The Greenwood Forest threat level review was assigned to him the week the second cessation test ended.
He had not arranged a swap this year. Years review had come during a critical time for the Circulation tier and he had traded it to a second-year student for three months of storage yard access priority. The storage yard access had been really useful. This year he had no reason to avoid walking the perimeter for two days and there was another reason to take the assignment: he had been noticing the northeastern boundary sections Qi density since his first week in the compound and had never had a chance to spend time observing it up close.
The review gave him a chance to do that.
He collected the documentation materials from Elder Sous office on Tuesday morning. The second assigned person was a year outer sect cultivator named Callum who had done the review for the last three years and thought it was one of the more pleasant assignments. Callum talked a lot as he walked, which was not really helpful. It was more like he was narrating everything he saw. He was a person to work with but he did not produce any useful information.
They started at the boundary.
Ren had walked the compounds perimeter many times over three years. The halls eastern wall faced the forest. The training path behind Block C ran along the edge. He knew the Qi profile of every section of the outer boundary from his daily walks.
The forest had layers of Qi.
The surface layer was the activity of animals in the forest. The creatures with Qi-sensitive metabolisms like Grade 1 and 2 beasts. There were also markers left in the Qi substrate and the active traces of recent movement and feeding.
The middle layer was the signatures of established patterns. Range boundaries that had been the same for years and older territorial claims that had survived many generations of beasts. The slower ambient activity of the forests balance was also in this layer.
The deep layer was the spirit vein structure and the forests own accumulation. It was very old, much older than the sect compound or the cultivators who built it.
He read all three layers as they walked. The western and southern sections were consistent with what he was used to seeing. Three years of walking had given him an idea of what was normal and these sections looked normal.
Then they reached the section.
He stopped walking, which he had not done at any point in the review.
Callum continued walking for a steps before noticing. "Something wrong?"
"I am checking a marker " Ren said. He looked at the demarcation post, the tree line and the ground between the post and the trees.
He read the Qi again.
The surface layer was quiet. There were no markers, no active feeding traces and no recent movement signatures. The substrate had a flatness like nothing was using the territory.
He looked at the sections to either side. They had activity with Grade 1 and 2 beast signatures.
There was a thirty-meter section of habitat that the forests lower-grade beast population was not using.
"Callum " he said, "what does the documentation say about this section in years?"
Callum came back and looked. He pulled out last years review document and scanned it. "Standard Grade 1-2. Consistent with boundary designation. No notes."
"What about two years " Ren asked.
Callum checked. "Same."
"How back do you have records?"
"I have the last three years. Sous office has further back."
"Normal in all three " Ren said.
" far as normal goes " Callum said, "there is always some variance year to year.. Nothing that got flagged."
Ren wrote his observation into the current review documentation. Section, approximately thirty-meter span, absence of Grade 1 and 2 territorial activity territory conditions appear suitable no disturbance indicators, significant deviation from prior year documentation recommend monitoring in next annual review.
Callum read it over his shoulder. "Could be seasonal " he said, "sometimes they shift range in the month of autumn."
"This is the month of summer " Ren said.
Callum shrugged. "Beasts are strange."
"Yes " Ren said.
They continued the review.
He went back to the office that afternoon and pulled the previous review records going back eleven years. Elder Sous filing was organized by year and accessible to any outer sect disciple conducting an official review. He read all eleven records.
The northeastern section appeared in every years documentation. In every year standard Grade 1 and 2 beast activity, consistent with outer boundary designation, no flags. The recent flag of any kind in that section was nine years ago. A temporary relocation of the outer demarcation marker after a brief incursion of Grade 3 beasts that had moved on within two weeks.
He checked the years sighting log next. The sighting logs were maintained by the outer sect disciples assigned to forest proximity dormitories Block C had three entries per week on average recording any beast activity observed near the boundary.
The last recorded beast activity in the section was in the fourth month of the previous year. Fourteen months ago.
The cessation had happened sometime in the fourteen months. But it had taken time for the beast populations range behavior to shift from incidental avoidance to the permanent-feeling absence he had observed today. That kind of shift took months to establish. Which meant the underlying cause of the avoidance had begun at least six months before the last sighting probably closer to a year before.
He did the arithmetic. The cause had begun twenty to twenty-four months ago.
He wrote this in his notebook. He wrote: compare to year-one Qi density observation.
He had noted the sections elevated ambient Qi density in his third week in the compound. He pulled his year-one notebook from his pack and found the entry. Third week. Northeastern corner of the outer boundary. Qi density reading approximately eight percent above the surrounding sections inconsistent with documented spirit vein distribution.
That observation was three years old. The cause it pointed to had been for at least three years. Longer almost certainly since Qi density anomalies of that consistency did not appear overnight.
Something had been in the boundary section for years. Something that was producing a Qi density anomaly. Something that had recently changed in intensity or character. Twenty to twenty-four months ago. Enough to push the beast population from background tolerance to permanent avoidance.
He wrote: the Qi density anomaly and the beast avoidance pattern're connected. Same location. Different timelines. The anomaly is old. The behavioral shift is recent. Something about the anomaly changed.
He went back to the section alone at the end of the second review day after Callum had submitted his documentation and gone to the communal hall for dinner.
