Night had fallen over the city.
The Hale Foundation Gala was already in full swing.
The grand ballroom of the Royal Meridian Hotel glittered with golden chandeliers and polished marble floors. Wealthy businessmen, politicians, celebrities, and powerful figures moved through the hall like pieces on a chessboard.
Soft classical music played in the background.
Champagne glasses clinked.
Polite laughter filled the air.
But beneath the elegance, there was tension.
Tonight wasn't just a charity gala.
Tonight was a power display.
And everyone knew it.
At the entrance of the ballroom, security guards stood tall as another black luxury car stopped outside.
The driver opened the door.
First, Alessandro Romano stepped out.
His dark suit was perfectly tailored, his posture calm and confident. The moment he appeared, several people near the entrance whispered among themselves.
"The Romano heir…"
"He actually came."
Alessandro ignored them.
Then Elena stepped out of the car.
And the whispers suddenly stopped.
Her dress was breathtaking.
Deep crimson silk flowed elegantly to the floor, hugging her form perfectly while remaining sophisticated and graceful. The color contrasted beautifully with her skin and dark hair.
The necklace Alessandro had chosen shimmered softly under the lights.
For a moment, even the photographers forgot to speak.
Then the cameras started flashing.
"Elena Romano!"
"Look this way!"
"Mrs. Romano!"
Elena blinked at the sudden attention.
"Wow."
She leaned slightly toward Alessandro.
"Your enemy throws a very fancy trap."
Alessandro's voice was calm.
"Stay close."
They walked inside together.
The ballroom quieted just enough for people to notice.
Eyes turned.
Conversations paused.
The Romano couple had arrived.
Across the room, Adrian stood near a table with several business partners. When he saw them enter, he gave a small approving nod.
"She'll survive," he muttered.
Meanwhile, whispers spread through the crowd.
"That's his wife?"
"She's beautiful."
"Where did she come from?"
"Romano married her suddenly, didn't he?"
Curiosity filled the air.
But none of that mattered to Elena.
Because she felt something else.
Someone was watching her.
Closely.
Her eyes scanned the room slowly.
And then she saw him.
Victor Hale.
He stood near the center of the ballroom, surrounded by several powerful guests.
Tall.
Elegant.
Perfectly composed.
His midnight-blue tuxedo looked almost regal under the golden lights.
But it was his eyes that caught her attention.
Sharp.
Intelligent.
Observant.
He was studying her like a scientist studying a rare specimen.
Elena leaned slightly toward Alessandro.
"Found him."
Alessandro followed her gaze.
Their eyes met Victor's across the room.
For a moment, the entire ballroom seemed to disappear.
Three people.
Three minds calculating.
Victor smiled first.
Not a warm smile.
A knowing one.
Then he began walking toward them.
The crowd parted naturally, like the sea making way for a ship.
Elena kept her expression calm.
But her heart beat slightly faster.
Victor stopped a few steps away.
Up close, he looked even more composed.
His voice was smooth.
"Alessandro Romano."
Alessandro nodded slightly.
"Victor Hale."
The tension between them was invisible but powerful.
Years of rivalry hung in the air.
Victor's eyes shifted to Elena.
"And this must be Mrs. Romano."
He extended his hand politely.
"Elena."
She shook his hand.
His grip was firm but controlled.
"Victor."
For a moment, he simply looked at her.
Studying.
Analyzing.
Then he smiled slightly.
"I must say… Alessandro always had excellent taste."
Elena raised an eyebrow.
"Are you complimenting me… or insulting him?"
Victor chuckled softly.
"I suppose that depends on how you interpret it."
Alessandro's voice cut in calmly.
"Get to the point."
Victor looked amused.
"Still impatient."
He gestured around the ballroom.
"Tonight is simply a celebration."
Alessandro didn't react.
Victor continued.
"My foundation raises money for international relief programs."
Elena crossed her arms lightly.
"And inviting your biggest rival helps charity?"
Victor smiled again.
"You'd be surprised how generous people become when powerful men share a room."
She had to admit…
That made sense.
Victor studied her again.
"You're very different from what I expected."
Elena tilted her head.
"Oh?"
"Yes."
"I expected someone quieter."
She smiled faintly.
"Disappointing?"
"Interesting."
Victor glanced back at Alessandro briefly.
"You chose well."
Alessandro remained expressionless.
Victor looked back at Elena.
"I hope the evening isn't too overwhelming."
Elena shrugged.
"I've had stranger weeks."
Victor laughed softly.
"I believe that."
A waiter passed by with champagne.
Victor took a glass and handed one to Elena.
Then one to Alessandro.
"To new beginnings," he said calmly.
Alessandro didn't raise his glass.
Victor didn't seem offended.
Instead, he leaned slightly closer to Elena.
Lowering his voice just enough.
"You know…"
His tone became almost thoughtful.
"People often underestimate how important the right partner can be."
Elena met his gaze calmly.
"And what do you think my role is?"
Victor's eyes gleamed slightly.
"That's what I'm trying to discover."
Alessandro stepped forward slightly.
Just enough to place himself closer to Elena.
Victor noticed immediately.
His smile widened slightly.
"Well then."
He stepped back.
"I'll let you enjoy the evening."
Before leaving, he added one final sentence.
"Oh… and Alessandro?"
Alessandro looked at him.
Victor's voice was calm.
"But sharp."
"The real game begins tonight."
Then he turned and walked away into the crowd.
Elena exhaled slowly.
"Well."
She looked at Alessandro.
"You weren't exaggerating."
Alessandro's gaze remained fixed on Victor's retreating figure.
"No."
Elena took a sip of champagne.
"He's… charming."
"Yes."
"And terrifying."
"Yes."
She glanced at him again.
"You two are going to destroy this ballroom eventually, aren't you?"
Alessandro finally looked at her.
"Not tonight."
Elena raised an eyebrow.
"Why not?"
His voice was calm.
"Because tonight…"
He looked across the room at Victor Hale again.
"…we observe."
Across the ballroom, Victor stood beside a group of investors.
But his attention wasn't on them.
His gaze remained on Elena.
A faint smile appeared on his face.
"Very interesting," he murmured.
The chessboard had been set.
And the first move had already been played.
