"Of course it has."

---

Aria didn't look away.

"Escalated to what?"

---

For the first time—

Something changed in the man's expression.

Not emotion.

Recognition.

---

"To me."

---

The wind stopped completely.

Not weakened.

Stopped.

Like something had overridden it.

---

Aria felt it instantly.

Her power—

Paused.

---

That had never happened before.

---

Selene's voice dropped.

"…Oh."

---

Kael stepped forward again.

"What did you just do?"

---

The man didn't answer.

Because his attention was still on Aria.

---

"Storm manipulation."

A pause.

"Shadow emergence."

Another pause.

Then—

"Both incomplete."

---

Aria's heart rate increased slightly.

"You don't know anything about me."

---

He tilted his head slightly.

"Incorrect."

---

And then he said something that changed everything.

---

"I know what you become."

---

Silence.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

---

Selene's eyes narrowed.

"That's not information the empire should have."

---

The man didn't look at her.

"Not the empire."

---

Aria's voice dropped.

"Then who?"

---

A pause.

Just long enough to matter.

---

Then—

"You will find out."

---

He turned.

Like the conversation was already over.

---

Kael stepped forward.

"You're not leaving."

---

The man stopped.

But didn't turn back.

---

"You cannot stop what has already started."

---

And then—

He walked away.

---

No guards followed him.

No orders were given.

And yet—

No one stopped him.

---

The moment he disappeared—

The wind returned.

Suddenly.

Unstable.

---

Aria grabbed the railing slightly.

Her control flickering again.

---

Selene stepped closer immediately.

"That's bad."

---

Kael looked toward the exit.

"Who was that?"

---

Selene answered quietly.

"The empire's last resort."

A pause.

"The one they send when something isn't meant to survive."

---

Aria looked down at her shadow again.

It moved slightly.

On its own.

---

And for the first time—

Fear wasn't directed at the empire.

N

It was directed at herself.

Because if even the empire's strongest weapon couldn't be explained—

Then what Aria was becoming…

Was something far worse.
