Chapter 37 - Chapter 37: The Soul-Anchor

[Time to Death: 45 Seconds]

"Malakor! The altar!" Elena screamed, her porcelain skin flaking away from the stress of the previous battle.

The Bone-Shaper moved with frantic speed, clearing the debris from the starmetal pedestal where the crystalline cube had once sat. He laid Cain down. The Sovereign's skin was cold, his violet scars turning a dull, necrotic grey.

"Lady Elena, if you do this, you are not just saving him," Malakor warned, his emerald eyes flickering. "You are binding your life-force to a Primordial. If he starves, you will wither. If he evolves, you will feel the fire."

"I was already withered before I met him," Elena rasped.

She looked at Cain. His eyes were half-open, but there was no light in them. He was a King who had spent his last coin to protect a single subject.

[Time to Death: 20 Seconds]

Elena placed her hands on the starmetal altar, flanking Cain's head. She closed her eyes and reached into the "Hollow" within her chest. She didn't try to pull mana out; she opened herself up to pull the Primordial Miasma of the deep Archives in.

"I am the vessel," she whispered, the ancient words of the Founding Ancestor echoing in her mind. "I am the gap between the world and the void. Cain... come back."

A surge of terrifying, cold energy erupted from the floor. It passed through Elena's body—using her as a filter to strip away the "poison" of the miasma—and poured into Cain's chest.

Cain's body arched off the altar. His broken ribs snapped back into place with a sound like a forest of trees breaking. The violet light returned to his scars, but it was now threaded with the silver-grey of Elena's essence.

Cain gasped, his lungs inflating with a sudden, violent force. The black smoke leaking from his eyes vanished, replaced by a steady, calm violet glow.

Cain's hand reached out, weakly grasping Elena's wrist. His grip was no longer crushing; it was the grip of a man holding onto a lifeline.

"Elena..." he whispered, his voice finally sounding human again, though it was heavy with exhaustion.

"Sleep, Cain," she said, her own voice failing as she slumped against the altar. Her porcelain skin was now webbed with dark violet veins—the mark of the bond. "I've got the gate. I've still got the gate."

As Cain drifted back into a stable, deep sleep, the violet shield around the altar solidified into a dome of impenetrable crystal. This time, it wasn't just his power protecting them. It was hers, too.

Outside, the Azure Frost Saint was dragged away by his disciples. The "Alliance of the Falling Star" had broken. Rumors began to fly like wildfire across the Three Realms:

•

The Sovereign is a monster who cannot be killed.

•

The girl beside him is a witch who eats the Dao itself.

The Heavenly Pavilion ruins were no longer seen as a prize to be looted. They were now a Forbidden Zone.

For the next week, Elena didn't leave the Archives. She sat by the crystal dome, studying the ledger. She discovered that the "Empty Vessel" wasn't just a way to eat mana—it was a way to reprogram it.

She began to experiment on the remains of the gargoyles. By Day 12 of the hibernation, she hadn't just rebuilt one; she had "Hollowed" it, turning the stone sentinel into a silent, mana-eating guardian that obeyed her every thought.

[Elena's Path: The Hollowed One — Stage 2: Essence Weaving.]

She was no longer the girl who needed a lever to protect a pass. She was becoming the Architect of the Sun-Eater Fortress.
