(MASON'S POV)
The rest of lunch passed quietly.
I didn't have much of an appetite, and Victor seemed to sense it. He stopped joking and simply sat beside me, a silent, steady presence as I pushed food around my tray and tried to convince myself that Blue and the others were fine.
When the bell rang for class, Victor and I gathered our things and headed back toward the main building. The hallway was a river of students-freshmen rushing to beat the crowd, seniors walking with exaggerated slowness, a cluster of sophomores gathered around someone's phone watching a video. The noise swept around us like water, and I let it carry me along.
Damien was behind us.
