THE FOREST BEHIND THE SCHOOL
The light moved like something that knew exactly where it was going.
It wound through the school's back hallways, slipped out through a side exit, and disappeared into the forest bordering the property.
I knew that forest better than most. I'd walked those paths countless times. But there was one place I could never forget—the spot beneath a tree where I had found Mason for the first time, sitting alone and crying his heart out after being bullied at school.
That was the moment everything changed for me. Looking at him that day, something inside me had settled into place. From then on, I knew one thing for certain. I was going to protect him with everything I had.
The trees blurred past me as I followed the light. It moved with purpose, never faltering, never slowing, and I pushed myself harder to keep up. Branches whipped at my face. Roots tried to trip me. I didn't care. I would have run through fire to follow that light.
