Chapter 32 - Chapter 32: The Hunter's Smile

Sirens wailed through the streets.

Loud.

Sharp.

Relentless.

The luxury shopping district had transformed into chaos within seconds.

People ran.

Shouted.

Hid behind cars and inside stores.

Police vehicles blocked off the roads as security teams moved with precision.

Inside the boutique, shattered glass covered the floor like ice.

Elena stood still for a moment, her breathing uneven.

The echo of the gunshot still rang in her ears.

But her fear…

Was fading.

And something colder was taking its place.

Outside, Alessandro moved fast.

His men surrounded the building, weapons drawn, eyes scanning every rooftop.

"North building," Adrian's voice came through the comm.

"Fifth floor access point."

"I'm already there," Alessandro replied.

His tone wasn't rushed.

It was controlled.

Dangerously calm.

He entered the adjacent building without hesitation, two guards right behind him.

The stairwell door slammed open.

Footsteps echoed sharply as they moved upward.

Fast.

Precise.

Hunting.

Meanwhile, back in the boutique—

Adrian stepped inside, scanning the area quickly.

"Elena."

She looked at him.

"I'm fine."

He nodded, relieved but still tense.

"Stay close. We're clearing the building."

She stepped over the broken glass carefully.

Her heels made soft crunching sounds.

"This is insane," she muttered.

Adrian didn't disagree.

"He wanted to make a statement."

"Well he did."

She glanced toward the shattered window.

"And he missed."

Adrian looked at her.

"No."

"What?"

"That wasn't a miss."

Elena frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"He had a clear shot."

She blinked.

"And he didn't take it."

"Exactly."

Silence.

Elena's stomach tightened slightly.

"So…"

She exhaled slowly.

"…he's playing with me."

Adrian nodded.

"Yes."

She clenched her jaw.

"I hate him."

Upstairs, five floors above—

Alessandro kicked the door open.

The rooftop access burst wide.

Cold air rushed in.

Rainwater still coated the surface from the storm earlier.

Empty.

No sniper.

No weapon.

Just silence.

One of the guards spoke.

"Sir—over here."

Alessandro walked toward the edge of the rooftop.

A long black rifle lay on the ground.

Abandoned.

Clean.

Precise.

Professional.

Alessandro picked it up slowly.

Examined it.

His eyes darkened.

"He planned this."

The guard nodded.

"Escape route?"

"Already gone."

Alessandro looked over the edge of the building.

Far below, the city moved as if nothing had happened.

Cars.

People.

Normal life.

Somewhere in that crowd…

The sniper had disappeared.

Adrian's voice came through the comm.

"He's gone."

"I know."

Alessandro's grip tightened around the rifle.

"He left it behind on purpose."

"Yes."

"A message."

"Exactly."

Alessandro's voice dropped.

"He wants us to know he was here."

Back in the boutique, Elena stepped outside carefully, escorted by security.

The street was now filled with flashing lights.

Police.

Crowds being pushed back.

Media beginning to gather.

Cameras.

Phones.

Questions.

"Ma'am, are you okay?"

"What happened?"

"Was that a gunshot?"

Elena didn't answer.

Adrian stepped in front of her.

They moved quickly toward the car.

But before Elena stepped inside—

She paused.

Something felt off.

A strange instinct.

She turned slightly.

Her eyes scanned the crowd.

Faces.

Strangers.

Movement.

And then—

She saw him.

For just a second.

Across the street.

Standing still.

A man in a dark coat.

Watching.

Their eyes met.

His lips curved slightly.

A small…

Satisfied smile.

Elena's breath caught.

"That's him…"

Adrian looked around immediately.

"Where?"

"There—"

But the man was already gone.

Disappeared into the crowd.

Like he had never been there.

Elena got into the car slowly.

Her hands clenched slightly.

Her heartbeat steady now.

Not panicked.

Focused.

The door closed.

The convoy began moving again.

Inside the car, silence returned.

Adrian spoke first.

"You saw him."

"Yes."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

Alessandro's voice came through the comm.

"Describe him."

Elena stared out the window.

"Tall."

"Dark coat."

"Calm."

She paused.

"And smiling."

Silence.

Adrian frowned.

"That's not normal behavior."

Elena shook her head.

"No."

"It's not."

Alessandro's voice came again.

"That wasn't just the sniper."

"What do you mean?" Adrian asked.

"He wanted to be seen."

Elena whispered,

"He wanted me to see him."

"Yes."

The realization settled in.

Heavy.

Clear.

Marcus Virelli wasn't hiding anymore.

He was stepping into the game.

Personally.

Back at the penthouse, the tension followed them inside.

Doors locked.

Security doubled.

Every corner monitored.

Elena walked straight toward the center of the room.

Then stopped.

She turned toward Alessandro.

"He was there."

"I know."

"He looked at me like…"

She struggled to find the words.

"Like I was already his."

The room went silent.

Adrian looked uneasy.

"That's not good."

Elena let out a slow breath.

"No."

"It's not."

Alessandro stepped closer to her.

His presence steady.

Grounding.

"He made his move."

Elena looked up at him.

"And now?"

His eyes were cold.

Sharp.

Unforgiving.

"Now we make ours."

Elena nodded slowly.

For the first time since this began…

She wasn't just reacting.

She understood the enemy.

Marcus Virelli wasn't just trying to kill her.

He was trying to break her.

Control her.

Own the fear.

But he had made one mistake.

He let her see him.

And now—

She would remember his face.