There was still an hour of light.
He stood at the edge and ran the Soul Path stream at maximum resolution. Rather than ambient. The difference between ambient reading and directed reading was like the difference between hearing a room and listening to a specific sound in a room. The same input, processed completely differently.
The surface was quiet as before. No beast activity. The flatness of unused territory.
He pushed the reading downward.
Through the root layer of the forest. Through the soil. Into the structure beneath. His Soul Path reach at this cultivation stage had a practical limit of approximately eight to ten meters in directed mode. Enough to feel the shape of what was below the surface but not enough to characterize it in detail.
At twelve meters. Below his clear resolution limit in the range where he could detect presence without being able to describe it. There was something.
Structured Qi. Not ambient. Not the natural accumulation of a spirit vein or the residual signature of beast activity. Structured in the specific way that only deliberate construction produced. Something had been made down there.
Old. Very old. The quality of something that had been present for so long that the environment had partially absorbed it. Not naturalized it you could still feel that it was artificial but the boundary between the thing and the earth around it had blurred with time. A decade at minimum. More likely several decades. Possibly longer.
He stood with this reading for minutes.
He could not characterize it further at twelve meters depth with his Soul Path resolution. He could say with confidence: structured Qi, artificial construction, old, underground, approximately twelve meters. He could not say what it was what it contained what had changed twenty months ago or why the beasts were avoiding it.
He came back to the surface layer. He breathed. He walked back, to the compound.
He wrote the entry that evening in his notebook.
Mystery file. Boundary Section. Observations accumulated across three years:
Year one week three was when I first noticed something. The Qi density in the part of our boundary was about 8% higher than the surrounding areas. This did not make sense to me because it did not match the usual spirit vein distribution. I could not find any explanation for this. I filed it away.
When I did my summer review this year I found another thing. There was a gap in the beast distribution about 30 meters wide in the same section where I noticed the Qi density anomaly. It had been fourteen months since we last saw any beasts in that area. The way the population was avoiding that spot was similar to how they react to long-term Qi anomalies. Something had changed about twenty to twenty-four months ago. That is why the beasts were avoiding it now.
After my review I did some solo observation. Found something even more interesting. Twelve meters underground I detected a structured Qi presence. It was clear that this was something man-made and it was very old. At decades old. Unfortunately my current Soul Path resolution is not good enough to see it so I could not learn more about it.
I think all these things are connected. The underground structure is probably the cause of the Qi density anomaly. Something changed twenty to twenty-four months ago and that change was big enough to make the beasts avoid the area.
I read over my notes again. I have five things that I do not understand in our sect compound. There is the formation stone, the enrollment record, the strange boundary section, the question that Wei Shan never asked and now this underground structure. It is old. Something about it changed recently but I do not have the ability to investigate it properly now.
To do it right I would need a Soul Path resolution to see it clearly a higher overall cultivation level to approach it safely and a good reason to spend time in that area without drawing attention to myself. None of these things are possible for me now but they will be if my Foundation preparation goes as planned.
Shen Yue came to visit me that evening. She had some updates on the network, including Kairos Core Formation ceremony and Elder Rho Callens new mentorship. She gave me the information in her efficient way and I listened carefully.
When she finished she did not leave. She sat in the corner. I could tell that something was on her mind. I have worked with her for three years. I know when she is thinking about something that is not just business.
"You found something in your review " she said finally. It was not a question.
"Yes " I replied. I told her about the beast distribution gap the sighting log data and the underground Qi reading. I explained how I thought all these things were connected and how they happened around the time.
She listened carefully. Was quiet for a moment after I finished. "Twenty months ago " she said.
"Approximately " I replied.
"You were in your year here " she said. "You were still at the Circulation tier."
"Yes " I said.
"Nothing changed in the compound itself that I know of twenty months ago " she said, thinking through her network data. "No construction, no formations, no significant visitors."
"The change came from the structure " I said. "Not from the compound itself."
"Something internal to whatever's down there " she said.
"Yes " I agreed.
She looked towards the boundary as if she could see through the wall and into the distance. "What do you think it is?" she asked.
I thought about it seriously. I had been thinking about it since my solo observation. "It is old " I said. "It was built on purpose. It is below the spirit vein level. That means it was put there to be hidden in the Qi. Whatever changed twenty months ago was something inside it like a process that reached a stage or a condition that was met."
"Or something wearing out " she said.
"Like a preservation array degrading " I said. "If whatever is there was sealed and preserved and the sealing array is getting weaker that could explain the change in the Qi signature above it. That could also explain why the beasts started avoiding the area."
Shen Yue thought about this for a moment. "I will keep an eye on that section through my network " she said. "If anything is visible from the boundary I will know it."
"Thank you " I said.
She stood up. Paused at the edge of the room as if she wanted to make sure I understood something. "Foundation " she said, reminding me of my priority.
"Foundation " I agreed.
She. I sat in the corner for a while thinking. The formation stones were still. The eleventh stone was still a little different. Whatever was twelve meters below the boundary of Greenwood Forest was still doing its thing and it would keep doing it until I was ready to go look at it.
I am patient. I have been patient for three years. I can be patient for long as it takes to build my Foundation.
I opened my notebook to the Foundation preparation section. Went back, to work.
