THE SAME SENSE OF PANIC STARTS TO BUBBLE UP INSIDE ME, BUT THIS time I get it under control by myself. Instead of succumbing to it, I manage to think. Maybe wolf packs are supposed to be savage, dangerous places.
But nothing about that moment with the children fits that picture. It was the complete opposite, startling in its warmth and joy. Nothing about it suggests a den of bloodthirsty monsters. "Is that what you did?" I ask. "'Commanded' me?"
"I told you to relax, so you did." He frowns. "More… whole-heartedly than I anticipated." No kidding. I snuggled against him. Gazed at him with what I suspect was a look of adoration.
Whole-hearted indeed. It makes me think of what Dad called his subjects who had an exceptional response to an implant: "super responders." That must be what I am to Dominik's subconscious commands. My skin still tingles where he touched my lower back, nerves buzzing with phantom heat.
