Chapter 15 - Anomalies

Wei Shan was drunk.

This needed some explanation.

In all the months Ren had shared the hall with him he had never seen Wei Shan drunk.

He had seen him drink tea every morning with a care.

He had seen him produce a ceramic bottle on certain evenings and pour from it in careful measures.

He had never seen what happened when he had much until tonight.

What happened was this: Wei Shan in his corner with the bottle in his hand of a cup.

His usual careful stillness was replaced by a posture.

It was the posture of a person who had decided that careful stillness was optional for one evening.

His eyes were still sharp.

The rest of him had let its presentation go.

Ren set his mat down.

He began his session.

He said nothing.

Wei Shan watched him for a while.

This was not unusual.

He often watched Ren work without speaking.

The watching was a form of conversation they had developed over months.

It was a way of being present in the space that said more than most exchanges did without requiring words.

Ren had grown used to it.

He had learned to read what kind of watching it was on a given evening.

Tonight it had a quality of building toward something.

"There was a cultivator " Wei Shan said.

He said it like a person says something they have been sitting on for a time.

He had finally decided to set it down.

Not to begin a conversation.

To release a pressure that had been accumulating.

Ren kept his breathing even.

He did not look up.

"Before I came here " Wei Shan said.

"Four or five years before.

I heard about him through the sect networks.

Those channels carry kinds of information faster than the official ones do.

He had a configuration.

Not five paths.

Two paths,. Structured in a way that standard dual-path cultivation is not structured.

He had found a way to run them in a feedback loop. Each path enhancing the other continuously.

Neither one capped the others growth.

His advancement speed was not described in any reference I had read before or have read since."

"What happened to him " Ren said.

"He disappeared " Wei Shan said.

"Before Nascent Soul.

He was at Grand Ascendant Stage Two. Then he was simply not anywhere anymore.

The outer sect networks produced three explanations for it over the following months.

None of them were the one."

"What was the real one " Ren said.

Wei Shan looked at the bottle for a moment.

"Arranged " he said.

"That was the word that eventually came through.

Quietly arranged.

Before his advancement could produce something that certain interested parties had decided they did not want produced.

Not because he had done anything

Not because he posed any threat to anyone.

Because what he was becoming was outside the expected range and outside the expected range made powerful people nervous."

Ren let his session go quiet.

He sat with his hands on his knees.

The secondary hall was still.

Outside the compound moved through its evening rhythm. Disciples returning to dormitories, the kitchen closing.

The particular quality of sound that meant the days activity was finishing.

Inside it was the two of them and the formation stones and what Wei Shan had put between them.

"Anomalies make powerful people nervous " Wei Shan said.

He said it with a flatness that had memorization under it.

The way a person quotes something they have been carrying for a time and have finally found the right moment to deliver.

"That was another piece of information from the period.

Not about the cultivator specifically.

About the category he represented.

About what happens to that category when it becomes visible to the people at the wrong time."

Ren said nothing.

"I am telling you a story " Wei Shan said.

"You can take from it what you take from it."

"You are telling me to be less visible " Ren said.

Wei Shan looked at him.

The alcohol had not reached his eyes.

His eyes were the same as always. Watching with the quality of someone who had spent a very long time learning what to look for.

"You were already planning on it " Wei Shan said.

Not a question.

"Since before I arrived " Ren said.

Wei Shan made a sound.

He looked back at the bottle.

Poured a measure and drank it.

"" he said.

He did not say anything

After a while he left.

He walked without difficulty for a man who had been drinking for some time.

Ren noted this. Filed it.

— ◆ —

He sat alone in the northeast corner and thought carefully.

Grand Ascendant Stage Two.

The cultivator in Wei Shans story had not been weak.

He had not been careless.

He had been strong enough and visible enough that removing him required being arranged. And arranged meant the people doing it had operated above Grand level.

They had done it without leaving a record.

They had done it without consequence to themselves.

Arranged was a word.

It did not mean confronted.

It did not mean defeated in a conflict that left a record.

It meant made to not be present in a way that required no fight and required no explanation afterward.

That kind of removal was preemptive.

Not triggered by what the person had done.

Triggered by what they were becoming.

He thought about what he was becoming.

Five-path simultaneous cultivation with no reference in any existing manual.

A triple-root origin that had rewritten itself under pressure into something with no precedent in the Grand Aether Worlds classification libraries.

A Qi Sense breakthrough that had read lower than reality since the day it happened.

It would continue reading as long as he needed it to.

A physique that absorbed blueprints from genuine conflict and integrated them.

A cultivation scripture soul-imprinted as instinct that answered questions about impossible problems with specific answers.

He was considerably more anomalous than a dual-path feedback loop.

The invisible layer was intact.

The boring version of Ren Valen was working exactly as it was designed to work.

His contribution log was boring.

His cultivation exchange output had been what Body Tempering Layer Two should produce.

Kairos investigation had found nothing because there was nothing in the layer to find.

The boring layer was not a lie.

It was a selection.

Everything visible was accurate.

Everything significant was simply not visible.

That layer needed to hold.

Not for months.

For years.

For many stages as it took to reach a point where the gap between visible and invisible closed.

The invisible had become strong enough to make the threshold irrelevant.

