Chapter 31 - Going Home

(MASON'S POV)

I couldn't speak.

The words were trapped somewhere deep in my chest, tangled with shame and fear and the sharp, metallic taste of blood still lingering on my tongue. Blue stood in front of me, tall and impossibly steady among the trees, his blue eyes burning with something raw and dangerous. His hand was still gently holding my chin, forcing me to meet his gaze even though every instinct screamed at me to hide.

Tears kept slipping down my swollen cheeks no matter how hard I tried to stop them. I kept my head low as much as his grip allowed, staring at the ground between us, at the leaves and dirt and my own trembling hands. I felt exposed. Pathetic. Broken. The last person I wanted to see me like this was Blue—the one boy who had started making me feel like maybe, just maybe, I wasn't completely worthless.

Why did I even care what he thought?
