Chapter 51 - Put Down

Nathan thrust his knife at one of the hounds but it grabbed the blade with its teeth. He tried to yank back the blade but it would not budge.

As he fought one, another lunged at him. He swung the blade with the hound still latched to it.

Although they looked made of smoke. When they came into contact with each other. The hound attached to the blade let go.

As he tried to take advantage of the situation. A hound bit the hem of his trousers and he tripped.

His head hit a machine covered with a tarp and he lost consciousness. The remaining hounds lunged at him simultaneously.

Just like their attack the they fell in unison. The blade flew into Sara's hand. She stood at the doorway with her arm out panting.

Nathan woke up hours later, and the sun was just rising. Sara sat on the floor watching the sun rise.

"How long was I out?" Nathan asked.

"Hours," Sara replied.

"We did it, we saved the kids," Nathan said and sat beside Sara. They watched the sun rise.

"I need to go somewhere far away from the chaos," Sara said to herself.

"Come on, let's go tell them the good news," Nathan suggested.

"You know whoever sent the hellhounds is still out there right?" Sara reminded him.

"Yes, but we need to celebrate little wins," Nathan advised. After a while, Nathan got up and gave Sara a hand helping her up.

They made their way to the abandoned building. When they got there some of the kids were playing tag.

Nathan petted them on their heads before going inside. In a room without a door, Sean was asleep on the floor. Nathan walked in with Sara.

Sean's mother slept in a chair close to the bed Gilbert lay on.

Nathan touched her on the shoulder and she immediately woke up.

"It's safe now, you can go back home," Nathan informed her.

"Really, thank you. I don't know how to repay you two. If you need anything, please don't hesitate to ask," Gilbert's mother said.

She got up and shook Gilbert but he did not wake up. She shook harder and tears started to roll down her cheeks.

She screamed and held Gilbert as tight as she could. Sean was awakened by her scream. He cried and walked over to his mother who hugged him.

Sara quietly walked out. Nathan was going to console her when Sara dragged him away by the hand.

Sara and Nathan were sitting outside when an SUV pulled up in front of them. The door opened and Jane put on her shades.

Nathan got up and introduced Sara and got into the car.

"Sara what?" Jane asked staring at her.

"Cain, Sara Cain," Sara replied.

"What are you waiting for, get in," Jane said inviting Sara into the car.

Sara did as she was told and one of Jane's guards closed the door behind her. She nodded at the driver and they drove off.
