Claire's POV
I chased sleep without respite, tossing and turning like a nightmare afflicted human. Only I wasn't having a nightmare. My reality was a nightmare.
Me.
Claire Montgomery, pregnant without a husband to show for it. He wasn't even my boyfriend.
A laugh scraped out of me— hollow, humourless — as I stared at the ceiling. "Oh, Claire."
I pitied myself. I should have known since the beginning that everything was going to end sooner or later with me having to bear the brunt of it all.
The only good thing that came out of this arrangement was the money that settled my family home's mortgage. Everything else was paid for with my emotional and mental health. My peace of mind.
I wanted to leave, to go home. According to the contract, we had about a week left after which I could return home and put all of this behind me.
