Chapter 23 - Chapter Twenty-Three: The Core Engine

The chamber hummed with ancient power.

Aeralyn stepped slowly into the massive cavern, her eyes fixed on the towering structure at its center. The Core Engine rose from the stone floor like a frozen pillar of light, made of twisting ice and crystal that spiraled upward into the darkness above.

Blue runes flowed across its surface like glowing rivers.

And the Heart of Balance was drifting straight toward it.

"Aeralyn…" Teren whispered nervously. "That thing looks very… active."

The Heart pulsed brighter.

Golden light stretched from the crystal toward the Core Engine, forming thin beams of energy that linked the two artifacts.

Caelum stepped forward, his eyes narrowing.

"It recognizes the Heart."

Rovan kept his spear raised as he glanced back toward the canyon entrance.

Behind them, distant thunder echoed through the mountain pass.

The Sentinels were still coming.

"That's great," he muttered. "But those ice giants are about to arrive."

Lysa moved toward the entrance of the chamber and looked down the canyon.

"They're crossing the gap," she warned.

Everyone turned.

Across the broken chasm, the towering Sentinels had begun working together. One giant had lowered its massive arm, forming a bridge for the others to cross.

Their glowing blue eyes were fixed directly on the chamber.

"They know where we are," Aeralyn said.

"Yes," Caelum replied quietly.

"The Core Engine is the heart of their command system."

Teren groaned.

"So we ran straight into their headquarters."

Meanwhile, the Heart of Balance floated closer to the Core Engine.

The moment the crystal reached the center of the chamber, the machine reacted.

A deep vibration rolled through the cavern.

Runes across the walls ignited all at once.

Blue light flooded the chamber like rising water.

The Core Engine began rotating slowly, ancient mechanisms grinding as they awakened after centuries of dormancy.

Aeralyn felt the warmth in her chest surge.

Her magic responded instantly.

"It's pulling energy," she said.

Caelum's eyes widened slightly.

"No…"

"What?" Rovan asked.

"The Engine isn't attacking the Heart."

"It's synchronizing with it."

The golden light from the Heart expanded outward, mixing with the cold blue glow of the machine.

Warmth and winter collided in swirling streams of magic.

The entire chamber shook violently.

Teren grabbed onto a rock pillar.

"I really wish ancient magic would stop doing that!"

Outside the chamber, a thunderous crash echoed.

The first Sentinel had reached the entrance.

Its massive shadow stretched across the cavern floor.

Lysa raised her bow.

"They're here."

The Sentinel stepped forward.

Ice claws scraped against the stone floor as the enormous construct entered the chamber.

Behind it, more glowing shapes appeared in the canyon.

The army had arrived.

Rovan stepped in front of the others.

"Well," he said, spinning his spear once, "I guess we're defending the magic machine now."

But before the Sentinel could attack—

The Core Engine flared.

A massive wave of energy exploded outward from the center of the chamber.

Golden and blue light merged into a blinding flash.

The Sentinel froze mid-step.

Its glowing eyes flickered.

The runes across its body began changing color.

From blue…

To gold.

Teren blinked.

"…Did we just reprogram it?"

The Sentinel slowly lowered its massive arms.

It turned away from them.

Then it faced the canyon.

Toward the approaching army.

Aeralyn stared in shock.

"The Heart changed it."

Caelum nodded slowly.

"The Core Engine was designed to control the Sentinels."

"And now it answers to the Heart."

Outside the chamber, the other Sentinels continued marching forward.

The newly awakened guardian stepped out to meet them.

Its golden runes burned brightly.

The giant raised its arm.

And slammed it into the nearest attacking Sentinel.

The impact shook the mountain.

Rovan grinned.

"Oh."

"I like this plan."

Aeralyn looked back at the glowing Core Engine.

The Heart of Balance floated at its center, pulsing steadily as warmth and winter finally flowed together in harmony.

But the machine was still awakening.

More runes ignited along the chamber walls.

Deeper mechanisms began to turn.

And somewhere far beneath the mountain…

Something older than the Sentinels stirred.

Caelum's expression darkened.

"This isn't over."

Aeralyn followed his gaze toward the glowing depths of the Core Engine.

"What else is down there?"

The mountain trembled again.

And this time…

The sound came from below.
