I found myself struggling to make the perfect toast. I had the jam, I had the honey, and I even had the butler make my bread.
But it still didn't taste quite right.
As I hummed away there was a knock on my door.
"Excuse me, miss, you've received a letter from the empire."
I tilted my head curiously.
"A letter?"
I stood to my feet and opened the door. On the other side was my best friend in the whole wide world. Alfred.
Alfred handed an unmarked letter forward. "Lady Zenith dropped it off."
Oooooh.
I gently took the letter from Alfred and bowed. "Many thanks, Alfred."
Alfred sighed softly. "It's not… never mind."
He turned to leave. I closed the door with a soft click before returning to my spot on the floor and sitting down.
I flipped the unmarked letter in my hand once, then twice. Seeing nothing on it, I opened it.

I'm not dead yet, and you better not be either.
School starts in a bit, I might already be in a class by the time you read this. Anyway, I'm coming to get you soon.

I blinked before a blush crawled up my cheeks. My tail started to brush against the carpet rapidly.
Lafayette really sent me a letter.
This was the most romantic thing I've ever received!
He really does care. I knew he was just being mean all along. He's such a bad liar.
Which means it's true love!
My mate, Lafayette!
I hugged the letter and squealed.
"I knew he'd survive, I just knew it. And now he's coming to get me!"
I kicked my feet in the air with a giddy laugh.

Epilogue 2:
Location: Kotal kingdom.
POV: Provost Zenith.

After having the letter delivered to Jashen, I made my way into the palace.
Where her majesty awaited me.
She sat in her study, in her husband's lap no less. "Oh Emanuel, tell me more!" She giggled as she buried her face in his chest.
Emanuel, with a voice deeper than usual, continued. "My love, with thighs like yours, I'm willing to commit high treason for a taste."
I audibly cleared my throat.
The royals looked up with wide eyes.
"Ah, Zenith, you're early." Queen Elizabeth hurriedly stood to her feet as her white eyes darted around the room.
Emanuel swallowed hard as he stood with his hands over his crotch.
"I'll be… in my study."
I stepped aside as he quickly walked out of the room.
"Zenith." He nodded.
"Your majesty." I nodded back.
With him out of the room, I closed the door and stepped further inside.
Elizabeth sat back down and stared up at me.
I stood across from her and looked down.
There was a long silence between us.
Finally, I broke it. "I'll commit treason for a taste?"
Elizabeth blushed deeply. "You're just jealous no man would do such a thing for you. That's all."
She averted her gaze.
I smirked.
"Right, anyway I'm here to make my report, however ill-timed it may be."
Elizabeth smoothed out her dress. "Go on then."
"The geopolitical situation has changed again. The elves up north continue to send ships west. It's recently been confirmed that they have some kind of colonization project in the new world."
Elizabeth frowned.
"What does this look like?"
"They're assimilating the native elves into their culture. The East Coast has three distinct proto-nations. With the largest having a population of around a million."
Elizabeth reclined in her seat as she crossed her arms. "I see, should we be worried about this?"
I shook my head.
"Not in the short term, however long term we should look into creating colonies of our own. The demon continent has vast amounts of resources, resources we can use to further modernize not just our kingdom but the human realm in its entirety."
I gestured a hand aside. "Speaking of, with the help of the dwarven rebels the first locomotives have been finalized and we'll begin laying track by next month. We've also been planning to expand the network with our neighbors to boost trade."
Elizabeth nodded. "Good, and what of the federation itself?"
"The revolution has been stomped out but rebel cells still exist throughout the federation. Should it be necessary we can help restart it. I have several agents capable of that."
"Excellent, and what of the empire? Anything new there?"
"Yes, there is a boy named Lafayette Dumica Tide. Son of Lilith Dumica Tide. I believe he will be a major player in any upcoming conflict the empire finds itself in. Not only that, but we have his lover here in Kotal."
Elizabeth's eyes went wide. "Did you kidnap her?"
I chuckled and shook my head. "No, she's a traveler from the far east. We have her in our safe house, she is taken care of."
"Good. If this boy is important as you say, the last thing I want is to lose our leverage."
Another pause.
I had considered mentioning his abilities regarding the chaos dragon.
But I think I'll keep that for myself, at least for now.
Elizabeth then sighed. "Well, you've done great work as always, Zenith." She stood to her feet and stepped towards the window.
She watched as the oil lamps flickered on and the streets began to quiet. "On your way out, be sure to send Emanuel back in."
I bowed. "Yes, your majesty."
I turned to leave and as I opened the door, she called my name. "Zenith."
I looked over my shoulder. "Yes?"
She smirked.
"Be sure to knock next time, otherwise you might witness my next daughter being conceived."
A soft chuckle escaped me. "You and Emanuel are no better than dogs."
Elizabeth rolled her eyes with a playful grin. "Jealousy and envy, my dear. Jealousy and envy…"
