(MASON'S POV)
THE FOREST BEHIND THE SCHOOL
The trees blurred past me as I sprinted through the underbrush.
I found them under the thickest tree in the clearing—Victor standing over Caleb with his fangs bared, his hand wrapped around Caleb's throat, his eyes blazing with barely restrained fury.
Caleb was on his knees.
He looked terrible.
His skin was burned and blistering, smoking slightly in the dappled sunlight that filtered through the canopy. He was pulling his hoodie down over his face, trying to shield himself from the rays, but it wasn't working. The sun was too strong. Too bright.
And then, suddenly, it wasn't.
It all happened too fast. Like a blink of an eye fast.
Without warning, the clouds rolled in.
