Chapter 36 - Chapter 36: The Shattered Sovereign

The explosion of violet lightning cleared, leaving a crater fifty feet wide in the center of the Pavilion's courtyard.

Cain stood at the center, his hand still clamped over the face of the Azure Frost Saint. But the Level 85 master was not dead. A shimmering veil of celestial ice had formed between Cain's palm and the Saint's skin at the last microsecond.

"A Level 76... pushing me back?" The Saint's voice was muffled, but the killing intent was sharp enough to slice the air. "You are a freak of nature, Devourer. But look at you. You can barely hold your own shape."

Cain didn't answer. He couldn't.

Inside Cain's chest, his ribs—only half-knitted—were grinding against each other with every breath. His lungs felt like they were filled with hot needles. The violet light leaking from his scars wasn't a show of power; it was his very life-force bleeding out because the "container" was broken.

"Cain... no..." Elena tried to stand, but her "Hollowed" state had left her muscles feeling like water. She watched in horror as Cain's right shoulder audibly snapped, the bone unable to handle the sheer output of his own [Void-Crush].

"I don't need... a shape... to kill you," Cain hissed, blood bubbling at the corner of his mouth.

He threw the Saint back with a burst of raw mana, but the effort sent Cain reeling. He staggered, his left leg giving way as the unrefined tendons tore. He didn't fall, though. He jammed the [Scepter of the Burning Heavens] into the ground, using it as a crude crutch.

The Saint drifted into the air, his golden armor frost-white. "You fight like a wounded animal. No grace. No Dao. Just desperate, ugly hunger. Allow me to end your suffering."

"Azure Art: Zero-Point Execution!"

The Saint pointed a finger. A beam of absolute-zero cold shot forward. In his peak state, Cain would have blinked through the void. Now, his nervous system was too lagged to trigger the skill.

THWACK.

The beam hit Cain square in the chest. A layer of black ice instantly began to spread across his torso, freezing his blood and slowing his already struggling heart.

[Health: 18%... 14%...][Vital Organs: Freezing.]

Cain's head hung low. The three Elders and the Saint watched, waiting for the final shatter. Even the Shadow Generals, Malakor and Tyrant-Sun, were pinned by the Saint's Level 85 pressure, unable to intervene.

But then, the ground began to tremble.

It wasn't Cain's power. It was the [Void-Salt] within Elena.

"You're wrong," Elena rasped, crawling toward the edge of the crater. Her porcelain skin was cracking, the silver fluid leaking onto the marble. "He doesn't fight... for the Dao. He fights... for me."

She slammed her hand onto the ground. She couldn't attack the Saint, but she could do one thing: she could offer herself as a conduit.

"Cain! TAKE IT!"

The "Empty Vessel" opened. All the mana Elena had absorbed from the three Elders—the fire, the iron, the ice—wasn't hers to keep. She didn't digest it; she just held it. Now, she funneled that raw, chaotic energy directly into the ley lines beneath Cain's feet.

Cain's eyes snapped open. They weren't violet anymore. They were a terrifying, abyssal black. The ice on his chest didn't melt; it shattered as his body temperature spiked to impossible levels.

He didn't use the Scepter. He let go of it and lunged forward on all fours, moving like a predatory beast rather than a human. The Saint's eyes widened. He tried to throw up a shield, but Cain didn't hit the shield—he bit into it.

CRUNCH.

The Level 85 barrier fractured under Cain's teeth.

[Skill Activated: Primal Devour — No Cooldown!]

Cain's fingers, broken and bleeding, dug into the Saint's golden pauldrons. He wasn't a Monarch anymore; he was a scavenger fighting for survival. He hammered his forehead into the Saint's face, the impact breaking Cain's own skull, but he didn't stop. He used his broken arm to choke the Saint, the raw bone-ends protruding through his skin.

"What... are you?" the Saint gasped, his Level 85 aura flickering as Cain began to suck the mana directly out of his neck.

"I'm the person... who isn't... going to die today," Cain growled.

With a final, suicidal surge of power, Cain triggered [Sovereign's Void-Crush] inside his own body.

The resulting shockwave sent the Saint flying through three marble pillars, his golden armor shattered and his mana-pool scorched. The Saint hit the far wall of the Pavilion and stayed there, slumped and unconscious.

Cain stood in the center of the wreckage. His right arm hung limp at his side, completely useless. Half his face was a mask of blood, and his breathing was a wet, rattling whistle.

[BATTLE COMPLETE.][Status: TOTAL COLLAPSE.][Time to Death: 2 Minutes.]

Cain turned toward Elena. He didn't look at the defeated Elders or the unconscious Saint. He took one step toward her, then another, his boots leaving bloody prints on the white stone.

He reached her and collapsed to his knees, his head falling onto her shoulder.

"Did I... hold the gate?" he whispered, his voice fading.

Elena wrapped her trembling, porcelain arms around him, her own strength failing. "You held it, Cain. You held it."

As the "Alliance of the Falling Star" fled in terror, seeing their Saint defeated by a 'dying' monster, the two of them sat in the ruins—two broken people held together by nothing but sheer, stubborn will.
