It happened at the resource distribution hall on a Tuesday afternoon.
Ren was not involved. He was walking down a corridor next to the hall on his way from a library when he heard a commotion through the wall. Not what was being said, but how loud it was and the tone.
It sounded like someone who had never had to hold back because nobody around them had ever given them a reason to.
He slowed down. Didn't stop.
Through an open door at the end of the corridor he could see what was happening in the distribution hall. A junior from a branch. Third year, by their robe. Was at the counter. The insignia on their robe showed they were from Elder Sous family line.
This junior looked like they usually got what they wanted. They came to the compound for a task and found someone they thought shouldn't be at the counter.
The younger disciple at the counter was new. Ren had seen her in the hall before. She was only fifteen and still figuring things out.
The juniors attitude made it clear what they thought about the situation.
The younger disciple moved. She didn't have the skills, family backing or position to do anything else. She held her token in both hands. Stood to the side looking down.
The junior finished their business without looking at her. Two other outer sect disciples there didn't say anything. Looked away.
Ren noted the juniors insignia and the counter number. He went to the library found what he needed and returned to the hall.
He sat in the corner and thought.
He thought about what had happened. The junior had used their power. Main branch juniors had priority access to distribution facilities when they needed it. The outer sect disciples didn't have a way to complain that would change anything.
The younger disciple couldn't do anything. The witnesses couldn't do anything. Ren couldn't do anything openly without consequences he didn't want.
He could do something quietly.
He thought about whether to do it.
The junior had used their power to make someone with power feel the difference. Not for any reason just to show they could.
He thought about the younger disciple holding her token and looking down.
He wrote in his notebook: main branch, Elder Sous family line, third year. Batch seven distribution. Request: renewal of compound cultivation room monthly. Processing time: six days. Next date: Thursday. Action: delay by two weeks legitimate reason, no irregularity.
He closed his notebook. Started his session.
The morning he found Shen Yue.
He told her the facts. She. Didn't ask any questions about how he felt.
"Inner compound administrative office " she said. "Standard renewal. Six-day processing window."
"Yes. Two-week delay, reason. No irregularity."
She thought for a moment. "Elder Rho Callens controls resource processing for inner sect renewals. His office is busy with promotion assessments. The delay is genuine."
"Can you send this request to his overflow queue?"
"A trigger in the system will do it " she said. "I have a contact. The trigger is legitimate. The delay is legitimate. Two weeks maybe three."
"Two weeks is enough."
"The junior won't know why their request was delayed " she said. "They won't connect it to Tuesday. They won't connect it to you."
"That is what I need " Ren said.
"I will set up the trigger today " Shen Yue said. "The request will go into overflow in two days."
"Thank you " Ren said. He went back to his session.
Three days later Darius found out.
He had connections that let him see resource allocation patterns. He traced the request to the trigger. Came to Ren.
"Cultivation room renewal " Darius said. "Main branch junior. Overflow queue. Two to three week delay."
"Administrative backlog " Ren said. "Genuine. Three promotion assessments this month."
"Distribution hall. Tuesday. New disciple. Volume problem."
"Yes."
"You were in the corridor."
"Returning from the library."
Darius examined a quartz piece. "You did nothing."
"Correct."
". His cultivation room access is inconvenient for two to three weeks."
"His request was processed through overflow due to backlog " Ren said. "That is all."
Darius was quiet. Then: "This changes nothing. He is branch. She is sect. The time he comes through here the same thing happens."
"Yes " Ren said.
" why."
Ren thought about it. "I was in the corridor. It cost nothing. It was available."
Darius examined the quartz a time. "That is either the reason I have ever heard for doing something or the largest. I cannot tell which."
"It is both " Ren said.
Darius had nothing to say. He left.
That evening Wei Shan noticed something was different.
He didn't say anything directly. He rarely did.. As he packed his mat he said: "You did something today that you are not going to tell me about."
"Yes " Ren said.
". It worked correctly."
"Yes."
Wei Shan finished packing and left.
Ren sat alone for a while. He thought about why Wei Shan had noticed. Not what he had noticed. It was clear Wei Shan hadn't figured out what had happened.. Something about Ren had told Wei Shan that something had been done.
Three weeks later Darius found out that the junior had complained about delays to three people. None of them had thought it was interesting.
The junior hadn't connected the delay to anything. He hadn't thought about Ren.
Ren filed it: resolved.
He saw the disciple again in the communal hall. She was eating alone. Still figuring out her space.
Ren. Left before the hall emptied.
The response was complete.
He went back, to work.
That evening Wei Shan noticed something was different again.
He didn't say anything directly. As they packed their mats he said: "You did something today that you are not going to tell me about."
"Yes " Ren said.
". It worked correctly."
"Yes."
Wei Shan shouldered his mat. Left.
Ren sat alone in the corner for a while. The formation stones were taking in energy. The eleventh stone was absorbing it in its way. The secondary hall was very quiet.
He thought about what Wei Shan had noticed. It was clear that Wei Shan didn't know exactly what had happened. He just knew that something had been done. Ren thought that maybe it was something about the way he acted or the way he was that evening. It made Wei Shan think that something was finished. He didn't know what.
Ren made a note to himself. Wei Shan is good at sensing things. He doesn't always know what they mean. This was something Ren had already figured out. It was more proof. Over time Ren had learned a lot about what Wei Shan can. Can't tell about him. It was helpful because Wei Shan wasn't trying to pretend to know things. He was just being honest.
Ren thought that what Wei Shan sensed was real.
He made another note. Wei Shan knew that something was done. He didn't know what. Ren would have to be more careful.
He closed his notebook. Started the evening session.

Three weeks after what happened on Tuesday Ren got some information from Dariuss inner channels. It wasn't something he had asked for.
The junior had been talking about how slow things were. He had told three people in one day.. None of them thought it was a big deal. One of them just said that sometimes things get backed up. None of them thought it was connected to anything or anyone. The junior didn't have any ideas about what was causing the delay.
His access to the cultivation room had been stopped for two and a half weeks. He was annoyed. It didn't change his mind about the outer compound or the people there.
Ren made a note. It was done. The plan had worked exactly as it was supposed to. The delay. Then it was over. It was a minor problem with a simple explanation. Nobody suspected anything.
Ren saw the disciple a couple of times in the communal hall over the next few weeks. She was eating alone. She was starting to sit in a way that made her less noticeable. It was a strategy for her.
Ren ate at the table. He didn't look at her. Talk to her. He had done what he could. The rest was up to her.
He left before the hall started to empty.
He went back, to work.