He thought about Wei Shans timing.

Kairos investigation had closed.

Shen Yue had confirmed it a week ago.

The log had been. Reviewed and had produced nothing interesting.

Kairo had filed him as confirmed unremarkable. Moved his attention elsewhere.

Wei Shan had known about the investigation. He had his channels.

Nine years in the sect produced channels. And had waited for it to close before delivering the warning.

Before the investigation closed the same story would have read as: there is a threat be careful.

After it closed it read as: the immediate threat has passed now think about the ones that do not have a deadline.

The timing was deliberate.

Wei Shan had been sitting on this story. This warning for the right moment.

Ren picked up his notebook.

Added one entry.

Wei Shan chose tonight because Kairos investigation closed this week.

He has held this story until the immediate pressure passed.

The warning would arrive as a long-range instruction than a crisis response.

He thinks in sequences, not reactions.

He has been in the sect for nine years.

He stagnated at the thirty-first meridian.

He deflected the compression technique origin question.

He shares information at calibrated moments.

He is not what his position suggests.

The investigation into what he is begins now.

He closed the notebook.

Put his hands on his knees.

The formation stones absorbed quietly around him in the dark.

He began.

— ◆ —

He told Darius the morning.

The relevant parts.

Wei Shan drunk.

The story about the cultivator.

The phrase anomalies make powerful people nervous.

The timing relative to Kairos investigation and what the timing implied about Wei Shans decision-making.

Darius listened all the way through without interrupting.

When Ren finished Darius was quiet for a moment with the quartz piece still in his hand.

"Arranged " Darius said.

"That was the word " Ren said.

"At Grand Ascendant Stage Two " Darius said.

"Yes."

Darius set the quartz down.

He was running the calculation Ren had run the previous evening. What level of resource and authority made a preemptive arrangement at Grand Ascendant Stage Two possible without public record or visible consequence.

He was good at this kind of calculation.

Merchant family background.

He understood resource levels and the difference between what was possible and what was operationally possible for people with sufficient motivation and institutional cover.

"The Bureau " Darius said.

"Probably " Ren said.

". Something operating through the Bureau.

The outer sect networks would not have been able to confirm the mechanism.

Just the. The word used for it."

Darius looked at him directly.

"He is telling you this because of the category.

Not the individual."

"Yes " Ren said.

"The category you're, in " Darius said.

"The category I'm in " Ren confirmed.

Darius sat with this. He was not the kind of person who freaked out when he heard information. Instead he processed it by going quiet and then asking the useful question he could think of. This was one of the things that made him worth talking to.

"What do you need?" he said.

"Keep the channels you have open " Ren said. "If anything comes through them about cultivation happenings Bureau activity or weird disappearances in the outer sects history I want to know. Don't go looking for it directly. Just keep the channels open. Tell me what comes through them naturally."

"I've been doing that since the roof incident " Darius said.

The roof incident. Two Half-Step. A Bureau agent. Eleven minutes that Ren had timed from a maintenance building with a notebook. He had been there working on a calculation when the birds stopped singing.

"How much do you have?" Ren asked.

"Quite a bit " Darius said. "Some of it connects,. Some of it is still fragments waiting for more pieces. Do you want to hear it "

"Yes " Ren said.

Darius told him. It took most of the morning.

Some of the information was rumors. The kind of stuff that circulated in outer sect networks because it wasn't important enough for official channels to suppress, but not clear enough to stand on its own.. Darius had been collecting it methodically since the roof incident and when you put method into fragments over months you started to see a pattern. Individual pieces that meant nothing on their own started to form a picture when laid next to each other in the order.

When Darius finished Ren sat with it for a moment. Organized what he had received into what he already knew.

"Wei Shan " Ren said. "Nine years in the sect. What do you know about him?"

Darius picked up the quartz again. "That's a conversation. I've been building that file since your month. You started asking questions about him in a way that told me you had already noticed that he wasn't producing what his position should produce."

"I am asking now " Ren said.

"I know " Darius said.. Told him.

What he had was not a picture. He said this before he started and said it again when he finished.. What he had was this: Wei Shan had not arrived at House Valen as a new outer sect disciple. He had transferred from a -tier sect in the Aethernox interior that had dissolved about nine years ago. Funding withdrawn, sponsorship withdrawn the sect simply ceasing to operate through administrative process rather than conflict. Wei Shan had been one of eleven disciples from that sect who transferred to House Valens sect when the dissolution finalized.

The other ten had moved on within two or three years. Wei Shan had not moved on.

The dissolved sect, when Darius had finally traced it through records had specialized in advanced formation work. The kind of formation expertise that was considered unusual for a sect at that resource tier.

Ren sat with this.

A formation sect. Wei Shan who had arrived at the compression technique by a path he deflected when questioned. Nine years in a position that didn't match his capability. Information shared at calibrated moments. A story, about a disappeared cultivator delivered at the right time.

"Hes waiting for something to finish " Ren said.

"That's what I think " Darius said. "I don't know what."

"Neither do I " Ren said. "Not yet."

He added three lines to his notebook.

Wei Shan: formation sect background. Transfer was not random. The nine years have a purpose he has not stated and has not been asked directly. Ask directly when the right question can be formed.

He closed the notebook.

He went to work.
