Chapter 30 - chapter Thirty: you can't resign

I laughed dryly.

"You grabbed her and left your wife to die. You grabbed her because she's the only one you care about. Because in your heart I am nothing, and she is everything to you."

He kept quiet. Of course he did. What else could he say?

"I don't want to talk to you. Just leave me alone."he sat by the bed looking at me like he was trying to understand what was going on in my heart, then he stood up and headed to the door.

He was about to leave the room when I suddenly called out.

"Alexander."

He turned around. "Do you need anything?"

I stayed quiet for a moment before speaking again.

"I want to resign after the brand endorsement."

His expression immediately darkened.

"Why?" he asked.

"I just realized that I've spent my whole life working and worrying about one thing or another that I don't even have time for myself."

"You can just take a break from work."

"No. I want to resign. After all, we are getting a divorce soon—"

He cut me off.

"Is that it? You want to quit years of your hard work because of jealousy?"

He yelled while I looked at him in surprise.

"Jealousy?"

"Isn't it about working with Lilian? If you can't handle it, just tell me so I can assign someone else to do it."

"Alexander, what are you even saying? I already told you I just want to have some time for myself."

"You are not going to resign from your job—"

He was cut off by his phone. He took it out, glanced at it, then looked at me.

"We are done talking about this," he said through gritted teeth.

"Hello, Lilian."

Then he left.

He left me there, completely puzzled. Does he expect me to stay and watch him and Lilian get married? Doesn't he think about my feelings?

I suddenly broke into sobs.

I was never like this. Why have I been crying so much lately? I guess it was just the pregnancy hormones… or maybe I was getting weak but didn't want to accept it.

Alexander didn't return, not even the following day.

Since I was injured and couldn't go to the office, I figured I could just work from home. But after many attempts and failing to concentrate, I gave up and closed my laptop, last night's events still playing in my head.

Suddenly my phone vibrated. I checked it and saw a message from Aiden. I immediately remembered my promise to visit his parents.

Aiden: Alicia, how are you doing today?

Alicia: I'm fine. What are you up to?

Aiden: Nothing much. I don't have any shoots today so I'm home. Are you at the office?

Alicia: No. I got hurt the other day at the studio and I have a wound on my leg, so I can't go to work for a couple of days.

Aiden: What happened? Why didn't you tell me? How are you feeling now?

Alicia: I'm feeling better now.

Aiden: Are you still at the hospital? Can I visit?

Alicia: I've already been discharged. I'm at home.

Aiden: That's good to hear. Can I come see you at home?

I thought for a moment and decided it was okay, since Alexander might not even return today.

Alicia: Sure, I'll text you the location.

Aiden: Okay. I'll be there in an hour.

I called Maria and asked her to help me downstairs. I also asked her to prepare snacks because I would be having a guest.

I stayed in the living room watching TV while waiting for Aiden to arrive.

"Mrs Blackwood, I'm done with the snacks," Maria said a moment later.

"Okay Maria, thanks. I believe my guest will be here any minute."

"Okay ma'am, I will be in the kitchen if you need anything."
