Chapter 19 - CHAPTER EIGHTEEN: THE BETRAYAL CODE

Silence.

Not the kind from before.

This one was sharper.

Heavier.

Final.

Tobi didn't move.

Chinedu stood behind him, breath steady, eyes locked on the phone still glowing faintly in Tobi's hand.

"Who are you texting?"

The question lingered like a blade against skin.

Slowly…

Tobi turned.

No panic.

No fear.

Just something worse—

Acceptance.

"You already know," he said quietly.

Chinedu stepped closer.

"Then say it."

A pause.

Tobi exhaled.

Then—he lifted the phone.

"Relax," he muttered. "It's not what you think."

Chinedu's voice dropped, deadly calm.

"Then send it."

For a second…

Tobi hesitated.

His thumb hovered.

Shaking.

A war happening inside him.

Then—

Tap.

Message sent.

Too late.

Chinedu moved instantly—snatched the phone from his hand.

His eyes scanned the screen.

And froze.

"He's starting to suspect. We move tonight."

Something inside him snapped—quietly.

Not rage.

Not yet.

Something colder.

"You sold us out," Chinedu said.

Tobi laughed.

But it wasn't humor.

It was pain.

"You think this is about you?" he snapped suddenly, voice rising. "You think everything is about you?"

Chinedu's jaw tightened.

"You had a choice."

"No!" Tobi fired back. "You had a choice! You were already picked, Chinedu! From day one! Coach, scouts—everyone saw you! The rest of us?"

He pointed to himself.

"We were just bodies. Extras. Background noise in your big dream!"

The words hit hard.

Too hard.

But Chinedu didn't flinch.

"So you betrayed us?"

Tobi's expression shifted.

Cracked.

"You don't understand," he said, quieter now. "This wasn't just football."

A beat.

"They found me."

Chinedu's eyes narrowed.

"Who?"

Tobi stepped closer.

Low voice.

Dangerous truth.

"The people behind Fernandez."

Silence.

And then—

The world got bigger.

"They don't just scout players," Tobi continued. "They control outcomes. Matches. Trials. Careers."

He swallowed.

"And if you don't play along… they end you."

Chinedu stared at him.

Measuring.

"You're lying."

Tobi shook his head slowly.

"They already paid officials," he said. "The trial? It's fixed."

That hit deeper than anything else.

Everything Chinedu had fought for—

Rigged.

A vibration cut through the tension.

Coach Adeyemi's phone.

He answered.

Listened.

His face changed.

"Who?" he demanded.

Then silence.

He lowered the phone slowly.

"What is it?" Chinedu asked.

Coach looked at him.

Grim.

"They're making their final move tonight."

Another vibration.

This time—

Chinedu's phone.

A message.

Unknown number.

His chest tightened as he opened it.

A video loaded.

Grainy.

Dark.

Then—

His breath stopped.

"…No."

It was his mother.

Tied to a chair.

Her face streaked with tears.

"Mama…" his voice broke.

A shadow moved behind her.

A man's voice.

Distorted.

Cold.

"If you want her alive…

You'll lose the trial."

The video ended.

Silence crashed into the room.

Heavy.

Unforgiving.

Chinedu's hand trembled—but only for a second.

Then it stilled.

His face hardened.

Something inside him shifting again.

Evolving.

Tobi watched him.

"You see now?" he whispered. "This isn't a game anymore."

Footsteps thundered in.

Security.

They grabbed Tobi.

He didn't resist.

Didn't fight.

As they dragged him away—

He locked eyes with Chinedu.

One last time.

And said softly:

"You still don't get it…"

A pause.

Then—

"You've already lost."

The door slammed.

Gone.

Silence again.

But not empty.

Not this time.

This silence carried a storm.

Chinedu stood there, phone still in his hand.

Screen dark.

Future uncertain.

Then slowly—

He lifted his head.

Eyes burning.

Not with fear.

Not with doubt.

But something far more dangerous—

Decision.

"They want me to lose?" he said quietly.

Coach Adeyemi watched him carefully.

Chinedu's lips curved slightly.

Not a smile.

Something else.

"Then we change the game."

FINAL MOMENT (DISPENSE 🔥)

Across the city…

Inside a dark room lit only by screens—

The masked men watched the video feed.

One of them leaned forward.

"Is he breaking?"

Another shook his head slowly.

On the screen—

Chinedu's face appeared.

Calm.

Focused.

Unshaken.

The first man smiled.

"Good."

A pause.

Then—

"That makes it more interesting."

He reached for his phone.

And dialed.
