The Shadow That Watches

Arc 2 – The Shadow Conspiracy

---

The forest slowly returned to life.

After Veythar disappeared, the suffocating pressure that had covered the clearing began to fade.

The wind returned first.

A gentle breeze moved through the tall trees, rustling leaves that had been frozen in stillness moments earlier.

Then the insects began chirping again.

Nature was slowly reclaiming the silence.

But Lucas remained completely still.

His crimson eyes were still focused on the place where the Demon General had vanished.

"…Well," he finally muttered.

"That was unpleasant."

Kashihero stood quietly a few meters away, his katana now resting inside its sheath.

His expression was calm.

But his mind was moving rapidly.

Lucas scratched the back of his head.

"You're thinking about what he said, aren't you?"

Kashihero nodded slightly.

"Yes."

Lucas exhaled.

"That guy knew too much."

The red-eyed fighter stepped forward and kicked a small stone across the clearing.

"Demons don't usually come all the way to the human world just to 'observe' someone."

His voice carried a hint of irritation.

"That means something bigger is happening."

Kashihero didn't respond immediately.

He looked toward the distant mountains beyond the forest.

The place where the demon had appeared.

Lucas crossed his arms.

"Also…"

He paused briefly.

"…he came alone."

Kashihero's eyes shifted slightly.

"Yes."

Lucas frowned.

"And that's the part I don't like."

If a Demon General had truly come alone, that meant two possibilities.

Either Veythar was extremely confident…

Or he wasn't the only one watching.

Lucas scanned the surrounding forest again.

Tall trees stretched endlessly into darkness.

But something about the night air still felt wrong.

He clicked his tongue.

"We should assume the worst."

Kashihero nodded.

"They are already moving."

Lucas sighed.

"Great."

He stretched his arms lazily.

"So now the Abyss knows about us."

Kashihero looked down at the ground for a moment.

Then he spoke quietly.

"That was inevitable."

Lucas chuckled softly.

"True."

Training in the Forest

The next morning arrived with a cold gray sky.

Clouds drifted slowly across the horizon as faint sunlight filtered through the forest canopy.

Lucas woke up first.

He stretched lazily while staring at the small campfire that had burned through the night.

Then he noticed something.

Kashihero was already awake.

Standing in the clearing again.

Training.

Lucas groaned.

"You seriously started again?"

Kashihero didn't stop.

His katana cut through the air in precise arcs.

Each movement carried controlled power.

Lucas rubbed his face.

"You fought a Demon General last night."

"You should rest."

Kashihero finally stopped moving.

"The battle was incomplete."

Lucas raised an eyebrow.

"Incomplete?"

Kashihero turned toward him.

"Yes."

Lucas sighed.

"You're impossible."

But despite his complaint, Lucas could see something important.

Kashihero had improved.

Even since yesterday.

His movements were faster.

Sharper.

More controlled.

Lucas scratched his chin thoughtfully.

"That demon really pushed you, huh?"

Kashihero didn't deny it.

The encounter with Veythar had revealed something important.

There were enemies in this world far stronger than the ones they had faced so far.

And if the Abyss had truly begun moving…

Then their time was limited.

Lucas leaned against a tree again.

"You planning to hunt monsters today?"

Kashihero nodded.

"Yes."

Lucas smirked.

"Good."

"Because I'm bored."

---

The Capital

Meanwhile, life in the capital continued as usual.

Merchants shouted in the markets.

Blacksmiths hammered steel in their workshops.

Adventurers moved through the city streets, discussing quests and rumors.

But inside the headquarters of the Holy Guard…

The atmosphere was tense.

Captain Darius Valen stood inside a large meeting room.

Several high-ranking officers surrounded the table.

Documents and reports were scattered across the surface.

One of the officers spoke.

"The monster from the forest was definitely connected to Hollow Sigil."

Another officer nodded.

"We also confirmed that two elders from the organization were killed during the battle."

Darius folded his arms.

"And the two unidentified individuals?"

The room fell silent.

No one had an answer.

One officer finally spoke carefully.

"We have only the boy's testimony."

Darius glanced toward the window.

"Arin."

The boy had become a key part of their investigation.

Not because he was dangerous.

But because he had witnessed everything.

Darius exhaled slowly.

"Keep watching him."

The officers nodded.

They all understood the implication.

If the mysterious warriors truly cared about the boy…

Then eventually they would come.

---

Arin's Resolve

Arin sat in the small room inside the headquarters.

He stared at the training sword resting on the table.

It had been given to him earlier that morning.

One of the guards had left it without explanation.

Arin picked it up slowly.

The wooden weapon felt light in his hands.

Too light.

He remembered the way Kashihero held his katana.

The calm confidence.

The controlled strength.

Arin clenched the training sword tightly.

"I won't stay weak."

He stepped into the center of the room.

Then he began swinging the blade.

His movements were rough.

Unpolished.

But determined.

Again.

And again.

And again.

Each swing carried the same thought.

I need to become stronger.

Beneath the City

Far below the capital…

Inside the hidden ruins of Hollow Sigil…

The ritual chamber was filled with dark energy.

Cloaked figures surrounded the black altar once more.

Crimson symbols glowed across the stone floor.

And standing at the center of the chamber…

Was Veythar.

The Demon General had returned.

One of the followers stepped forward nervously.

"My lord."

"Did you find him?"

Veythar's crimson eyes glowed faintly.

"Yes."

The follower hesitated.

"And?"

Veythar's lips curved slightly.

"He is not ready yet."

Dark energy flickered around his body.

"But he will become interesting."

The chamber fell silent again.

Veythar slowly raised his hand.

Shadows twisted around his fingers.

"The Devourer believes he is growing stronger."

His voice echoed through the ruins.

"But strength alone will not save him."

The demon's gaze lifted toward the ceiling.

Toward the city above.

Because something far greater was already moving.

Something ancient.

Something terrible.

And even the Demon General seemed cautious about it.

Veythar spoke quietly.

"Prepare the next phase."

The followers lowered their heads.

Because the real plan of the Abyss had not yet begun.

Back in the Forest

Lucas sat beside the campfire that evening, chewing on a roasted piece of meat.

Kashihero stood nearby, staring toward the distant horizon again.

Lucas glanced at him.

"You've been doing that all day."

Kashihero didn't respond.

Lucas sighed.

"You're worried about something."

Finally, Kashihero spoke.

"Yes."

Lucas raised an eyebrow.

"That demon again?"

Kashihero shook his head slightly.

"No."

Lucas frowned.

"Then what?"

Kashihero's eyes narrowed slightly as he looked toward the dark forest beyond their camp.

"The forest has been too quiet."

Lucas blinked.

"What do you mean?"

Kashihero turned slightly.

"There are no monsters nearby."

Lucas paused.

Then slowly…

His expression changed.

"…Wait."

"You're right."

For the past several hours, they hadn't encountered a single creature.

Not one.

Lucas stood up slowly.

"That's not normal."

The forest around them was known for monster activity.

The sudden absence of them meant only one thing.

Something had scared them away.

Or something…

Had already hunted them.

Lucas looked toward the dark trees surrounding their clearing.

His voice lowered slightly.

"Kashihero…"

"What if that demon wasn't the only one here last night?"

The wind moved through the forest again.

But this time…

The sound carried something else.

A faint noise.

Somewhere deep in the darkness between the trees.

A single branch snapped.

Lucas's crimson eyes sharpened instantly.

And the terrifying question slowly formed in his mind.

If Veythar had only come to observe them…

then what exactly had been hunting in the forest while they were asleep?
