(GILBERT'S POV)
I stood beside Blue, my heart hammering against my ribs, my palms slick with sweat, my entire body trembling with the kind of fear that made me want to crawl out of my own skin and disappear.
But Blue's hand was warm on my shoulder—steady and grounding—and I clung to that sensation like a drowning man clinging to driftwood.
"Gilbert," he said softly, his ancient eyes searching mine. "Are you ready?"
I wasn't. I would never be ready. But I nodded anyway, because the alternative was to keep running, and I was so tired of running.
Blue's eyes flickered with something I couldn't quite identify. Then I felt it—a subtle shift in the air, a ripple of energy that made my skin prickle. His mind link. He was reaching out to every member of our family, summoning them to the living room, making sure that no one was missing, that no one would be left in the dark.
I should have been grateful for his thoroughness. Instead, I felt sick.
