(MASON'S POV)
My feet moved before my brain caught up.
One step. Then another. Then another. The hallway stretched and warped around me like a fever dream, the fluorescent lights buzzing overhead, the distant sound of a teacher's voice drifting from a nearby classroom—all of it muffled and far away, swallowed by the roaring in my ears.
Caleb.
He was here.
Standing right in front of me, pinned against the lockers by Victor's iron grip. His hoodie was torn open at the collar, his mask dangling from Victor's fingers. His eyes were wide, darting around like he was searching for a way out, while his fingers curled tightly against Victor's wrist. The panic in him was obvious.
I stopped three feet away.
Close enough to see him. Close enough to 'really' see him.
And what I saw made my stomach clench.
