Leo stood at the glass for another minute.
Maybe two.
Then he pushed off the wall, walked back through the lobby doors, and started moving again.
He didn't have a plan. He had one thought, and it was the same thought he'd been running on since he left the hospital: Alex.
Where Alex would go after leaving the office in a hurry.
Where Alex went when something happened and he needed to be somewhere that was his.
His apartment.
It was the only answer Leo had, and it was probably wrong, and he was going anyway.
He took the subway because it was faster than trying to find a cab.
He stood in the car with one hand gripping the overhead rail, breathing, trying to slow his heart rate to something manageable.
An elderly woman across from him glanced up from her phone, looked at his face, and looked away again with the particular tact of someone who recognized grief and wanted no part of it.
He didn't blame her.
The city moved past the windows in blurred light.
