(GILBERT'S POV)
The road stretched endlessly before me, a winding ribbon of dirt and gravel that cut through the dense forest like a scar. I had been walking for nearly an hour, my legs moving on autopilot while my mind remained trapped in a loop I couldn't escape.
Jasper's face. The way his color had drained. The hollow look in his amber eyes. The way he had stood on that road, shoulders hunched, looking like I had reached into his chest and ripped out his heart.
'Why did he look so heartbroken?'
I shook my head violently, trying to dislodge the thought. It didn't matter. None of it mattered. I had made my choice. I had told him the truth. I had walked away.
It was over.
Except it wasn't. Because every time I closed my eyes, I saw him. Every time I breathed, I smelled woodsmoke and something sweet. Every time my heart beat, it ached with a pain I couldn't explain why.
