Chapter 79 - Chapter 3: Questions in the Sunset

The hill overlooking the ocean had become the strangest meeting place imaginable.

The sunset burned across the horizon in deep orange and violet, the waves below rolling gently against the sand.

And standing on that quiet hill…

…were heroes and villains together.

On one side of the portal stood Class 1-A, with Bakugo already cracking his knuckles and glaring across the grass. Aizawa stood slightly in front of them, his tired eyes locked on the villains.

On the other side stood the League of Villains. Shigaraki's fingers twitched near his neck while Dabi leaned lazily against a rock, watching everything with quiet amusement.

And in the center of it all…

Ren and Mina sat in the grass.

Ren rubbed the back of his neck nervously.

"…This is definitely my fault."

Mina whispered, "Definitely."

For several tense seconds, nobody moved.

Everyone seemed to be waiting for someone else to make the first move.

Then, surprisingly…

Kurogiri stepped forward.

The tall mist-like villain calmly observed the entire scene.

His glowing yellow eyes moved slowly from the heroes… to the villains… to the two students sitting on the hill.

"…Fascinating."

Unlike the others, he did not seem angry or aggressive.

Instead, he seemed… curious.

Kurogiri turned slightly toward the swirling portal behind him.

A moment later, a dark mist portal opened beside him, leading back to the League's base.

Everyone tensed.

Bakugo barked, "Oi—what's he doing now?!"

But instead of pulling out weapons or reinforcements…

Kurogiri simply reached through the portal.

When he withdrew his hand, he was holding three pillows.

Dabi blinked.

"…Did you just grab couch pillows?"

Shigaraki slowly turned toward him.

"…Why."

Kurogiri said nothing.

He walked calmly across the grass toward Ren and Mina.

Every hero on the hill immediately tensed.

Aizawa's scarf began to rise slightly.

Bakugo's hands sparked.

But Kurogiri stopped a few feet away.

Then…

He gently placed one pillow on the grass in front of Mina.

Another beside Ren.

And finally placed the third pillow down and sat on it himself, elegantly folding his hands.

The mist around his collar swirled quietly in the sunset light.

Everyone stared.

Even Shigaraki looked confused.

"…Kurogiri?"

Kurogiri simply tilted his head slightly.

"I believe," he said calmly, "that someone should first read the room."

He gestured toward the ocean.

"This is neither a battlefield nor a tactical environment."

The waves rolled quietly below.

The sun dipped lower toward the horizon.

"…It is," Kurogiri continued, "a peaceful hill during sunset."

Dabi chuckled.

"I hate that you're making sense."

Bakugo groaned loudly.

"WHY ARE WE HAVING A PICNIC WITH VILLAINS?!"

Mina whispered to Ren, "I kinda like him."

Ren nodded slowly.

"…He brought pillows."

Kurogiri then turned his glowing gaze toward Ren.

Up close, the mist surrounding his face seemed to move like a calm storm.

"You," Kurogiri said politely.

Ren pointed at himself.

"Me?"

"Yes."

Ren straightened slightly.

"…Uh… hi."

Kurogiri inclined his head.

"Greetings."

There was a brief pause as he studied Ren carefully.

"Your ability is… extremely intriguing."

Ren blinked.

"You mean my portal?"

"Indeed."

Kurogiri gestured lightly toward the two swirling portals behind them — one leading to U.A. High School, the other to the League of Villains base.

"Spatial manipulation of this precision is rare."

Ren scratched his cheek.

"Well… it usually isn't this precise."

Kurogiri leaned forward slightly.

"That is exactly what interests me."

Behind them, the heroes and villains remained in a cautious standoff, but even they seemed curious about the conversation now.

Kurogiri continued calmly.

"Tell me… young man."

"Is your ability strictly teleportation?"

Ren thought for a moment.

"…Not exactly."

Kurogiri's mist swirled slightly, signaling interest.

"Please elaborate."

Ren held up his hand.

Purple energy flickered faintly around his fingers.

"I can create portals between two points," he explained. "Usually places I've seen before."

Kurogiri nodded slowly.

"Ah. A spatial anchor requirement."

"Yeah."

Ren pointed toward the portal showing U.A.

"That one I've done before."

Then he pointed toward the League portal.

"That one… I think happened because I've seen it through someone else's portal."

Kurogiri tilted his head.

"…Through mine."

Ren nodded.

"Yeah."

Dabi whistled quietly from behind them.

"So he copied your GPS."

Kurogiri ignored the comment.

"Then allow me to ask something more important."

His glowing eyes focused on Ren.

"Earlier today you transported multiple individuals simultaneously."

Ren nodded slowly.

"I did."

"And yet," Kurogiri continued, "your portals previously displayed instability."

"Yeah…"

"However," Kurogiri said, gesturing toward the perfectly smooth portal rings, "these are flawless."

Ren looked back at them.

They hummed softly, stable and perfectly round.

"…I don't know why," he admitted.

Mina leaned forward.

"It just happened!"

Kurogiri rested his hands calmly on his knees.

"Most abilities evolve under moments of emotional clarity."

Ren blinked.

"…Emotional clarity?"

Kurogiri gestured toward the sunset.

"You were calm."

Ren glanced at the ocean again.

The colors reflected across the water like glowing glass.

"…Yeah."

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Kurogiri asked the question that made both heroes and villains lean closer.

"Tell me one final thing."

Ren looked back at him.

"…Okay."

Kurogiri's mist curled slightly as he spoke.

"Is teleportation your only Quirk?"

The hill fell silent.

Mina slowly turned toward Ren.

"…Wait."

Even Aizawa's eyes narrowed.

Ren blinked.

"…I think so?"

Kurogiri studied him for several seconds.

Then he leaned back slightly.

"…Interesting."

Shigaraki groaned.

"Kurogiri why are you interviewing the hero kid."

Dabi added with a smirk,

"Yeah, are we recruiting him or something?"

Kurogiri calmly responded,

"I am simply… gathering information."

Then he looked back at Ren.

"And I suspect," he said quietly,

"your ability is far more complex than even you realize."

Ren stared at his glowing hand.

The portals behind him pulsed softly.

For the first time…

He wondered if Kurogiri might be right.

Beside him, Mina whispered excitedly,

"Ren… what if you unlock like… super portals?"

Ren sighed.

"…I'm already scared of that idea."

Behind them, Bakugo shouted,

"CAN WE GO BACK TO FIGHTING NOW?!"

Dabi shrugged.

"Honestly I'm invested in the interview."

And on a quiet hill above the ocean…

A hero student and a villain made of mist continued discussing the science of teleportation while the rest of the battlefield awkwardly waited.

The sunset slowly faded into night.
