Chapter 33 - Chapter 33: The Mark

The penthouse felt different that night.

Not quieter.

Not louder.

Just… heavier.

Like the walls themselves understood something had changed.

Elena stood alone near the center of the living room, her reflection faintly visible in the darkened glass.

She wasn't looking outside anymore.

Not after what happened.

Not after him.

Marcus Virelli.

For the first time, he wasn't just a name.

Not just a shadow.

She had seen him.

And worse—

He had seen her.

Behind her, the door opened.

Alessandro walked in, removing his jacket slowly.

His movements were controlled, but Elena could feel the tension in him.

"You shouldn't be standing alone."

She didn't turn.

"I'm not alone."

"You are."

She smiled faintly.

"That's debatable."

He stepped closer.

"From now on, you don't move without security."

Elena turned to face him.

"You've said that five times already."

"And I'll say it again."

She crossed her arms.

"I'm not fragile."

His voice dropped.

"I know."

"Then stop treating me like I'll break."

Silence.

For a moment, they simply looked at each other.

Then Alessandro said something unexpected.

"He looked at you."

Elena blinked.

"What?"

"At the scene."

His jaw tightened slightly.

"I saw the footage."

She frowned.

"You were watching?"

"Yes."

"And?"

His voice turned colder.

"I didn't like it."

She raised an eyebrow.

"You didn't like a lot of things today."

"This is different."

He stepped closer.

"He didn't look at you like a target."

Elena's expression shifted slightly.

"He looked at me like I belonged to him."

"Yes."

The words settled between them.

Uncomfortable.

Real.

Elena exhaled slowly.

"Well…"

She tried to sound casual.

"That's disturbing."

Alessandro didn't respond.

Instead, he reached into his pocket and pulled out something small.

A black velvet box.

Elena frowned.

"What's that?"

He opened it.

Inside was a delicate bracelet.

Simple.

Elegant.

But clearly expensive.

She looked confused.

"Now?"

His voice remained calm.

"Wear it."

She raised an eyebrow.

"Is this a gift or a command?"

"Both."

Elena hesitated for a moment.

Then took the bracelet.

As she fastened it around her wrist, she noticed something unusual.

It clicked into place with a soft, precise sound.

Too precise.

She looked up.

"…this isn't just jewelry, is it?"

Alessandro shook his head.

"No."

Adrian's voice came from behind them as he walked into the room.

"It's a tracker."

Elena stared at her wrist.

"A tracker?"

"Yes."

Adrian leaned against the table.

"GPS, biometric sensors, emergency signal."

She blinked.

"So I'm officially tagged now."

Alessandro's voice was steady.

"You're protected."

She held up her wrist.

"This feels more like being monitored."

Adrian shrugged.

"Same difference."

Elena sighed.

"Fantastic."

She dropped her hand.

"I went from normal life to being hunted and tracked in three days."

Alessandro looked at her.

"You're alive."

"That's a low bar."

Adrian suddenly spoke again.

"We have another problem."

Both of them turned toward him.

"What now?" Elena asked.

He turned his tablet toward them.

A news headline filled the screen.

"Attempted Assassination Linked to Romano Family."

Elena groaned.

"Oh, great."

Adrian continued.

"Media picked it up faster than expected."

Alessandro's expression hardened.

"Control it."

"I'm trying."

Elena walked closer.

"Let me guess."

She read the screen quickly.

"They're blaming you."

Adrian nodded.

"Yes."

"Of course they are."

She crossed her arms.

"This just keeps getting better."

Alessandro spoke quietly.

"This is Marcus."

Adrian nodded.

"He's pushing public pressure now."

Elena looked at them both.

"So not only is he trying to kill me…"

She gestured toward the screen.

"…he's also ruining your reputation."

"Yes."

She shook her head.

"This man is multitasking."

Adrian almost smiled.

"Efficient."

Elena sat down on the couch.

"This is exhausting."

But her mind wasn't tired.

It was racing.

Thinking.

Connecting.

Something still didn't make sense.

She looked up suddenly.

"Wait."

Both men turned toward her.

"What?"

She frowned.

"The photo."

"What about it?" Adrian asked.

"The one from yesterday."

"The one taken before the wedding."

"Yes."

She stood up again.

"You said he was watching me before I married Alessandro."

"Yes."

"And that doesn't bother you?"

Adrian blinked.

"It does."

"No."

She shook her head.

"I mean really bother you."

She pointed at herself.

"I wasn't important before this."

Alessandro's eyes narrowed slightly.

"Explain."

Elena stepped closer.

"If Marcus wanted revenge on you…"

She gestured toward him.

"…why would he start watching me before I even entered your life?"

Silence.

Adrian frowned.

"That's…"

He paused.

"…a good question."

Elena's voice became sharper.

"This isn't random."

"No."

"This isn't just revenge."

Alessandro's expression darkened.

"Then what is it?"

Elena looked at him directly.

"I think…"

She hesitated for a second.

Then said it.

"I think I was already part of his plan."

The room went completely silent.

Adrian shook his head slightly.

"That doesn't make sense."

"Doesn't it?"

Elena crossed her arms.

"He knew where I was."

"He knew my movements."

"He knew how to reach me."

She looked between them.

"That's not something you do in a day."

Alessandro's voice dropped.

"No."

Elena's eyes hardened slightly.

"That means one of two things."

Adrian stepped closer.

"What?"

She answered quietly.

"Either he's been planning this for a long time…"

She paused.

"…or someone gave him information about me."

The air shifted instantly.

Adrian's expression turned serious.

"A leak."

Alessandro didn't say anything.

But his silence said enough.

Elena felt it too.

Something new.

Something worse than before.

Not just an enemy outside.

But the possibility of someone inside.

Watching.

Waiting.

Betraying.

She looked at Alessandro.

"If someone close to you is feeding him information…"

Her voice lowered.

"…then I'm not just a target."

She touched the bracelet on her wrist.

"I'm marked."

Alessandro's gaze turned cold.

Dangerously cold.

"Then we find out who."

Outside, the city continued as normal.

But inside the Romano penthouse…

The war had just taken a darker turn.

Because now—

They weren't just hunting Marcus Virelli.

They were hunting a traitor.
