A Week in the Shadows (Part 2)

Arc 2 – The Shadow Conspiracy

---

Arin's Uneasy Night

The torches burned low as the night stretched deeper.

Most of the Holy Guards had settled into shifts. Some patrolled the perimeter of the ruined forest while others remained near the crater, continuing their investigation.

The battlefield still smelled faintly of burned earth and monster blood.

Arin sat alone on the flat stone where he had been resting earlier.

He hadn't moved much.

The exhaustion from running to the capital and back was still heavy in his legs, but sleep refused to come.

Too many thoughts crowded his mind.

The guards nearby spoke quietly among themselves. Occasionally one of them glanced toward Arin.

Not suspicious.

Not hostile.

But watchful.

They treated him like someone important.

That bothered him more than if they had treated him like a criminal.

Arin lowered his gaze to the ground.

The dirt beneath his boots was still dark with dried blood.

He remembered the battle again.

The monster roaring as it burst from the forest.

The Hollow Sigil elders surrounding them.

And then…

Kashihero stepping forward.

Calm.

Silent.

Unshaken.

Arin clenched his fists.

Even now the memory filled him with a strange mixture of emotions.

Fear.

Awe.

Respect.

And something else.

A burning desire.

He wanted to be strong like that.

Not just strong enough to survive.

Strong enough to protect people.

Strong enough to stand in front of monsters without fear.

Arin let out a quiet breath.

But right now he wasn't strong.

Right now he was just a boy surrounded by soldiers who believed he might lead them to his teachers.

One of the guards approached slowly.

"You should try to sleep."

Arin looked up.

The guard didn't seem unfriendly.

Just tired.

"I can't," Arin replied quietly.

The guard sat down on a nearby rock.

"First time seeing a battlefield like this?"

Arin nodded slightly.

The guard sighed.

"Yeah."

"That's normal."

He looked around at the broken trees and shattered earth.

"I've been doing this for fifteen years."

"And it still feels strange sometimes."

Arin didn't know what to say.

After a moment the guard stood again.

"Get some rest if you can."

"We'll be here until morning."

Arin watched him walk away.

But the guard's words didn't calm his thoughts.

If anything…

They made them louder.

Captain Darius' Thoughts

Captain Darius Valen stood at the edge of the crater once more.

The moon had shifted higher in the sky.

Its pale light stretched across the battlefield.

Most of the investigators had finished their immediate work.

But Darius remained.

His mind was turning over the same questions again and again.

Two unknown individuals.

One young swordsman.

One red-eyed fighter.

Both powerful enough to kill Hollow Sigil elders.

Both powerful enough to defeat a creature infused with underworld energy.

That kind of strength did not appear randomly.

Darius looked down at the deep slash carved into the earth.

The wound that had killed the monster.

It was clean.

Precise.

Almost elegant.

Whoever had struck that blow understood combat at a very high level.

Darius slowly exhaled.

He had encountered many powerful warriors during his career.

But this situation felt different.

Because the boy had said something interesting.

"They weren't afraid."

Darius turned his head slightly and looked toward Arin.

The boy sat quietly under the torchlight.

Exhausted.

But determined.

Darius had questioned him several times already.

The story never changed.

Kashihero and Lucas were his teachers.

They had saved him.

They had fought the monster.

Then they had left.

No lies.

No hesitation.

Just honesty.

Which made things even more complicated.

Because if the boy was telling the truth…

Then those two individuals were not enemies.

But that did not mean they were harmless.

Power like that always attracted attention.

Especially from organizations like the Holy Guards.

Darius folded his arms slowly.

"We'll watch the boy," he murmured to himself.

"Eventually they'll come for him."

---

The Forest Camp

Miles away from the battlefield, the small campfire burned softly in the forest clearing.

Lucas stared into the flames.

Kashihero stood nearby, his katana sheathed once again.

The night had grown colder.

But neither of them seemed bothered by it.

Lucas finally broke the silence.

"You felt that too, didn't you?"

Kashihero didn't answer immediately.

But Lucas could already see the faint change in his expression.

Subtle.

Barely noticeable.

Yet unmistakable.

"Yes," Kashihero replied.

Lucas leaned back on his hands.

"Well…"

"That's not good."

The air had shifted earlier.

Just slightly.

But Lucas recognized the feeling instantly.

Underworld energy.

Not the lingering trace left behind by the monster.

Something deeper.

Something older.

Lucas stared up at the dark sky.

"That seal is getting weaker."

Kashihero's gaze turned toward the distant horizon.

Demon King Xarge.

The mission given by the system had not been random.

The signs were already appearing.

Lucas chuckled quietly.

"You know…"

"This is starting to feel like trouble."

Kashihero didn't disagree.

But his voice remained calm.

"We expected this."

Lucas nodded slowly.

"True."

The wind moved through the clearing again.

For a brief moment the fire flickered violently.

Lucas narrowed his eyes.

"Still…"

"If that thing wakes up too early…"

He didn't finish the sentence.

He didn't need to.

Both of them understood exactly what that meant.

---

The Boy Who Waited

Back at the battlefield, the night slowly approached its end.

The eastern horizon had begun to lighten slightly.

Morning was coming.

Arin was still awake.

His eyes burned from exhaustion, but sleep had never arrived.

Every time he closed his eyes he saw the same images.

The monster.

The battle.

His teachers disappearing into the forest.

Arin looked toward the dark tree line.

Somewhere beyond those trees…

Kashihero and Lucas were watching.

He didn't know how he knew that.

But he felt it.

They wouldn't abandon him.

Not after everything.

A quiet determination settled in his chest.

He just needed to wait.

---

Deep Beneath the Earth

Far below the human world, the ritual circle had begun to glow.

Crimson symbols burned across the altar.

The cloaked members of the Hollow Sigil knelt around the chamber.

Dark energy flowed slowly through the air.

At the center of the altar, a fragment of black crystal pulsed faintly.

The presence within the chamber stirred again.

"…Soon."

The voice echoed like distant thunder.

The followers trembled.

"The seal weakens."

One of them dared to speak.

"What about the Devourer?"

The darkness seemed to shift.

A slow, cold amusement filled the air.

"Let him grow."

The voice continued.

"Predators sharpen themselves through struggle."

"And when the time comes…"

"…even a predator can become prey."

The chamber fell silent again.

But far beyond the underground temple…

In the deepest layers of the Abyss…

Ancient chains trembled.

A massive silhouette stirred in the darkness.

And the name whispered through the void like a curse.

Xarge.

---

Dawn

The first light of morning finally touched the forest.

The battlefield looked even more devastating in the daylight.

Broken trees.

Burned earth.

The enormous corpse of the monster.

Captain Darius stood quietly as the sun rose over the horizon.

One of the officers approached him.

"Captain."

"Yes?"

"What should we do with the boy?"

Darius looked toward Arin.

The boy had finally fallen asleep against the rock he had been sitting on.

Despite everything…

He looked peaceful.

Darius's gaze hardened slightly.

"Bring him back to the capital."

The officer nodded.

"And his teachers?"

Darius looked toward the forest beyond the battlefield.

"They'll come."

His voice carried quiet certainty.

"People always return for the ones they care about."

The wind moved through the ruined clearing once more.

Somewhere deep within the forest…

Two silent observers watched the rising sun.

And the week of waiting had only just begun.
