The tremor was deeper than the others.
Not the heavy footsteps of a Sentinel.
Not the grinding of ancient gears.
This vibration came from far below the chamber, somewhere beneath layers of stone, ice, and forgotten tunnels. It rolled upward through the mountain like a slow heartbeat.
Everyone in the chamber felt it.
Teren looked down at the floor nervously.
"…That did not sound encouraging."
The Core Engine continued spinning slowly at the center of the cavern. Streams of golden and blue magic spiraled between the Heart of Balance and the ancient machine, casting moving shadows across the stone walls.
Outside the chamber, the clash of giants had begun.
The Sentinel that now bore golden runes had stepped into the canyon and slammed its massive arm into the advancing army. The sound of ice colliding with stone echoed like thunder through the pass.
Rovan grinned as he watched from the entrance.
"Alright," he said. "That's the kind of backup I like."
Another tremor shook the ground.
Stronger this time.
Dust fell from the ceiling of the chamber.
Aeralyn turned toward the Core Engine.
"It's still waking up."
Caelum stood beside the glowing machine, studying the shifting runes carefully.
"Yes," he said quietly.
"But something else is waking with it."
Lysa stepped closer.
"You mean beneath it."
Caelum nodded.
"The Core Engine was never meant to stand alone."
Teren blinked.
"…Of course it wasn't."
The chamber shook again.
This time a deep crack split across the stone floor near the center of the room.
Aeralyn stepped back quickly.
"What is that?"
The crack widened slowly.
Cold air rushed upward from the darkness below.
Ancient.
Freezing.
Older than the Sentinels.
The Heart of Balance pulsed rapidly now, as if reacting to the presence rising from beneath the mountain.
Caelum's voice lowered.
"There was always one final guardian."
Rovan sighed loudly.
"I really wish you'd mention these things earlier."
Another violent tremor shook the chamber.
The crack in the floor burst open.
Stone shattered outward as something enormous began pushing upward from below.
Aeralyn's breath caught in her throat.
A massive shape emerged from the darkness.
First came a colossal hand made of ice-black crystal.
Then another.
The creature slowly pulled itself upward through the broken floor, towering higher and higher as it rose into the chamber.
Unlike the Sentinels, this being was not made of simple stone and ice.
Its body was carved from dark crystal layered with glowing runes far more complex than any they had seen before.
Ancient armor plates covered its form like frozen scales.
And at the center of its chest burned a single symbol.
A rune unlike any other.
It glowed with deep violet light.
Teren stared in horror.
"…Please tell me that's not another Architect."
Caelum shook his head slowly.
"No."
"It is older."
The giant stood fully now.
Its head nearly touched the ceiling of the chamber.
Glowing violet eyes opened for the first time in centuries.
"The First Sentinel," Caelum whispered.
Rovan looked up at the towering guardian.
"…That name sounds extremely powerful."
The ancient construct turned its head slowly.
Its glowing eyes locked onto the Heart of Balance floating within the Core Engine.
The chamber grew colder instantly.
Aeralyn felt the warmth in her chest surge in response.
"It's targeting the Heart."
The First Sentinel stepped forward.
Each movement cracked the stone floor beneath its weight.
Outside the chamber, the battle between the Sentinel armies continued.
But inside…
A far more dangerous enemy had awakened.
Lysa raised her bow.
"I doubt arrows will stop that."
"Probably not," Rovan admitted.
Teren backed away slowly.
"Definitely not."
The First Sentinel lifted one massive arm.
Purple energy gathered along its hand like swirling lightning.
The Core Engine reacted immediately.
Golden light flared across the chamber.
The Heart of Balance pulsed brighter.
And outside…
The golden Sentinel turned.
It had felt the awakening.
The giant rushed back toward the chamber entrance to defend the Heart.
Inside the cavern, Aeralyn stepped forward.
Golden fire ignited around her hands again.
"We didn't come this far to lose the Heart now."
Caelum stood beside her.
Cold magic spiraled around his arms.
"Then we fight."
The First Sentinel raised its arm higher.
Purple lightning cracked across the chamber walls.
The ancient guardian roared.
And the final battle beneath the mountain began.
